November 2015, five months after graduating nursing school and about two months into my job as a hospice nurse, I called the suicide hotline. I had spent the past several months working night shift at a hospice center. Over those few months, my self-esteem, anxiety and self-worth completely fell away. When I got the job, I was elated. End of life care was, and is, something that I am deeply passionate about. Bearing witness and caring for someone, along with their family, at those moments, is to me an honor and a gift. Night shift was brutal on my body- I never felt like I could catch up and constantly felt like I was in a fog. I made mistakes: the biggest of these were med errors that I would catch myself and, horrified, self report. I felt like I was short-circuiting: the interface that I had to work with to see what meds to give and their dosages was on an iPad that I found impossible to read. I couldn’t enlarge the font and my eyes would seem to skip the lines, mixing up dosages and times. Management met with me and placed me on probation. After making two such errors, I was told that if I made another one I would be fired and they would report me to the state. I have never felt more like a failure in my life. I started to visualize driving off the bridge that I had to cross to and from work. At 0300 in the morning I would go hide in the dark of one of the offices, stuffing my fist in my mouth while I cried. I was terrified that I would make another mistake, that I would hurt one of my patients. I felt that all I had worked for for the past four years, to become a nurse, was all for nothing. Nursing was all I aspired to, and in a very sick way, represented to me overcoming the obstacle of my own illnesses. I deeply cared about my patients and couldn’t live with the idea that I might harm them. I thought I was an unsafe nurse. One night before another shift, yet another night I hadn’t been able to sleep, I found myself myself sobbing, in the bathtub, with a knife. The idea of continuing to live caused me immeasurable pain. The Islay Cask Company Lavatera ??? is a sample I wanted to share because it combines two of my favourite places in the world: Scotland & the Rhinegau in Germany. A 8 year old Caol Ila Whisky finished in a Pinot Noir Barrel from Balthasar Ress, a Winegut 40 miles from my home in Germany. Now for the Whisky. Bottled at a mighty 57% abv it packs a #whiskypunch! The sound of the Whisky got my taste buds excited but alas the balance, well: just doesn’t balance. The warm smokiness I love from the Caol Ila is hindered by the Red Wine finish, yet the finish doesn’t deliver a rich, chewy sweetness I was longing for. The flavour feels a little lost; like a disharmonised relationship which has either gone sour or needs longer to over come difficulties. Would I buy a €99 from The Islay Cask Company? Yes, but purely because of my relationship & love for the Rhinegau. For me, it’s a personal buy.
