When I was in the 8th grade, I was at a friends house for dinner. As I got up to get seconds, her dad said, dont eat too much or you wont be able to run as fast next year. My freshman year of high school, after I won my first big race, the reporter interviewing me asked me how much I weighed before a single question about the race. These sorts of comments and suggestions continued throughout my high school and college careers. They were/are damaging to me, and I wish that people would consider the impact of their words before speaking, especially to young, impressionable athletes. My point isnt that we cant deal with the chastising, its that we shouldnt have to. Young (or any age) minds shouldnt be infiltrated with thoughts that their size is the reason for success or that their hunger cues cant be trusted. And a freshman girls weight definitely shouldnt be published in the paper. To people who feel the need to make these comments: please consider that words are remembered and can impact a person for years after they leave your lips. Perhaps make a positive comment about the race or training instead. To runners who deal with these comments: know that these people almost always have no authority to speak about weight/nutrition/body comp/performance. Try to tune them out or consult a medical professional, such as a sports RD, if you are concerned. It is 7 degrees, raining and windy. I have been up late last night watching water pour through by new kitchen ceiling. Even the dog looked forlorn when I suggested we go out this morning. Today is one of those days when I don’t ‘feel’ like running and it is a decision to just do it anyway. What helps on these type of days is the effort I have already gone to create routine and rhythms to my week. It is this that helps me stay on track. I had already made the time to get out and have been doing the same thing for some months now. I had my running kit out the night before and am wearing it before I make a coffee. I then trick myself and say l, ‘well I can walk if I want’, knowing that I will get out there and think ‘I might as well run now I am here.’ I am tired and it is ones of those runs where my legs feel like lead and my heart is heavy. I have a decision to make. Many of you have been asking how our first week of Nature School went, so I thought I’d share (clearly my kids think I’m bonkers ☝🏻 My oldest for sure). Like many of you, we started last week off not being able to venture outdoors much, due to the lingering wildfire smoke. That lead us to learn fire safety and all things related to trees. My fave! This week, since we were headed to the coast, we wanted to focus on marine life and an online Marine Biology course offered by Monterey Bay Aquarium (a big thanks, in part, to my cousin who works there, for the direction and course info). BUT, while walking along the river, we watched some salmon swimming up to spawn and decided to switch gears for yesterday’s lesson. The kids can now tell you all 7 stages of a salmon’s life cycle and were even bouncing with more questions about them. We explore and grow together. Learning about nature, tools and life skills knows no age boundaries, but we are adjusting some thing depending on each of the kids. Being able to adapt and change with the current happenings around us, is keeping us all on our toes...and being able to share my love of the outdoors with them is keeping me sane. On July 7th, I’m beginning a thru-hike of the entire Appalachian Trail, 2,193 miles from Georgia to Maine, in an attempt to set an endurance record, or FKT (fastest known time). Hiking the AT has been a dream in the making for a long time, and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to now realize that dream. My thru-hike will be supported by educator and hiker Warren Doyle, who set an endurance record on the trail in 1973 and has set an informal record for hiking the entire trail the most times (18). I will also be supported along the way by my family in Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well as friends I have met through the amazing hiking and trail running communities in the Eastern US. The women’s record stands at 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes by Jennifer Pharr Davis supported by Brew Davis, and the overall record stands at 41 days, 7 hours, and 39 minutes by Karel Sabbe supported by Joren Biebuyck. Their achievements, and those of Heather Anderson and Joe McConaughy (self-supported record holders), Scott Jurek, Karl Meltzer, Andrew Thompson, Pete Palmer, David Horton, and the list goes on, are not only feats of extraordinary athleticism, but a testament to the power of the mind, planning, strategy, the ability to roll with the punches, and above all… relentless forward motion. I would like to address that this thru-hike is happening in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. My crew and I are taking every measure to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading Covid-19 by getting tested, wearing masks as required indoors or when keeping a distance of 6ft isn’t possible, minimizing resupplies and arranging contactless delivery when possible, and providing our own shelters and avoiding places where hikers congregate. The entire trail from Georgia to Maine is open for use, though some restrictions for out-of-state visitors remain in the northern-most states; this may mean leaving the trail to get tested before entering certain states, contacting state health departments regarding this particular circumstance and following their guidance, and/or making some difficult decisions if the situation gets worse over the next month. The decision for a drug to go from a prescription to over-the-counter is usually made by the manufacturer of the brand drug who applies to the FDA to make the switch. The “Rx-to-OTC switch” path includes the following: 1) indications for OTC are similar to the prescription drug and must permit easy diagnosis and monitoring by the consumer; 2) the drug must have low toxicity and low potential for abuse; 3) the labeling must clearly have instructions for dosing and administration. OTC drugs save time if consumers can treat themselves and not have a doctor visit, and save money unless they cost more than the insurance plan co-pay for the brand. The major categories of drugs switched to OTC are: antihistamines, decongestants, antifungals, analgesics, acid reducers, and anti-pruritics. I remember sitting on a bus when I was a senior in high school. The cross country season had less than a week to go. We had just finished our last hard effort before our last race as a team. Our coach told us it would never be like this again. Not with this group. Not at this time. It would be something else… but not this. High School XC was over. I remember running at Penn Relays. This was one of my dreams. I got the baton and moved up through the pack. I got up on the shoulder of the leader with 300 meters to go. The crowd rose to their feet. And I gave them what they wanted… what I wanted… but not what the team needed. I shared the lead. I held the lead. And I lost the lead. I ran to the finish line defeated and walked away from it broken. Penn Relays was over. I remember my last race at North Carolina. I had run with this team for five years. But I had run with an injury for the last one. The gun went off to start the race. It went off again to start the last lap. I had the final straightaway to myself. I didn’t beat anyone that day. College was over. I remember being in the best shape of my life. I was running for Nike. I was strong. I was ready to break 4 in the mile. I was having a great practice. But with one interval left to go I broke… again. Pro running was over. Looking back, I can remember the hurt and the struggle. But I can remember the healing too. [ A brand new 🇸🇪 citizen! ] As of a few weeks, I’m officially a Swedish citizen! . I remember sharing a few bits and pieces of my family history once here before, but it was a long time ago. My maternal grandparents were Austrian Jews who fled Europe right before WW2 started and lived the rest of their lives in Albany, New York. My paternal great grandparents immigrated to America from Italy (hence our Italian sounding last name, Miracolo) and my two great grandfathers, Carmelo and Vito, made a grocery store in Harlem their livelihood. . My grandparents passed away before Sophia entered my life, but I can’t help but to think they would have been very happy and excited to know that I’m back in Europe. I’ve lived in Sweden for three years now, and have felt very at home and comfortable here since the beginning. The engineer in me loves that there’s a system and an order to everything, the sweet tooth in me loves all the pastries and the now father in me loves that there’s such a thing as paternal leave - to name a few things. I really do love this country with all my heart, and I’m a very humble immigrant - knowing how fortunate and privileged I am to have had the choice to move from one country to another, as opposed to having been forced. . 10 years ago, I certainly wouldn’t have thought I’d be living in the Swedish woods, foraging mushrooms, running ultras and growing my own veggies today. Or being a dual passport holder, for that matter! Life takes you unexpected places and that’s so freaking cool ✌🏼 . At the beginning of the year I set a goal to run a 50k trail race this summer. However due to Covid, the race I chose in 2 weeks was not possible so I had make an adjustment. Today I ran a 4.5 mile loop at Blue Hills Reservation and used my car parked along the trail as an aid station. The last 9 miles were rough, to the point where I was walking more than I was running due to my quads continuously cramping. I was able grind it out and finish all of the 31.1 miles. . . . In the last few years l have really gravitated towards fitness related activities that come with a known struggle. I really love the challenges that come with long endurance races because such as life, it is rarely a smooth ride. There will be spots where it’s tough and nothing goes right but as long as you keep moving forward you’ll get through it and end up where you want to be. . . . #50k #ultramarathon #embracethesuck - @kdick1nson on Instagram

Endlich haben wir wieder ein läuferisches Ziel vor Augen! Vor einigen Tagen haben wir erfahren, dass wir zu den glücklichen Läufer*innen gehören, die Losglück hatten und beim BaldeneySteig Ultratrail im November starten dürfen. Wenn wir es richtig in Erinnerung haben warten 54 km mit 1.200 Höhenmeter auf uns. Und wir freuen uns drauf! Gestern haben wir direkt mal eine Runde im wunderschön-herbstlichen Taunus gedreht, und mit diesem greifbaren Ziel war es so herrlich!
