Smile! To say that Ive been feeling rather flat over the past few weeks is probably the best I would describe my outlook lately. In reality Ive been down ... feeling exhausted and despondent. I dont expect to be upbeat all the time ... thats not realistic but with little in the way of plans that can be made for the future (because of Covid), existence seems stagnant. These last few months have made me realise just how privileged I am living in a privileged western society, where I have a home, my family are healthy and theyre with me. We have food and work enough to pay the bills. I am truly blessed. These mountains were first known as Babad Doag (sitting toad) by the Tohono Oodham Native American people because of a ridge that looked oddly like a toads profile. 🐸 Today, you can spot a Sonoran Desert toad who is referred to as Babad. - Yellow Spotted Salamanders lay eggs in globs that grow to the size of softballs. Their eggs often host photosynthetic algae, which seem to benefit the developing salamander eggs while apparently stressing out the algae.
La maravillosa Lagartija esbelta (Lioaemus tenius) se encuentra en casi cualquier lugar de Chile central, tomando sol en una piedrita o en algún tronco. Con la luz de sol cambian de color de café grisáceo a verde tornasol. Pillarlas a mano es difícil porque son muy rápidas y habitualmente se les corta la colita en ese apuro. La colita vuelve a crecer eso si. Las lagartijas no hacen ruido, pero es bien normal escuchar un crujido de hojas cuando se mueven de un sitio a otro. Una vez capturé una lagartija y la tuve de mascota por una semana, pero no pude averiguar qué cosa comía, y se puso muy flaca. La tuve que devolver a su hogar, pero antes la llevé al colegio para dibujarla en una clase de Artes Plásticas. (saludos al tío Roberto que era el profesor y tuvo paciencia conmigo ese día). Today on our remote learning breaks, along with many, many worms, students found a chilly baby spotted salamander who warmed up quickly in our dirt-covered hands and became quite active! Later on when the air warmed up a bit, they took time to not just watch the busy bumble bees in our pollinator garden, but to pet them and let them rest on their sleeves, too! Here is a juvenile Spotted Salamander compared to an adult. As small as 3cm in length and weighing as little as 0.3g, the juveniles are small enough to fall prey to Pitcher Plants. After a good, cold rain they begin to emerge. Often times you may find salamanders attempting to cross the road at night when the temperatures are cool and the weather is wet. Redescubren a enigmática rana en desierto de Atacama luego de estar 80 años perdida para la ciencia 🐸🏜️ La rana de Hall (Telmatobius halli) no había sido reportada por la ciencia desde 1935, lo que le valió el título de “especie fantasma”. De hecho, en las ironías de la vida, los científicos describieron a alrededor de cinco especies del mismo grupo mientras la buscaban, pero nunca dieron con el paradero del misterioso anfibio que había sido encontrado cerca de una piscina que ocupaban los mineros para refrescarse. Luego de ocho décadas, investigadores la encontraron en un afloramiento de aguas termales en las cercanías de Ollagüe, en pleno desierto de Atacama, hallazgo que fue publicado hace poco en la revista científica #Zootaxa. Axolotl. Axolotl?? AXOLOTL!! These neotenic salamanders are classified as Critically Endangered in the wild. They were discovered in the canals outside of Mexico City, and pollution is driving them to extinction, BUT somewhere in the mountains of Montana, there are lakes that never dry up and that have no fish in them, so these salamanders never have to grow up. From Wikipedia Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. They are also perhaps the most-studied amphibian because they have incredible regenerative abilities. They can re-grow arms, legs, tails, eyes, and organs, including parts of their brains! The same lake youve seen in a few recent shots from is where I found these guys. I paddled out with my surfboard, goggles, and GoPro, and I saw dozens of these amazing creatures. If you want to learn more about these little wonders I highly recommend you look up the article in Scientific American called Biologys Beloved Amphibian--the Axolotl--Is Racing toward Extinction. I feel so lucky to have had a chance to swim with them. Many hands made light work at our salamander program this weekend at Upper and Lower Lakes Wildlife Area. We mostly found red-backed salamanders (pictured), but we found one blue-spotted (4th picture) and one spotted (not pictured) as well as some frogs and a garter snake. Growing over 13 inches in length, these voracious salamanders are often the top predator in many headwater streams in the Pacific Northwest and are known to feed on fish, invertebrates, and other amphibians. The Pacific giant salamander is one of over 300 salamander species found in North America, a continent that is home to more of these animals than anywhere else on earth. This important group of amphibians is now facing an extremely serious threat. A fungal pathogen known as Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, or “Bsal,” has caused massive die-offs of salamanders in many parts of Europe. Currently Bsal is not known to occur in the wild in North America, and biologists are vigilantly surveying for the disease and planning for its potential arrival. The consequences of Bsal invading North America would likely be severe and irreversible, as it is fatal to many species. In effort to highlight the importance of amphibians @freshwatersillustrated is working in collaboration with the @u.s.forestservice to celebrate and explore the unique lives of amphibians and bring to attention the impacts that threaten their existence. Happy October! I simply could not resist embarking on another month of animals. You guys voted for the order Urodela (“you’re-uh-deal-uh”) in my stories. This is the order of salamanders. To be honest at first glance I wasn’t sure this would be very exciting, but after reading more about salamanders I can’t WAIT to illustrate them and share them with you here. - The Solar Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) are one of the few species of animal to photosynthesize. Similar to the Leaf Slug (Elysia chlorotica), they get this ability from algae. Unlike the slugs, their algae is inside their cells and doesnt occur anywhere else in nature.
