The planned landing site for NASAā€™s Perseverance rover was facing Earth this morning about 4 hours before launch. The specific target, Jezero crater, is too small to be resolved from this distance (60 M miles / 90 M km), but the surrounding area of dark volcanic rock can be seen (Syrtis Major). Marsā€™ southern polar ice cap is also visible. I wish I had a telescope large enough to watch the landing in February. . 2020.7.30, 4:05 AM 10-inch dobsonian, 6mm eyepiece, 2x barlow, hand-held iPhone 6. 205 frames from a short video clip stacked in Lynkeos. . #countdowntomars #mars2020 #NASA #perseverance #perseverancerover #mars2020rover #mars #astrophotography #telescope #iphone6 #stargazing #youresa #universetoday - @svenry on Instagram

An edge-on Spiral Galaxy known as the Needle Galaxy (NGC 4565) captured by @cosmic_background from his backyard in California. This galaxy is at around 40 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It lies close to the North Galactic Pole and has a visual magnitude of approximately 10.42 and NGC 4565 is one of the brightest members galaxies of the Coma I Group. NGC 4565 has at least two satellite galaxies, one of which is interacting with it. It has a population of roughly 240 globular clusters, more than the Milky Way. @cosmic_background shares few thoughts with these magnificent photos: ā€œThe physics of massive objects is fascinating, complex, yet predictable. Get enough gas and dust in one spot, and star formation is inevitable, with planets borne of the protoplanetary disc that swirls around them. With even more dust, the formation of galaxies is inevitable, which will take on predictable shapes based on their size. With enough dust, you can build absolutely anything. If youre curious how to get started in astrophotography, I have a video pinned to my highlights that walks through the gear I use. The raw data from this and most of the rest of my deep space images is available for patrons, a great way to learn some aspects of this hobby before investing in equipment.ā€ . . #needlegalaxy #deepspace #astrophoto #astronomy #stargazing #deepskyphotography #deepsky #astrophotography #galaxy #spiralgalaxy #amazinglongexposure #longexposurephotography #photography #space #universe - @amateurastronomyclub on Instagram

Each of these Hubble Space Telescope snapshots reveals four distorted images of a background quasar surrounding the central core of a foreground massive galaxy. The multiple quasar images were produced by the gravity of the foreground galaxy, which is acting like a magnifying glass by warping the quasarā€™s light in an effect called gravitational lensing. The images were taken between 2003 and 2004 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. Credit: NASA, ESA, S.H. This photo is not public for its aesthetic beauty that objectively does not have. The public for the particularity it contains. That whitish speck just noticeable above the star is Galaxy IC4717, the furthest Galaxy I have photographed. In fact, it is found at a distance of 500 million light years! Fascinating to think that the photons of light emitted by the Galaxy started when the first vertebrates were starting to form here on earth. They traveled for 500 million years and traveled billions of km before reaching and imprinting themselves on the sensor of my Reflex forming this photograph. #galassia#ic4717#galassielontane#galassiedifficili#astronomia#astrofotografia#fotografia#foto#fotoastronomiche#cieloprofondo#deepsky#canon#reflex#telescopio#skywatcher#astrophotography#photography#photonight#night#stars#light#astronomy - @_inter_sidera_versor_ on Instagram

This months astrophoto feature is of The Occultation of Mars by our Moon and was taken by James Mack. James writes, On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:09:07 am the Red Planet Mars was occulted by our moon. A relatively rare event even though there are five occultations in 2020 that involve Mars, with this the only one visible in the U.S. and Central America. The others take place in March, August, September, and October, and are all mostly visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Occultations are very interesting not only intrinsically but scientifically. At the time of this event ... The Moon was a 24.8-day old waning crescent. With a Visual Magnitude of -7.9 and Apparent Size of 31.1 arc min and was 23.7% illuminated. Its Distance from Earth was 238,641 miles and its Diameter is 2,159 mi. Mars on the other hand with its Visual Magnitude of +1.2 and Apparent Size of 5.2 arc sec was 91.9% illuminated. Its Distance from earth was 167,956,633 mi and its Diameter is 4221 mi. This is part of our monthly feature of astrophotography submitted by members of the Local Group of Deep Sky Observers (LGDSO). We went out last night to see how magnified the stars and planets would be through the @swarovskioptik_outdoor @swarovskioptik_birding spotting scope. It blew our minds!!! Then we fitted the VPA (Variable Phone Adapter) on the scope and managed to get this photo of Jupiter ON MY CELL PHONE!! Jupiter has 79 Galilean moons (named because Galileo first studied them in about 1610) orbiting it, but without a huge telescope we can see 3 of them here. ____________________________________________________ #meetsouthafrica #secretafrica #travelandbeyond #foreversouthafrica #ig_southafrica #naturewildlifephotography #animal_wild_hd #earthofficial #wildgeography #visualsofsouthafrica #wildlifeonearth #wildestafrica #capturethewild #getawaymagazine #WildPlanet #instagram_sa #raw_africa #onlyafrica #yourshotphotographer #WildAboutAfrica #astrology #astrophotography #jupiter #galileanmoons #seetheunseen - @clive.cowie.wildlife on Instagram

Dark matter is an invisible form of matter that makes up most of the universeā€™s mass and creates its underlying structure. Dark matterā€™s gravity drives normal matter (gas or dust) to collect and build up into stars and galaxies. Although astronomers cannot see dark matter, they can detect its influence by observing how the gravity of massive galaxy clusters, which contain dark matter, bends and distorts the light of more-distant galaxies located behind the cluster. This phenomenon is called gravitational lensing. Depiction of gravitational lensing.Large galaxy clusters contain both dark matter and normal matter. The immense gravity of all this material warps the space around the cluster, causing the light from objects located behind the cluster to be distorted and magnified. This phenomenon is called gravitational lensing. This sketch shows paths of light from a distant galaxy that is being gravitationally lensed by a foreground cluster. Neptune and Triton! šŸ”šŸ¤©ā  ā  Neptune hit opposition this week, and heres my latest image of the beautiful blue planet and its moon Triton. The skies were quite nice while I imaged this duo the other day, and luckily I caught this right before the fires went crazy and the skies clouded over.ā  ā  Heres a cool fact: Triton orbits Neptune backwards compared to the other bodies of our solar system. Most of the objects that orbit our star go in the same direction. And their moons also go in that same direction as well. However, there are exceptions, like Triton that go the other way. Orbits like this are suspected to have occurred when one body captures another as opposed to them coming into existence together. For this reason, it is suspected that Triton is an outsider to Neptune, and that the moon just got caught in Neptunes gravity as it passed by one day.ā  ā  Also, zoom in, and let me know your thoughts. Theres a tiny chance I pulled a little surface detail from the clouds, but Im guessing its just processing artifacts.ā  ā  I used this image in my larger solar system collage print recently too. Signs of life on Venus? An international team of astronomers today announced the discovery of a rare molecule ā€” phosphine ā€” in the clouds of Venus. On Earth, this gas is only made industrially or by microbes that thrive in oxygen-free environments. Astronomers have speculated for decades that high clouds on Venus could offer a home for microbes ā€” floating free of the scorching surface but needing to tolerate very high acidity.ā  ā  Confirming their discovery required using 45 antennas of the @alma.observatory in Chile, in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner.ā  ā  The international team, which includes researchers from the UK, US and Japan, estimates that phosphine exists in Venusā€™s clouds at a small concentration, only about twenty molecules in every billion. Following their observations, they ran calculations to see whether these amounts could come from natural non-biological processes on the planet. Some ideas included sunlight, minerals blown upwards from the surface, volcanoes, or lightning, but none of these could make anywhere near enough of it. These non-biological sources were found to make at most one ten thousandth of the amount of phosphine that the telescopes saw.ā  ā  The team believes their discovery is significant because they can rule out many alternative ways to make phosphine, but they acknowledge that confirming the presence of ā€œlifeā€ needs a lot more work. Although the high clouds of Venus have temperatures up to a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius, they are incredibly acidic ā€” around 90% sulphuric acid ā€” posing major issues for any microbes trying to survive there.ā  ā  For more information check the link in bio.ā  ā  Image credit: @esoastronomy /M. Morning soldiers!
