“I am my ancestors wildest dreams” - Who would have thought three little long-legged girls would grow up to be a lawyer (Danielle Torain, JD), scientist (Jamila Torain, PhD MPH) and physician (Me! Maya Torain, MD). We are our ancestors wildest dreams. Our grandma always says, “If your great grandfather could only see you. He’d be so proud.” This Juneteenth, I take a moment to thank those that have come before us, acknowledge how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. . I am proud of all we have accomplished, but the work has just begun. In our respective fields, we will continue to work for the liberation and advancement of our community, and attack from all angles. Danielle, the director of the Open Society Institute, fighting in the boardroom for the redistribution of funding to communities of color and organizations working for change. Jamila, a policy analyst, conducting research for Capitol Hill and advocating for an equitable, just healthcare system. And me! A new physician, training to be a psychiatrist, working to eliminate the health care disparities that affect my family, my patients and my community. . Yani Cimahi Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, S.H., L.L.M., Ph.D., mengukuhkan 3.028 mahasiswa baru Selasa (22/9), dalam acara Sidang Senat Terbuka yang dilaksanakan di Gedung Sasana Krida kampus Cimahi secara daring. Dalam acara tersebut mahasiswa baru hanya diwakili 8 orang saja yang hadir secara fisik, yang mencerminkan 8 Fakultas, yakni Fakultas Teknik (FT), Ekonomi dan Bisnis (FEB), Sains dan Informatika (FSI), Kedokteran (FK), FISIP, Psikologi (F.Psi), Farmasi dan Fakultas Teknologi Manufaktur (FTM). Rektor dalam pidato sambutannya mengucapkan terima kasih yang sebesar-besarnya kepada mahasiswa baru dan orang tua mahasiswa, yang telah mempercayakan dan memilih Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani sebagai tempat studi lanjut. Percayalah.., putra putri bapak/ibu akan mendapat pendididkan yang terbaik di Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani, ungkap Rektor. Lebih lanjut Rektor menyampaikan tentang pengembangan Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani menuju smart digital campus, yang tidak lama lagi akan segera dimulai pembangunannya. Hal tersebut mendapat dukungan penuh dari bapak Kepala Staf Angkatan Darat (KASAD) Jenderal TNI Andika Perkasa, selaku Ketua Dewan Pembina Yayasan Kartika Eka Paksi (YKEP). Saat dikonfirmasi terkait Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru (PMB) Tahun Akademik 2020/2021, Rektor menjelaskan adanya penurunan sekitar 12 persen dari target sekitar 3500 mahasiswa. Hal tersebut dikarenakan adanya dampak pandemi covid 19, yang juga dirasakan oleh teman-teman perguruan tinggi lain. Sementara itu, Ketua Pengurus Yayasan Kartika Eka Paksi, Mayjen (Purn.) For the past few months, being at home, I’ve tried to avoid reflecting on my time at Penn. Foreign students flock Osmania University Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, provisional admission given to 800 students from more than 60 countries Hyderabad: Pandemic or not, Osmania University remains to be a sought after destination for international students. Proving that the Covid-19 pandemic has not dampened the enthusiasm of international students seeking admissions in various courses offered by OU, the university has already received 800 applications from foreign students from over 60 countries, who have now been granted provisional admissions this year. The number of admissions could go up by another 50 as the admission process for the BE/BTech/ME/MTech courses are still underway. Another positive development in this year’s admissions is that 62 applications were received for PhD admissions by the university from foreign students through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Ethiopian Embassy. During the last 21 years, beginning with the enrolment of 77 foreign students in 1999, foreign admissions had peaked in 2014-15 with 1,744 students from 87 countries joining several courses under the OU. Till last year, a total of 17,472 foreign students pursued various courses offered by the varsity at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Due to various factors, the number of admissions came down to 450 in 2018-19 and 424 in 2019-20. At the end of the 2019-20 academic year, 1,856 foreign students from 68 countries were studying in the OU. To attract foreign students from various countries, the OU initiated several programmes including hostel facility for both boys and girls separately, considering fee waiver to some extent in certain cases of government-sponsored candidates, online admissions and online payment systems. This picture is from my masters graduation. I’ve been lucky to have the access, support and means to obtain a higher education. However I’ve also experienced racism and xenophobia on 2 occasions: once in college and once in 2nd grade. . My 2nd grade teacher made my life hell. She always made me ‘pull my card’ on the discipline wall for being disruptive even when I was sitting quietly. My grades were always lower than expected. She accused me of trying to kill my class project crayfish. She rarely called on me when I raised my hand. I lost reading club privileges, my parents started tutoring me at home because my grades were worrying. These are just some of the daily humiliations I remember. . My parents were perplexed. I was miserable. . At the parent teacher conference I remember them asking how I went from a good, well behaved student to one with discipline issues and she said the 1st grade teacher was likely letting me off easy. I finally told my parents I wasn’t doing anything but was getting in trouble anyway. She responded by calling me a liar. I still remember how affectless her face was. I started crying and told her she was the liar, not me. My parents believed me but likely had no idea what to do. . I felt dehumanized, humiliated and insignificant that entire year. As soon as I started 3rd grade though, it all went away. However my little sister ended up with the same teacher in 2nd grade and also had a bad experience. . I can’t imagine what it’s like to go through life with that sort of dehumanizing and humiliating treatment. When I think of systemic racism, I think about my minor, transitory experience that ultimately didn’t impact my ability to move forward. I think of the children that experience this for years, see their friends, family and people that look like them be othered, humiliated and picked on. I can surmise how damaging it must be. . This is why the #blm matters. This is why #allyship matters. I am thrilled, blessed, and honored to announce that I have officially completed my Masters of Biomedical Studies and will be beginning medical school this fall. If you would have told me a year ago that I’d be typing those words in my near future, I wouldn’t have believed it. This past year has been filled with both struggle and growth. So many times I doubted myself and the plan that God has for me. I was depressed for months and at one point I almost gave up. I remember praying and asking God to give me strength to see this through and just allow me to receive an acceptance from ONE medical school... but He really outdid himself. Every day, I wake up so thankful that God has answered my prayers and blessed me several times over. This has been a long, difficult journey, but now it all seems worth it. A little Black girl educated by the Mississippi public school system is going to be a doctor someday. Words can’t express how grateful that I am. I’m forever indebted to everyone who has been my support throughout this pre-med journey. I can’t wait to use my God given abilities to impact our people and our communities. I first just want to thank God for all He has done for my family and I. This was purely all by His grace and will and not my own power. The one thing that college has taught me is that no matter how much you think you have it all planned out, you never will. After 5 years, 2 major changes, countless considerations of dropping out, numerous late nights, a couple of all nighters, and successfully being able to skipout on my senior presentation, I obtained my Bachelors in Economics and a minor in Business Administration. The long-term effects of the #COVID19 pandemic are already beginning to be felt in American academia even as the pandemic continues to its immediate ravages across the country. More than 50 universities have declared that they will be suspending Ph.D. admissions in a range of humanities and social science disciplines. Perhaps the most worrying sign is that this includes a large number of wealthy private schools, including several Ivy-League colleges with large endowments. But many of these, including Harvard, Brown, the University of Chicago, Princeton, Cornell, and New York University have announced that they are suspending admission to a number of doctoral programs. The University of Pennsylvania has closed admission to all doctorates funded by the School of Arts and Sciences, and Columbia has suspended admission to around 20 Ph.D. programs, including Mathematics, Statistics, almost all the language and literature programs, as well several of the area studies disciplines. #MeetTheBoard - Meet Luis Guerrero, your 2020 - 2021 Event Chair! This is Luis’s fourth year on the board. Luis is a South Sacramento native. Luis graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Sacramento State University in the Spring of 2017. He also received his Math teaching credential from the CSUS Teaching Credential program in the Spring of  2019. Luis teaches math at McClatchy High School, and continues his work as an Audio Engineer for the Sacramento Kings and for many production companies across Northern California. Luis is also a Turntablist DJ and DJs on the Fuego Nights Mix Show on 103.5FM in Sacramento. Luis will attend Sacramento State this Fall as a student in the College of Education Behavioral Science Gender Equity Studies graduate program. Guys!!! I am now an ER DOCTOR and #clinicalmonster at my #1 ranked program for residency, SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn!! I cant tell you how happy I am after going through nearly 13 yrs of schooling to become a Doctor!! ✔️Overcame being an ONLY child of a SINGLE MOM. ✔️Overcame a STEP 1 score that most people do not recover from. ✔️President of the EM Student Association x2 yrs ✔️Showed PASSION in my specialty since DAY 1. ✔️Went to conferences and made hundreds of connections. ✔️ Met great mentors including @dr.mo777 and @siriema22 ✔️Made the most important investment in a tutor for my STEP 2 exam and made a insane jump in my score (DM me for details on my tutor, as I know the amount of stress these exams place on medical students!) I officially graduated from the two best places where I found family, where I learned many things, and where I grew up. Universitas Airlangga. Orang-orang yang ada di sekelilingku dan kegiatan yang aku lakukan selama ini mampu membentuk aku menjadi lebih baik. Ibu @yeyen.46 adalah saksi sampai akhirnya skripsiku dapat selesai di bulan Juni 2019. Beasiswa Iman Usman. Tempat dimana aku tidak pernah membayangkan bahwa aku akan ada di sana. Dikelilingi oleh orang-orang yang senantiasa mau belajar dan mau untuk berbagi kepada yang lain. Pada tiap-tiap pertemuan, aku selalu belajar banyak hal baru. Mulai dari belajar membuat CV sampai belajar memahami diri kita sendiri. Di luar sana, mungkin aku banyak dituntut untuk menjadi ini dan itu, but here aku tidak dituntut untuk apapun, yang perlu aku lakukan hanyalah melakukan yang terbaik dari apa yang aku punya. Banyak hal-hal kecil yang juga mungkin tidak diapresiasi di luar sana, tetapi di sini, sekecil apapun proses adalah sebuah pencapaian. Setahun mungkin tidak lama, tapi aku, Shevierra, akan tetap terus give impacts selama-lama-lamanya!
