“What exercises should I be doing to lose weight/fat?” • I get asked this a lot, and have asked myself this a lot over the years, googling till my fingers fell off and ending up with workouts that had me doing a lot of jumping and running, leaving me feeling totally depleted (not my fave) • The truth is is that there is no one perfect exercise that will help you lose weight more than another-not even the ones I named above. But I name these exercises above because they are ones that use multiple muscle groups at one time-they are “compound” exercises. And hence the ones that will give you you’re biggest return on value. • They are also exercises that will help to build muscle-which if you look back to my post last week(directly below this one!), can help you increase your RMR and help you burn more calories even while at rest. • You can do Zumba, you can run, you can do yoga-but I do believe these exercises should make up the bulk of your training protocol if you are looking for fat loss that results in an overall “toned” body. • Do these consistently and correctly while maintaining your caloric deficit and you will see the simplicity that can come with weight/fat loss. • It isn’t always easy-but it can be uncomplicated! I think that the word “yet” is the most underutilized word for people with anxiety. We tell ourselves we haven’t met our soulmate. We say we’re stuck with debt and suck at savings. We say we’re out of work, our job has furloughed/fired us, or we have no idea what’s going to happen with our job. We say we’re not in shape, or 20lbs overweight with no idea what to do. We say we’re not successful. My friends, the answer is one simple word: “Yet.” As long as you have the belief in yourself that one day you can and will... and one day things will get better, then all you have to do is qualify those sentences with “YET.” I’m not a millionaire yet. I haven’t met the love of my life yet. I don’t have my dream job yet. Reframe your thinking in a more optimistic way by repeating those sentences to yourself morning, noon, and night. Give yourself permission to be patient with what’s coming to you and the process.Give yourself credit and give yourself love. Raise your hand if you’ve ever struggled to eat after hard training days 🙋🏼‍♀️ This is something I hear often from athletes, so I wanted to breakdown why this happens and what you can do to combat the appetite suppression that comes from hard training sessions Your body basically has two different states: 🥊fight or flight (during exercise): sympathetic nervous system is activated, stress hormones go up and hunger hormones go down, blood flow moves away from the core towards the extremities, nutrients go to working muscles 😴 rest and digest (after exercise): parasympathetic nervous system is activated, stress hormones decrease and hunger increases. Nutrients go towards rebuilding muscles and replenishing energy stores During hard training sessions, and for a couple of hours after, your body is in the “fight or flight” mode, which works against fueling because your appetite is suppressed The tricky thing is, on hard training days, our fueling needs go up. So what can you do to meet your fueling needs when you don’t feel hungry? 💧 stay hydrated! Replenish both fluids AND electrolytes after training sessions and throughout the day 🍹 use cold drinks like chocolate milk or smoothies. This can help lower your core temperature and help you get in some nutrients, which can stimulate your appetite 🍉 use fruits for carbs first thing after your workout. They can help with hydration and provide easy to digest nutrients 🍿 eat more snacks. Rather than forcing yourself to eat large meals, break them down into several snacks throughout the day For the same reason you feel less hungry on hard days, you’ll most likely feel hungrier on easy days. If you are new to this space, welcome! I can remember just how confusing and, honestly pretty shocking, it was to learn that conventional dieting wasn’t as ‘heathy’ as it’s proclaimed to be. In fact, it’s quite destructive to our mental and physical health, unsustainable, and rooted in several forms of oppression. Additionally, dieting is the most important predictor of new eating disorders in adolescents (Patton et al 1999). Similarly, the best known environmental contributor to the development of eating disorders is the sociocultural idealization of thinness (Culbert et al 2015). Where are some good places to start to learn more? I’ve got several resources linked in my bio, a resource section on my website, and highly recommend starting with the books Intuitive Eating and Anti-Diet (both linked on my website). Another place to start is journaling your own history/timeline with dieting and attempts to control your body’s size. Write down as much detail as possible including, what diet, how often, the outcome, the outcome after 2 years, how your life was altered, thoughts and feelings about your body, and how you felt when the diet was over. I get it.⁠ ⁠ Youre not as active as night and will be heading to bed, so consuming carbs which will increase insulin, will lead to fat storage.⁠ ⁠ The problem with this viewpoint is that it doesnt take into consideration the most important variable when it comes to fat loss...⁠ ⁠ CALORIES.⁠ ⁠ You could eat all your calories and carbs at dinner if you wished and as long as your energy expenditure exceeded your intake, wed see fat loss.⁠ ⁠ Now could the timing of your carbs and meals INDIRECTLY affect fat loss by impacting performance and appetite regulation?⁠ ⁠ Yes.⁠ ⁠ But this still comes down to energy balance.⁠ ⁠ For the majority of people, who arent athletes, basing your meal and nutrient timing on what will personally help you regulate your intake is likely a smart idea.⁠ ⁠ Ironically, I find that a lot of clients often see better results by slightly backloading their calories and carbs to the evening when:⁠ ⁠ 1. I find that sharing it can be a powerful force for others too, a way of getting people to rethink some assumptions about their relationships that have hurt them or their friendships. For example, I use to think I “burdened” friends by being vulnerable when I was struggling until I read tons of studies that found that people like others more when they’re vulnerable, that vulnerability is linked to more enduring friendships and more intimacy. I try my best to share the research I learn on friends in the hopes that it can help other people as much as it has helped me. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find any examples of on Google of this having been done, although it surely has, even if seldom. I would highly recommend trying to write alliteration in meter as a one-off challenge. Not just for the gratification of being able to pull it off, but for the likely enhanced appreciation of words and their sounds in the aftermath. I dont know if Ill pursue it again, but Im glad that I did. When I first started working out, I didn’t value the basics enough and I didn’t value getting stronger. I’d hit some basic movement patterns, but I was never consistent enough with any of them to make any true progress. I didn’t actively pursue PRs or have any real performance goals. So my strength levels kind of just maintained. I thought I needed to switch things up all the time to create “muscle confusion” and out of fear of boredom with my workouts. Years later, I realize what was really boring was not making any progress & not living up to my potential. These days, my training is extremely repetitive, my focus is getting stronger in a variety of rep ranges with the basic movement patterns, and my goals are around strength & performance. My strength & physique took off when I made this change. As someone who always wants to be the hardest worker in the room, I believed that the more time I spent in the gym = the greater the result. So for years, I did 2 a day’s. Weight training in the morning, some basic cardio and ab work at night. I wanted to be lean, so I thought I had to do this. This was doing absolutely nothing for me besides making it harder to sleep at night, which made recovery between sessions worse, which led to no strength progression over time. I eventually gave up my second session each day and this is again when my strength & physique took off. There’s lots of fitness accounts here on IG. Go to your explore feed & you’ll see hot bods everywhere. For years, I’d look at other bodies and want so badly to look like them. I’d watch their workouts, wonder what they ate, and try to replicate it. I’d never feel good about my own body because I never looked like these people. It took years for me to realize it’s an unproductive goal & complete waste of my time to want to look like anyone else. Instead, the goal should be to be the best version of myself. When I started focusing on just being the best me, I became much more confident & happier in my own skin. Training and life suddenly became much more fun & fulfilling. @michelelovetri: Toddler breaks are now a thing in my house because at certain points there is just zero reasoning with them. Continually having to explain why it’s not ok to stick your toe in your brother’s butt or why it’s not ok to out of the blue shove your brother into a wall can be exhausting especially when you get to the defiance stage. We do the old school counting to three and typically at “2” Landyn knows it’s time to back off. But Logan!? He starts counting with us and mimicking us. Most of the time we are trying not to hysterically laugh and for a second I wonder if my mother had this problem as well. But we try and not overuse the word “no,” so instead we give them breaks and explain to them why what they have done either hurt someone else or is not kind. Truth be told there are so many times where I want to yell, where I want to scream and where I want to just throw my hands up and run, but at the end of it all we have a job to do. We feel our job as their parents is not to raise the kid that comes out with a 4.0, or is the All-American athlete (although all great things). We want to raise the kids that stand up and do the right thing, that have kind and giving hearts, that are inclusive and respectful of all, kids that will reach out their hand to help another even if it’s someone they don’t know, and kids that know the joy of success but can still persevere thru defeat. Raising them to be good humans is so tough and most of the time with toddlers you never know what you’re going to get which just makes this job that much more of a challenge but we do the best we can each day. I think they understand more than we give them credit for so I’m certain if we just stay on this road good things will come as a result. But it’s definitely not easy!!! This is where we 𝒹𝓇𝒶𝓌 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑒 between respecting your body and trying to constantly change it. In either scenario, weight loss can be achieved. However, only one scenario long-term food freedom is possible. While a clear distinction needs to be made, nutrition does not need to be so polarizing. You CAN combine a little bit of both. As a modern day dietitian I am a firm believer in combining both IE and other scientific principles to achieve weight loss. Therefore, I am not an ANTI weight loss dietitian, but rather ANTI restrictive diet. Further, IE is, and will always be, a privilege. Not everyone has access to all the food their body asks for, and not everyone can get to the place where their “intuition” guides them to eat. For those with a history of an eating disorder or when under severe stress, the primal intuition is to NOT EAT. In this case, combining meal planning, loose guidelines, and structure may be warranted. Additionally, for those who strongly believe weight loss will improve their health and well-being, it’s okay to focus on numbers and work towards a goal (as long as that’s not the only priority). One of the biggest misconceptions about intuitive eating is that you’re supposed to allow yourself to eat ANYTIME and for ANY REASON. On the contrary, Core intuitive eating principles encourage, and recognize the importance of, recognizing stress, emotional, or non-biologically driven eating. If you’re eating for any reason, including stress, boredom, loneliness or for procrastination, that’s not truly listening to your body. No matter what, find something that suits you, and work on that relationship with food! It’s always a work in progress for us all and the single most important thing you can do for yourself. Ayurvedic texts not only mention the theory of Circadian Rhythms, but have it down to such a fine art that no other scientific system has come close yet. In recent years, modern scientists have received awards and the Nobel prize for biomedically proving this theory, in its most basic understanding, correct. The thing is, however, there is so much more to life than what can be given a qualitative or quantitative measure, and as such, the modern system of research is not and can never be complete enough to reflect the intricacies of a human life. Ayurveda encompasses those intricacies and perfectly outlines their use with an immense amount of time-tested wisdom. When it comes to the time of day, three different energies cycle through in prominence- Vata (air/wind), Pitta (fire/sun), and Kapha (earth/moon). Between the hours of 2 and 6 am AND pm, the Vata energy is at its highest as felt through crisp, light, and airy conditions. Between the hours of 6 and 10 am/pm, the Kapha energy becomes most powerful with its calm, grounding, and nourishing qualities. Between the hours of 10 and 2 am/pm, the Pitta dosha is strongest with its fiery and transformative powers. When it comes to working out (a practice that tends to disturb our Vata and Pitta), it is MOST IDEAL to opt for doing it between the hours of 6am and 10am! Have you ever felt like if you just had more willpower, you could stop binging, lose weight, and FINALLY be the best version of yourself? What if I told you, your binges were not caused by a lack of willpower? Would you believe me? Or do you think Im absolutely insane for saying that? Its Sunday, youre starring at yourself in the mirror in disgust. You look at yourself and say, alright starting tomorrow Im getting my sh*t together. You spend all evening meal prepping all your healthy food, and promise yourself that this week will not end in a binge. Its Monday, youre feeling motivated and proud of yourself. Your coworker brings donuts to the office, and when offered one you gleefully answer Im okay, Im sticking to my meal plan this week. You feel empowered by your willpower and tell yourself this time will be different. But as Wednesday creeps up, your meal prepped chicken and rice doesnt sound as satisfying. You can hear the Burger King across the street calling your name. The inner dialogue begins Should I? Its so bad though. Im doing so good this week. But it sounds SO good. You finally cave and get it. You eat your burger and fries so quickly you dont even taste it. Then youre hit with an indescribable amount of guilt. Why cant I just stick to the meal plan?! I cant believe its only Wednesday and I already messed up. Filled with disappointment in yourself, as you head home you think, well I already messed up... and stop on your way home to get a pint of ice cream. You spend the night eating the entire pint, sick to your stomach and sobbing why do I keep doing this... Girlfriend, this does not have to be your life. We are told over and over again if you just have enough willpower you can lose weight and stop binging. Not only is weight influenced by much more than just what we eat, willpower is not even a part of the equation. You stop binging by making peace with food, eliminating food rules, fueling your body consistently throughout the day, dealing with your emotions and being kind to yourself.
