Antibiotic resistance is now considered a global public health crisis. Some researchers are predicting that by 2050 our resistance to antibiotics will cause up to 10 million deaths every year, outdoing cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide. Antibiotics are (over) used in animal farming due to the intense farming processes that exist within the meat industry. The practice of animals being forced to live in confined, crowded spaces; not being given enough time to recover in-between births; and baby animals being taken away from their mothers too early places a strain on the animals’ health, compromises their immune systems, and increases the risk of disease transmission. Due to this risk some countries use antibiotics as a preventive measure, meaning these medicines are given to animals as soon as they are born, whether they are ill or not. Other countries use antibiotics to make livestock animals grow faster, so that profit margins are increased. Every time we use antibiotics (whether in humans or animals) we risk the development of drug-resistant bacteria (a superbug). By using antibiotics in animals when they are not sick, we are adding to the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing. Remember that saying ‘you are what you eat’? Because our health is closely linked with the health of our ecosystems, and the animals in it, the use of antibiotics in animals can affect humans as diseases can be shared between humans and animals through direct contact. This is not to say we should stop using antibiotics altogether. Antibiotics are needed to protect the health of humans and animals, but should only be used when the animals are already sick. While the vast majority of antibiotic resistance is still caused by overuse in humans, researchers continue to acknowledge that the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture does pose a risk to human health. Limiting antibiotic use in animals is therefore an important step in reducing the risk that antibiotic resistant bugs (that can ultimately affect our health) develop in the first place. - @no_meat_may on Instagram

I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something. I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks? Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash. @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. Rescatan un pequeño Gato Montés tras caer en una trampa metálica Ocurrió en Aluminé donde los guardafaunas neuquinos lograron recuperarlo de su estado crítico de salud. Recuerdan que los carnívoros silvestres nos ofrecen servicios ecológicos al controlar las poblaciones de roedores, conejos y liebres. Aluminé es noticia nuevamente por el rescate de un joven gato montés (Leopardus geoffroyi) que quedó atrapado en trampas metálicas. Una vez más la comunidad demuestra la gran red de personas que piensan la atención y contención de la fauna silvestre. En estos contextos se renueva una pregunta muy recurrente por estos lares ¿Somos capaces como seres humanos de compartir el territorio con otras especies? El animal fue víctima de dos cepos que le produjeron graves heridas al prenderse uno en cada pata trasera. Esto sumado al cuadro de hipotermia generado por las bajas temperaturas y las horas que permaneció inmóvil en la nieve, le generó un estado crítico de salud. El pasado jueves 9 de julio, una vecina del paraje de Abra Ancha avisó al equipo de Guardafaunas que había encontrado un Gato Montés atrapado en dos trampas que ella había ubicado para capturar a un ejemplar de Visón Americano, mamífero exótico que también visita gallineros. Sin embargo el hallazgo fue otro, el felino correspondía a un macho joven muy delgado que debe haberse visto forzado a acercarse a asentamientos humanos para buscar comida. Según comentó la vecina, el mismo Gato Montés ya le había atrapado gallinas antes. Ante el aviso se hizo presente Martín Salazar, de la Dirección Provincial de Fauna, la veterinaria de la Reserva Natural Urbana Quilquelil, Carolina Marull, que cuenta con una vasta experiencia en manejo de fauna silvestre y el Director del Museo municipal El Charrúa, Titi Ricciuto, siempre disponible para estos desafíos Se encontró al Gato Montés con graves heridas en sus dos patas traseras y en estado de hipotermia. Fue sedado y medicado en el mismo gallinero usando instrumental y medicamentos provistos por la veterinaria Gilda Vallejos. Luego fue trasladado a la casa de Titi, la cual ya ha sido refugio de animales silvestres para rehabilitarlo y devolverlo a su hábitat - @laangosturadigital on Instagram

I will never forget this day ever. I was heading into to Logan to work for US Airs VIP services, my inlaws were flying out that morning as well. I got the call to stay home. As we watched things unfold, we decided to leave the city, because they thought the LNG Tanker, a main gas source to Boston, was in the harbor and may be a target. I lived in the North End/Waterfront of Boston at the time, across from Logan. We would take our dog Dooley to Columbus Park every morning and at night, we would bring wine and drink with our neighbors and fellow dog owners. The most haunting part of the 2 weeks following this terrorist act on our country, was the absolute silence. No planes taking off, no traffic on the streets. I will never forget that silence, COMPLETE SILENCE. An interesting update from our trackers in Mana Pools. The Nyamepi pack is well and has been doing a great job protecting its 6 pups. Whisky, the alpha female, left the den with the pups on the 26th August and have been nomadic since. She sadly lost one pup to hyenas a day after she became nomadic but the pack has managed to keep their enemies at bay since. They are doing so well compared to last year, where the pack lost 3 pups within 3 days of leaving the den. Fingers crossed, the pack will successfully raise all 6 to adulthood. Currently, the pack consists of 8 adults, one yearling, Candy (a product of father and daughter), and 6 pups that are a product of brother Gamma, the alpha-male, and sister, Whisky. Both are from the same litter of 2017 by the legendary Black-tip. As we come into spring our rescue service is going to become busier and busier. The female flying foxes are getting to the later stages of their pregnancies and are going to start getting into trouble as they try to find enough food to feed themselves and their baby. We thought it would be a good idea to do a ‘Wildlife Friendly Gardens’ series. So over the next 6 weeks we will be doing a post on a way you can make your property safer for not only bats, but all of our native wildlife. Our first post is a 2 part post on our pets and how we can care for them more responsibly. We would like to start by saying that we love our pets, most of our rehabilitators and rescuers have pet cats and dogs. This is not an anti pet post, we just want to have a discussion. This first part is on dogs. Dog attacks are one of our most common reasons for flying fox rescue and the survival for these flying foxes is incredibly low. Now these are not mean or aggressive dogs, they are lovely family dogs doing what comes naturally to them. It’s our responsibility to ensure they don’t have the opportunity to hurt wildlife. The easiest and most effective solution is to let your dog sleep inside the house at night. This is becoming more and more common and is by far the best way to make your garden safe for nocturnal wildlife. The second way is to secure your dog in an internal yard or smaller fenced area during the night so they have less access to your garden. This is less effective but at least leaves a safe corridor for wildlife to move through your property. Dogs are lovely pets but they can be devastating for local wildlife if not kept responsibly. Additionally, dogs are one of the main reasons for koala fatalities which predominantly occur at night. So keeping your dogs in at night not only helps bats, but koalas as well! Thankfully this pair beat the statistics with Stella sustaining very serious but viable injuries from the dog. ⚠️SAD BREAKING NEWS⚠️ 380 long- finned pilot whales just died in whats now become Australias worst mass stranding on record. It all started on Monday when 270 whales became stuck on sandbars in Macquarie Harbor, near the town of Strahan, on Tasmanias rugged and sparsely populated west coast. Unfortunately, around 90 of the whales had already died by the time they were spotted by authorities, but a rescue mission was quickly launched on Tuesday to try and save the survivors. Rescue teams worked hard to re-float the whales and direct them back to deeper water, with around 30 whales released back out to sea by the end of Tuesday. However, Wednesday brought new horrors with an aerial survey of the area revealing a second group of ~200 long-finned pilot whales had stranded about 10km away in the same harbor. Sadly all 200 whales had perished. These whales were believed to be part of the same mass stranding event near Strahan. As of Wednesday, rescuers have re- floated around 70 whales, with a further 20 of those remaining deemed viable for release. Those who are still alive but are too weak to make it back out to sea will have to be euthanized, and the mammoth task of disposing of 380 two-tonne dead whales will begin. While some may be tempted to blame human activity, its thought this mass stranding had natural causes. Pilot whales are a deep-diving species with incredibly strong social bonds. Its possible one leading individual could have mistakenly led the whole group to shore and then fallen victim to the areas gently sloping beaches. Tasmanias previous biggest stranding was in 1935 with 294 pilot whales. The remaining costs will be funded through Zoos Victoria. Unbelievably Rare!!!! This unusual Tusked Manatee was spotted yesterday near Three Sisters in Crystal River Preserve. This amazing photograph was taken by Emily Derben @emilyderben while visiting from Ontario Canada on a Manatee tour. Tusked Manatees are extremely rare and most often seen off Cuba and not in Florida waters. They are distant relatives of the Elephant and Walrus and only found in a very small area of the Caribbean. Witnesses say this young tusked manatee was in good health and swimming with the rest of the population. He is probably in the area for a short while. It is said these rare appearances have only been Photographed two other times on April 1st 1934 and April 1st 1979. Thanks for Sharing this important find Emily! As one of the Zoo’s senior residents, Max the cougar receives extra specialized care from our vet team. Max is 16 years old, and in his golden years has had a tough time properly grooming his own back. As a result, he’s developed matted fur along his back, which could result in skin irritation and hygiene issues. Matted fur also can’t keep Max warm in the winter! Our vet team helps him out by shaving off that matted fur before it gets too cold so he has time to grow back a warm winter coat. While Max was under anesthesia, we also took the opportunity to perform a full physical exam. We keep a close eye on Max’s health, in particular his kidney function, which has been impaired in his old age. Max is now back in his outdoor habitat with his buddy Teeka. Say hello to Empanada! She joined us on 8th September after being rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue medics from West Cornwall after being spotted without her mum on a busy seal haul out. She was incredibly hungry and began approaching other adult seals. After being monitored for 24 hours by Cornwall Research Group Trust volunteers in the hope that her mum would return, and also receiving a few bites from other seals on the beach, the decision was made to lift her to safety. She was given 24 hours of fluids to rehydrate her and is now being weaned onto fish which she loves! She makes a lot of noise when shes hungry to let the team know, she is still well below birth weight but is gaining weight which is fantastic. Because she is so small she is having a bit of trouble regulating her body temperature so you may see her during your visit under her heat lamp having a little snooze. This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. FWC biologists, law enforcement and partners recently rescued a manatee entangled in fishing line in Key Largo. The 10 foot, 1100-pound female had monofilament fishing line entangled around both of her flippers. Biologists were able to successfully remove the line from the left flipper in the field, but the animal needed surgery to remove the deeply embedded line in the right flipper, so the manatee was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando. Upon recovery the manatee will be released back into the waters surrounding Key Largo. Please do your part to prevent entanglements, carry a container with a lid to store trash or used fishing line (e.g., tennis ball canister or coffee can) and recycle all monofilament fishing line into a monofilament recycling bin.
