Sam Shepard passed away 3 years ago today. I was rehearsing a play in Vermont when I got the news. My knees buckled. I had some harebrained idea that surely I’d work with him- as though I was the first kid to see myself in Fool For Love, or not understand how much I understood Cowboy Mouth. This is a photo from when I worked on A Lie of The Mind. In college they let you play 60 year olds when you’re 20😂Nothing human is foreign to me. Anyway, Sam Shepard’s words and stories move me in an inexplicably fantastic way. My mind is always moving fast, there is much to be anxious about in 2020. But great plays ground me and fuel me and remind me why I’m here at all. No, I never got to work with Sam, but that’s the beauty of a playwright, I guess. That parts of their minds are with us forever. That his prose and plays are here to move me til I drop. My heart aches for the theater and for all the magic-makers who are out of work. But I do have faith that there will be a right moment for a Shepard play again. We’ll need a sensitive lens through which we can access all of the humanity he poured out so that we could see ourselves and really see each other. Rip Sam Shepard.
