« TOTKV OH-ONVKV » STORY OF THE FIRE - told through Seminole patchwork. + The first photo is a landscape of mountains and trees on fire under a starry sky. + The second photo shows animals (birds) escaping and water being used to extinguish the fire. + I’ve been really preoccupied with everything that I haven’t felt like making art. This piece helped me start to process all the anxiety I’m having right now. + [EDIT]: I couldn’t think of way to articulate what I’ve been feeling and seeing with these fires. How could I describe it without using photos? Because I don’t have any and while it’s the reality of our situation that doesn’t mean seeing those photos of the earth burning aren’t hard to look at. I used patchwork designs as a way to talk about fires that could be “read” as both a story but also as a photograph of the landscape. Normally, these coloured sheets are used to calibrate printing machines. The gradients and lines are scanned allowing the machines to be optimized accordingly. The functional aesthetic of these sheets, which are seen as purely functional and are thrown away by the hundreds after use, have always fascinated me! Initially I had only planned on printing onto the sheets, but within the process I was given the opportunity to incorporate some elements of my own. Subsequently a final layer was printed, after the machines had been successfully calibrated. The negative form of the dog brings out the colorful elements and the final result is great advertising for the printers and myself, as well as awesome gift wrapping paper. Classic upcycling! Em seu livro Políticas do Design², Ruben Pater relata um conflito curioso entre o chinês tradicional e o chinês simplificado: a grafia da palavra amor. Enquanto no chinês tradicional o símbolo para coração (心) está no centro do amor (愛), no chinês simplificado ele (e mais alguns outros traços) foram substituídos pelo símbolo utilizado para amigos (友). While clearing out the attic with my stepson recently, I came across a box of album sleeve artwork created by Pauline Kennedy aka Caramel Crunch. She was responsible for the design of my album and single covers and my ad campaigns and t-shirts from 1984’s Brewing Up to Don’t Try This At Home in 1991. Pauline was a long-term collaborator with Barney Bubbles, who designed the sleeve for Life’s A Riot with Spy vs Spy. The pair first worked together at Stiff Records in the mid-70s. For a while Pauline went off be the art director at the NME, but by the time I came knocking, they were working together again. When Barney took his life in late 1983, Pauline picked up the torch and took over designing my artwork. In her first commission, the sleeve of the Brewing Up album, she utilised an illustration that Barney had done for my run of gigs at the Captain’s Cabin as the striking image on the front cover. In the days before Photoshop, designing an album sleeve was as much about draughtsmanship as it was artistic verve. Pauline would create an artwork by hand, drawing with a rapidograph pen, utilising a bevelled edge protractor to prevent the ink from blotting, taking images of typeset lettering with a photo-mechanical transfer camera. She developed the pictures herself and then literally – with scissors and cow gum – cut and paste the letters onto a board. This required a number of technical skills, not least estimating the number and size of letters that would fit into the space available. Sometimes, she would be required to produce a freehand drawing. The illustration on the cover of Levi Stubbs’ Tears was drawn by Pauline, as were all the figures on the front of Don’t Try This At Home. When computers began to dominate design and the size of CDs covers gave little opportunity for artistic detail, Pauline decided to shut up shop and start a new life outside of London and the pressures of the record industry. She rang me one day to say she was throwing all her artwork out and if I wanted my originals, I should get round there sharpish to save them from the skip. Needless to say, I was over in a flash. I created this painting in the attempt to shift the way we relate to our food and the systems that produce what we eat. It is a call to treat our diet as divine and to develop systems to produce sustenance that are sustainable and encompassing. Three new releases out today. First up, the new CONTAINER album is finally released in full. Two copies of Blue vinyl remain at our Bandcamp and the inverted version will be shipping soon as long as the health crisis allows. Of course there is the CD too which sounds loud as fuck and looks smart. Secondly, there are two new Helm live albums made available at Bandcamp. Saturnalia is a recording from the Saturnalia festival at Macao in Milan a couple of years ago. Oregon Crisis is a recording from the Portland date of the USA tour with Blanck Mass and Steve Hauschildt. Both are mastered by John Hannon and Jack Callahan respectively and are to try and help with costs incurred due to the COVID19 outbreak. Also as Bandcamp waver their fees today, all digital income received from Bandcamp will be given to the artists so now is a good time to stock up on missing back catalogue items. Et puis, six mois se sont écoulés entre ce numéro et le précédent, en mars 2020, presque une autre dimension. Avec l’ensemble des secteurs artistiques, culturels et événementiels à l’arrêt total, la pause ne souffrait aucune hésitation à l’heure du (premier ?) confinement. Mais la reprise est, elle, longtemps demeurée abstraite - elle n’est même pas à l’ordre du jour pour tous (une pensée aux scènes de musiques). Le monde d’après la Covid-19 attendra donc encore, car nous restons dans le temps de l’incertitude. Celui où les conditions pour organiser et assister à un événement culturel peuvent évoluer d’un jour à l’autre, mais où les initiatives pour résister et imaginer de nouvelles formes se forgent. Ce numéro est imprégné de ce sentiment : à la fois point d’étape - nous y interrogeons différents acteurs du spectacle sur l’impact de la crise - ; et sélection de rendez-vous qui pourraient/ devraient se tenir ces prochaines semaines. Comme une version artistique du chat de Schrödinger. Here’s something I made recently. Finally got around to setting up a 4 layer screenprinting press that was gifted to me by a friend a while ago that I hadn’t had the time, space, or resources to get going. I’ve spent the past couple of weeks getting this all together in working order. I decided to make this piece for my first experiment (4 colors) and even though it was a messy (and frustrating) process, a few still managed to turn out okay. You can swipe to see one of those. I’m planning on making another run of these with hopefully neater results. I’ll be selling them on A3+ stock (13x19) for $30 with shipping included anywhere in the US. I’ll be selling them once I make more. I’m also going to start taking on custom shirt or print orders (either designing or printing or both) and will be charging a fair price as I start out and get a hang of it. I’ll also be making new prints in the near future, and I’m excited to be thinking of poster design outside of a promotional context until events return.
