Mr Tumnus was rescued in West Sussex around 5 weeks ago, he had a nasty open wound of unknown origin, possibly a bite from another seal. Initially looked after by AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic in Bognor Regis, and then moved on to @rspca_mallydams_wood for ongoing treatment. Whilst on another tasking this morning we were flagged down by a member of public to a seal pup they had found wedged in the rocks. Once freed from the rocks the seal was pup-sat by us then taken by British Divers Marine Life Rescue down to RSPCA - Mallydams Wood to be checked over and recuperate as it is rather underweight and has a few grazes. Com os incêndios de proporções épicas como estes dos últimos dias, o que será dos peixes após as cinzas serem carreadas para os rios, com as primeiras chuvas? Esta é uma preocupação que tem afetado o sono de nossos pesquisadores. Ainda não se sabe ao certo os efeitos sobre a biodiversidade pantaneira. O Pantanal é regido pelo ciclo das águas, períodos de cheia e seca giram os motores da vida na região, e o que afeta a vida nos rios afeta a vida em terra firme também. Toda a biodiversidade da região vai sofrer consequências – inclusive os pantaneiros. É por isso que a Ação Bicho vivo não vai parar após o fim dos incêndios. Já são mais de 3,6 toneladas de alimentos distribuídos com a doação de mais de 380 pessoas até o momento. Airü, una nutria bebé, encontrada abandonada y herida, en Leticia, Amazonas, llegó en regulares condiciones de salud al @zoologicodecali, pues en este lugar tienen mucha experiencia con esta especie, por lo que su evolución ha sido un éxito. Esta nutria gigante de río cuenta 24/7 con Natalia Ipiales, su mamá sustituta, quien la alimenta 5 veces al día con 1,3 kg de pescado (cachama y tilapia), juegan, la asea y realiza ejercicios para que se vaya adaptando a su nuevo hábitat, pues al no estar con sus padres, no aprenderá a hacer sonidos y tampoco identificará los riesgos y oportunidades en vida silvestre. We are happy to report that grey seal Pippi Longstocking is healing well from the surgeries she underwent last month! While removing her sutures during a sedated procedure last week, our Animal Rescue team measured and weighed Pippi, who has been in our care since she was around 1 month old. They found that she has gained 22kg and grown 21cm since being admitted to the Animal Care and Rescue Center in February! Staff and volunteers have begun reintroducing soft tactile enrichment items to Pippi as her status improves—buoys, dog toys and light shower spray are among her favorites. She also enjoys snacking on ice, which keeps her hydrated and helps to process her cocktail of prescribed medications. She is currently receiving an anti-inflammatory medication and two types of antibiotics; we are planning to phase her off of them in the coming weeks. - @nationalaquarium on Instagram

T H E I S S U ES: Threats to Asian otter population are loss of wetland habitats due to construction of hydroelectric projects, conversion of wetlands for developments and agriculture, reduction in fish availability, poaching and contamination of waterways by pesticides. The pet trade is a newer threat to these adorable otters, and social media has driven the demand. Researchers believe they are being stolen from the wild in Indonesia, Thailand, and other countries in Southeast Asia to sell them as pets locally and in Japan. SOLUTIONS: The Singapore River clean-up was first established in 1987 with a goal to raise awareness of the negative effects of dumping waste into Singapores waterways. The programme continues today, to keep encouraging people to keep the waterways clean. Previously administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Current education programmes aimed at keeping the countrys waterways clean are managed by the Waterways Watch Society (WWS), a local non-profit, non-governmental organization. To protect animals from the pet trade, most Southeast Asian countries have enacted laws banning their capture, sale, possession, and transport. Concealed away in the reeds, I was hoping a family of ducks would swim by. Mom or her 7 ducklings were no where to be found as dawn was fading. Todays #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek spotlight is Chloe! Nicknamed The Laid Back One, Chloe is an independent otter who likes to do her own thing. At seven years old, her dark fur is starting to turn gray. Her favorite thing to do is groom herself on a pile of ice underneath the skylight inside her habitat. Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal on the planet. In just one square inch, a sea otter has 800,000 to one million hairs, more than enough to cover an entire adult dog or cat. This lush coat makes grooming a vital and an almost constant activity. The animals are very limber and their skeletons are loosely jointed, meaning they can easily reach and groom every single part of their bodies. ¿Sabés que es la lista roja de la UICN? Es un inventario mundial elaborado por científicos convocados por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, donde se establece el estado de conservación de las distintas especies del planeta y cuales están en peligro o no de extinción. En el 2019, la UICN pudo evaluar 105.732 especies, 12.155 más que el año pasado, y el resultado fue que 28.338 especies están amenazadas. 873 ya están extintas, 73 también lo están en su estado salvaje y solo sobreviven en cautiverio. Por otro lado, 6127 especies están en peligro crítico, 9.754 en peligro, 12.457 en estado vulnerable y 6.435 como casi amenazadas. Entre estas especies en Argentina se encuentran: el Huillín, en grave peligro de extinción, el Cóndor Andino, la Ballena Franca Austral, con sólo 10 mil ejemplares aproximadamente en los océanos. El guanaco, que ha pérdido el 58% de sus poblaciones en la última década. El Pingüino de Magallanes y el Zorro Colorado Patagónico, que aunque todavía no están cerca de extinguirse de seguir reduciendo sus hábitats podrían estarlo. Todos ellos son importantes habitantes de Península Mitre. La naturaleza está disminuyendo a un ritmo sin precedentes en la historia humana, pero aún así pareciera que los estados todavía no reconocen la urgencia para tratar esta crisis, y menos aún son conscientes del trabajo en conjunto que deberían estar haciendo. Sólo el humano reconoce límites en la naturaleza. Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

Lootas, a 23 year old female, affectionately known as grandma, was orphaned in Alaska and came to us after rehabilitation. She is the mother to Aniak, who just celebrated her 18th birthday and was born here at the Aquarium. Adaa, our one male, is 21 years old and was found on an airport runway. And Mishka, our youngest otter at age 6, who was rescued after being caught in a fishing net as a pup. My first otter I have ever seen, taken the other morning! What an experience it was, this otter was completely unfazed by everyone watching him and seemed to enjoy all the attention, he came so close at one point it was almost too close to focus! There was actually 2 or maybe 3 other otters all in this same loch! It was amazing to see these otters here in Edinburgh, considering they are normally so elusive! It was also really nice to see so many people stopping and enjoying watching them, it definitely shows how much we need nature and it would be very cool if this became more common all over the UK! . . This Atlantic Grey Seal female & pup, hidden in a secluded cove on the Cornish Coast. . I spent an amazing time with these two, watching the young pup sucking on her mother’s rich milk, on average the pup puts on up-to 2Kgs a day (4.4Ibs) . At this time of year it’s vitally important to stay at least 100m away where possible, as they are prone to disturbance and the mother may abandon her young, or it could prevent vital feeding to take place. (Keep Dogs under strict control) . These images were taken at considerable distance in cover with a long lens as not to disturb them from their natural behaviour. . The grey seal is the larger of the two UK seal species, and if you catch a good look at them you’ll see how they got their scientific name Halichoerus grypus – it means hook-nosed sea pig! These mammals spend most of their time out at sea feeding on fish. They return to land to rest and can often be seen ‘hauled out’, lying on British beaches. Grey seals give birth to fluffy white pups in the autumn. These adorable pups stay on land until they have lost their white coats and trebled their body weight. . Insta-famous otters are fueling an otter craze in Japan. Both Asian small-clawed and smooth-coated otters have experienced dramatic declines in recent years, likely due to the demand for otters as pets in the country. A snowball effect of the increasing popularity of “otter cafes” and viral otter videos on social media continues to further fuel the obsession with pet otters. But some good news might be on the horizon for smooth-coated otters. Today they were uplisted to Appendix I – the strictest of protection under CITES (pending confirmation at the end of this week). This will effectively end all international trade and hopefully give them a chance to recover. We’re still waiting on news for the Asian small-clawed otter. Indonesia, opposing this listing, has opted to meet with the Parties who proposed the listing (India, Nepal, and the Philippines) and will resume discussions tomorrow. Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! What do river otters do when ponds and creeks dry up in a drought? 💧 River otters need fresh water for drinking, grooming their thick fur, and supplying prey like fish, crayfish, insects, birds, and herps. Unlike sea otters, river otters are agile on land, can climb trees, and move 25 miles or more between watersheds. When creeks and ponds dry up otters move on to better habitats, explains Megan Isadore, co-founder and executive director of @riverotterecology (ROEP). . However, moving between watersheds can be dangerous for river otters. Thats where community science comes in. ROEPs Otter Spotter program solicits otter sightings from the public, maps them, and shares the data with wildlife agencies. 🗺 For example, river otters are in greatest danger when they try to cross highways, so ROEP collects otter mortality sightings to identify roadkill hotspots--which guide the design of underpasses that help wildlife move around. . 📅 Join Bay Nature this Thursday (Sept 3) on Zoom at 4pm for a fun and inspiring presentation on river otters from Megan Isadore. Say hello to Empanada! She joined us on 8th September after being rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue medics from West Cornwall after being spotted without her mum on a busy seal haul out. She was incredibly hungry and began approaching other adult seals. After being monitored for 24 hours by Cornwall Research Group Trust volunteers in the hope that her mum would return, and also receiving a few bites from other seals on the beach, the decision was made to lift her to safety. She was given 24 hours of fluids to rehydrate her and is now being weaned onto fish which she loves! She makes a lot of noise when shes hungry to let the team know, she is still well below birth weight but is gaining weight which is fantastic. Because she is so small she is having a bit of trouble regulating her body temperature so you may see her during your visit under her heat lamp having a little snooze. This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. For #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek, we asked our mammalogists to describe each of our five otters so you, their fans, can get to know them better! Today we are spotlighting Maggie. Maggie is nicknamed The Sassy One and is our oldest sea otter at 19 years old. She is a little feisty but super smart, and is most well known for her cup stacking abilities. We also refer to her as our golden girl since her grays grow on the blonder side. Chef’s Note May 22nd, 2020 Today is the United Nations International Day for Biological Diversity to support sustainable development goals. As well, today is the launch of the #chefsforvancouveraquarium fundraiser to raise donations to save the Vancouver Aquarium @vanaqua #savevancouveraquarium. The significance of this day has great meaning as education, research, sustainability efforts, seafood sustainability, and conservation is at the ethos of these organizations initiatives. Huillín (Lontra provocax) Descripción:Cuerpo mediano de hasta 70 cm de largo, con una cola de alrededor de 40 cm. Su piel es negra castaña arriba, y beige en el vientre. Su aspecto es de un gato largo. La longitud total promedio de los adultos es de 1010 mm, cola 400 mm, peso 5 a 6 kilogramos. Cuerpo alargado, cabeza aplastada dorsoventralmente, pie con cinco dedos siendo orlados los anteriores con una pequeña membrana y palmeados los posteriores, que son más largos. #DidYouKnow: Sea otters were abundant along the California shoreline, and their presence helped healthy kelp forests thrive. In the early 20th century, however, fur hunters pushed sea otters to the brink of extinction. Sea otter hunting was officially banned in 1911, but there was little hope of recovery at the time. Then, in 1938, people discovered a small population of sea otters off the Big Sur coast just south of Monterey. Since then, sea otters have made a modest comeback thanks to their protection, aided by the recovery and surrogacy work we have been doing at the Aquarium for the last 30 years. Already, we’re seeing encouraging otter population increases in nearby Elkhorn Slough and other coastal wetlands. Our oceans wellbeing depends on keeping it healthy and resilient in a rapidly changing world. You otter know that this week is a magnificent week indeed because its...Sea Otter Awareness Week! 🦦 Here in Oregon, sea otters remain extinct, but this keystone species deserves attention and appreciation. One reason otters are so important to the nearshore marine ecosystem: kelp forests. “Kelp and sea otters go together, explains our Associate Marine Conservation Director, Dick Vander Schaaf. Otters are very active feeders; they need to eat a lot of food, so they can eat a lot of urchins which have been decimating kelp beds in northern California and southern Oregon. Its Sea Otter Awareness Week! Do you know about the incredible survival story of our endangered Californian sea otters? By the 1930s, most people believed that this subspecies of sea otter had vanished, wiped out by fur traders who coveted its rich pelt. But somehow, a raft of about 50 sea otters survived! 💪 They were tucked away along the remote Big Sur coast, sheltering in a cove at Bixby Creek. In the early 1900s, residents and prospectors began to report sightings of strange, weasel-like animals floating offshore on their backs, including off the Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur in 1914. Then, in the 1930s, as State Route 1 was being built, the raft of survivors was officially “discovered,” and the world realized that California, or southern, sea otters weren’t extinct.
