The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) was recently recognized with a top award for outstanding wastewater collection system operations. “After many years of mismanagement and dysfunction, this award is evidence that the DeKalb County Watershed Management Department has made verifiable progress and improvement,” said DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. “DeKalb has prioritized enhancing customer service, properly treating wastewater to protect the environment and ensuring the viability and integrity of the system.” DWM was awarded the 2019 Collection Systems Gold Award at the Georgia Association of Water Professionals (GAWP) Fall Conference for operating the wastewater system in an outstanding manner. GAWP is Georgias largest professional water and wastewater organization and recognizes organizations that take exceptional efforts to properly manage, operate and maintain collection systems. The GAWP award recognizes utilities that strive to continually improve their systems through proper management, maintenance, and operation. The award criteria follow the practices set forth in the DeKalb County Capacity, Management, Operation and Maintenance program including preventative maintenance, system evaluation, rehabilitation programs and training, among many others. DeKalb County annually processes, treats and releases 12 billion gallons of clean water into the South River through two wastewater treatment plants, Snapfinger and Pole Bridge. The plants have also been recognized by GAWP for 100 percent compliance with pollutant removal levels set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. - @itsindekalbga on Instagram

The greatest of things are built one brick at a time. This is Monte. My first dog. My first love. Breed plays a huge role in how he sees the world and forms relationships. Unlike labs or goldens, huskies take time to form bonds with their humans. Monte is a one person dog. He genuinely doesn’t care about any human other than me. I had to build this bond with him interaction by interaction, brick by brick. But while it might take 1,000 bricks to build a wall, it only can take one to tear it down. Huskies are sensitive. They remember, they hold grudges. But once you’ve won their trust you hold it for life. My sweet husky is currently struggling to adapt to our newest household addition. But as his owner and mom I I owe it to him to help continue to build our brick wall to incorporate a new puppy. So I’m cautious. Monte eats first, Monte gets to sleep in the bed. He gets additional treats and privileges that the puppy doesn’t. But most importantly he gets independent snuggle time and play. I’m by no means perfect, but by reminding him that he’s still loved and valued is a critical part of our recent family growth. Have you ever added a furry family member? I finished my internship at with the NCAA back in June, and I’ve been on the hunt for my next home since the Spring. Tomorrow, I’ll be starting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as the Diversity and Inclusion Director in the life skills department within athletics. That means I’ll be creating, implementing, and working to help the student-athletes and athletics staff be more inclusive in programs, in their day-to-day efforts, and long term planning on what diversity and inclusion means to the department. There are a number of words I can use to describe how I’ve felt since I’ve accepted the role. Excited, nervous, elated, but most importantly, thankful. No better feeling than to see your vision come to life! On top of that, what an amazing day it was to see the look and excitement on my Dad and Uncles face as our new @supremedsllc service van is completed! When they came to me to take the lead in designing the look of the van, I had no clue where to even begin. I had never used Adobe Illustrator before, yet only any other designing program at that. But what I did know is that they trusted my creative input and that’s all the fuel I needed to get started. YouTube became my teacher for the past month and with the help from my man Tony over at @yakgraphicsinc, he and his PHENOMENAL staff MADE IT HAPPEN! Truly blessed to be building a sustainable and reliable business with these two driven, focused, and wonderful black men!! This is my brother-in-law @themayosantos. He and my stepsister are two of my favourite people on the planet. Mayo is co-owner of @revolgirl, an inclusive period-proof underwear company that supports all menstruaters..... . THINK ABOUT THAT. . . Mayo, a black man, owns a company that breaks down stereotypes surrounding menstruation. He will never personally experience menstruation. He will never experience cramps or PMS. He will literally never walk in the shoes of a person with a period. And yet he has educated himself and empathized and listened to the point that he has conversations with women on a DAILY BASIS about their PERIOD 🤯. . . Sara and Mayo recently came over for dinner and I realized I had never once asked Mayo about his experience as a black man in Vancouver until that night. I like to tell myself that it’s because I love Mayo and I don’t notice the fact that he’s black. But upon self reflection, I realized I had never asked him because I ASSUMED he didn’t experience racism in Vancouver. I ASSUMED that “that kind of stuff” doesn’t happen here. It literally never crossed my mind. If Mayo can have conversations with white women about their period, then what the hell is my excuse for not having more conversations about race in my day to day life? The answer is NONE. Is it potentially uncomfortable? YES. Will I ever experience the challenges that my black friends and family face? NO. But am I willing to buck up and potentially say the wrong thing and ask the wrong question and potentially look stupid? YES. I want to say thank you to Mayo for answering my questions with grace and for being a daily inspiration of what it looks like to challenge social norms. Todays #Happytail is Tyson! 🐶 ❤️ From Tysons mom: Tyson and I were a match made in heaven and every moment together has been the best time. He loves going to the dog park to play with all his friends, long walks/run, and TONS of cuddles! He puts his head right on your neck to be as close as possible to you during the cuddle sessions. He came home not knowing any training but has learned so quick and became the best dog/companion I could’ve asked for. We just celebrated his first birthday and he got super spoiled! I’m so thankful for ACS and my new best friend, I can’t imagine not having him in my life now. We are so happy Tyson is living happily ever after with his new best friend! 🐾 Its incredible what a strong bond with a pet can do.
