VAGRANT written, directed, and produced by Caleb Ryan. Premiering September 30th at the @ciffcalgary festival. I had the great honour, and pleasure of being the Director of photography on this project. A labour of love, dedication, patience, and a great deal of learning. Being able to come together with a small collective of multi-faceted, and multi-talented individuals to create cinema has been a dream of mine since I was stocking popcorn bags, and cleaning movie theatres, and even before that taking my first steps in filmmaking with the mini dv cameras in high school. “Jikirag” had a lot of night exterior scenes, which we blocked extensively in the daylight since we only had five hours of usable darkness every night. Our stellar lighting and grip team pre-lit these scenes during the day so the moment it was dark enough to shoot, we hit record and let our actors have the floor. @alexanderjbaxter was generous to carry the hot flaming key light for most of this scene as the pair made their way through the eerie forest. Our helium balloon light, provided by @leveluplightingballoons, lit up the atmospheric fog and served as a natural moonlight while hidden HMIs shot cyan beams through the tops of the trees. A 12x12 book light matching the ambient moonlight and hidden LED fixtures did the rest of the work. Placing the lights high and far gave our camera operator @collin_morrison as much room as possible to make beautiful traveling shots without seeing stands or fixtures. Current forms of action against structural violence reveal massive fault lines in how modern and imperial histories are being remembered and mobilized. While statues celebrating slaveholders are torn down in one place, other places witness the uncanny reconstruction of imperial symbols and the corresponding political imaginary. This inevitable shift in perspective on the modern era—starting from the European Renaissance and early colonial capitalism—is the common ground of the projects presented in the exhibition Errata. Errata is a title borrowed from a larger project by the theorist and filmmaker Ariella Aïsha Azoulay. Her work focuses on the violence of imperial boundary making and suggests a hitherto underrecognized relationship between documented cultural artifacts and undocumented migrants. The part of the work presented at HKW is an archive of what she calls “Imperial Publications,” which refers to the entanglement of museum collections with extractive violence. Azoulay describes her work as an intervention into the imperial grammar of photographic archives and as a series of “rehearsals” in non-imperial modes of literacy, addressing the politics of restitution and repair. The video Never Settle by New Red Order (NRO) presents itself as a recruitment campaign for a public secret society, which simultaneously satirizes and sincerely engages with solidarity and the desire for Indigenous epistemologies.
