Neptune and Triton! 🔭🤩 Neptune hit opposition this week, and heres my latest image of the beautiful blue planet and its moon Triton. The skies were quite nice while I imaged this duo the other day, and luckily I caught this right before the fires went crazy and the skies clouded over. Heres a cool fact: Triton orbits Neptune backwards compared to the other bodies of our solar system. Most of the objects that orbit our star go in the same direction. And their moons also go in that same direction as well. However, there are exceptions, like Triton that go the other way. Orbits like this are suspected to have occurred when one body captures another as opposed to them coming into existence together. For this reason, it is suspected that Triton is an outsider to Neptune, and that the moon just got caught in Neptunes gravity as it passed by one day. Also, zoom in, and let me know your thoughts. Theres a tiny chance I pulled a little surface detail from the clouds, but Im guessing its just processing artifacts. I used this image in my larger solar system collage print recently too. We went out last night to see how magnified the stars and planets would be through the @swarovskioptik_outdoor @swarovskioptik_birding spotting scope. It blew our minds!!! Then we fitted the VPA (Variable Phone Adapter) on the scope and managed to get this photo of Jupiter ON MY CELL PHONE!! Algal Bloom Update: With the reoccurring algal blooms in Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries, the Indian River Lagoon and other areas of Florida, CCA Florida continues to stay engaged with local and state officials in regard to our state’s water quality issues. While many of these blooms are different algae species, the one thing they all have in common is they are being fueled by what we are doing on land. CCA Florida has been in contact with state and local officials, scientists, and stakeholders and will continue the dialogue and discussions indefinitely. The negative cumulative impacts from land require positive cumulative solutions from all of us. In order to help restore our waters back to health we must, 1. Reduce stormwater runoff 2. Increase the amount of stormwater remediation projects 3. Replace aging wastewater infrastructure 4. Reduce septic tank groundwater pollution 5. Reduce the nutrient pollution that mostly comes from fertilizers (nitrogen and phosphorus) 6. Reduce the land application of biosolids 7. Remove the muck from the known problematic areas 8. M2-9: Wings of a Butterfly Nebula Are stars better appreciated for their art after they die? Actually, stars usually create their most artistic displays as they die. In the case of low-mass stars like our Sun and M2-9 pictured here, the stars transform themselves from normal stars to white dwarfs by casting off their outer gaseous envelopes. The expended gas frequently forms an impressive display called a planetary nebula that fades gradually over thousands of years. M2-9, a butterfly planetary nebula 2100 light-years away shown in representative colors, has wings that tell a strange but incomplete tale. In the center, two stars orbit inside a gaseous disk 10 times the orbit of Pluto. The expelled envelope of the dying star breaks out from the disk creating the bipolar appearance. Much remains unknown about the physical processes that cause and shape planetary nebulae. Another Milky Way cycle has come to a close. Maybe next month the clouds will stay away. Tonight I headed up to the Midcoast region in Maine, to capture the Milky Way over a lighthouse or two. Stop number one was a dud, Marshall Point in Port Clyde. The clouds just never seemed to want to slide on out. Ok, it was worth the shot. As I was driving down Route 1 on my way here to Pemaquid, I was able to see the setting of the crescent moon, I was like all smiles now, maybe Pemaquid will actually be clear. So here it is...Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, with a slight fog and some clouds. The Skeleton Coast in Namibia stretches from Angola to the north down to South Africa in the south. The name is derived from the whale and seal bones that once littered the shore, along with the many skeletal remains of the shipwrecks caught by offshore rocks and fog. More than a thousand such vessels of various sizes litter the Skeleton coast. The Zella is one such shipwreck ….. The moon is about to slip under the horizon and is dwarfed by the size of Venus lighting up the night sky.
