This is not a post to get any sympathy what so ever or for anyone to feel bad for me, this post is to prove that I live by what I say, believe and to inspire. 5 weeks ago I injured my knee and I thought it would get better but yesterday tried to walk upstairs and I felt something snap and so went to hospital and now have to see a specialist to determine what surgery, I might need. Does that mean I won’t step on stage? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! This is something I have been working on and put my whole heart and soul into. The military taught me that the only thing that can stop you from achieving your goals is your last heart beat. Being in Law enforcement since the age of 18 and seeing and doing things that most people will never have to see or do showed me that fear is a load of bullshit.🙌 It’s really sucks yet there is no way that it will stop from getting my W. Since the death of my older brother I realized that this world is a crazy place to be but it’s all about your mindset, everyone that knows me knows I am the definition of crazy!!! Woke up this morning with another year passing. Well past a half century on this planet 🌎 and still navigating life’s journey. I consider myself a very fortunate person to live this life. I’ve skirted death several times along the way. And I’ve teetered on financial collapse a couple times. From multiple hospital stays and surgeries to filing for bankruptcy. I always knew I would come out a better person from these setbacks. I’ve gone from living with regrets to chalking them up to life lessons. If I can share a couple things with anyone who wants to listen. Establish relationships with people on your journey. I’ve never looked for a job in my life. I’ve had opportunities from relationships I’ve had over time. My very first job as a stock boy at 13 years old at our local market was because I always said hello to the owner. Back in September I got a call from @jennsantana at Men’s Journal to join writer @jessewill on a story that would follow a team of U.S. Border Patrol agents (affectionately known as “Tunnel Rats”), who intercept and remediate cartel tunnels that enter the U.S. from Mexico. Without hesitation I said “yes”, and then days later the thought of going 18 ft. underground into chiseled out rock that spanned 3 ft. wide by 4 ft. tall put me into a full blown panic attack I had never experienced before. Once we were underground I found myself in a completely different state of mind trying to make sense of everything going on and barely thinking of the confined space we were in. I was distracted and impressed by the rail system used to transport drugs, the remnants of crude lighting strung throughout (it was pitch black for us), and the airflow system using bounce house blowers you’d see at a kids birthday party. Looking back to remember where you have been is good from time to time. Not to regret but to recall the lessons learned and to be thankful for those that were there to help you up from your missteps. To say that I am blessed and privileged would be an understatement. I know that God loves me. He loves you too. My imperfections are the shining example of the need for love, humility, and diligence to seek growth. They remind me to show the love Jesus showed us, to others, regardless of their imperfections and missteps. This is a challenge, we all know this, as there are so many in need of a fist in the face and a boot in the arse. On that note, as an American, I am so very thankful to live in this moment in time of turmoil and chaos. After I returned home from Iraq, alone and newly divorced, I sat on the edge of a red paisley covered bed spread from Pottery Barn contemplating my future or plans to exit this world. To this day I hate paisleys. They remind me of when I almost gave up. . That night I realized I’d made it through two wars and buried friends. The person I loved the most had left me. Yet, I was still alive. Bullets and bombs hadn’t killed me, and neither had the trauma. If anything, I was more grizzled, seasoned, and adjusted to fight through obstacles. Plus, if I killed myself—after surviving several attacks by al Qaeda—I’d give them the win they wanted all along and be another veteran statistic. My ex would also find love again, and I’d be worm food. She’d move on when I couldn’t. I realized that if I kept living through the hardship, one day I’d be able to point to this time period as the defining moment that I grew stronger by facing my adverse situation. . In life, we often look to the future or current hardships as insurmountable. Yet, when we reflect at the moments when we’ve grown the most, it’s been through adversity. Ask any person about the toughest moment in their life, and they’ll likely tell you they’re stronger and wiser for having battled through. That’s because growth happens in a crucible, and like gold in fire, human beings are refined by adversity. There has to be a breaking down and regrowth for the new strength to emerge, just like exercising and muscle growth. So instead? I fight. I fight for my future and retain the warrior ethos the military taught me and carry it into life—never give up, never surrender, never accept defeat. The picture below also reminds me of that. I was tired, dirty, and spent a year in a desert getting shot at. But I never gave up or accepted defeat. When I got home is when I forgot who I was. This picture reminds me, though, who I still am. . I share this because today is #wspd. In the next week, youre going to see a partnership with @theveteransproject and hear from major veteran influencers. Approximately 2.5 years ago, he began having severe headaches, double vision, & severe spinal/back pain. He went to the East Orange VAMC & was given an X-ray (Feb. 2018). The providers stated everything looked fine & chronic back pain is common in veterans & sent Cpl. Duva home. After his symptoms continued, he went back & had a vision test where the opthamologist saw spots on his brain. He was then sent for an emergent MRI that took weeks to get. He was subsequently diagnosed with a pineal gland tumor on his brain, which subsequently affected his central nervous system, & caused him to go blind. The official diagnosis was germinoma (a rare pediatric brain cancer) in June 2018. After receiving chemotherapy & radiation, his cancer was gone per his providers. But it came back strong & he has fought ever since. Last Friday, September 11, he was placed in hospice & end-of-life care at home. He cannot see, eat, or drink & can barely speak- aside from telling his mother & fiancée at his bedside that he loves them. Over there on the @triarcsystems YouTube channel, we sat down and started discussing the basics of setting up the ultimate, shortest, “do all” rifle. ___ In multiple parts, we discuss barrel length, buffers, ammunition, furniture, glass, and various backup sighting systems. ___ I love this 10.5 sbr with the @unitytactical mounted T2, but the platform itself has some limitations that don’t make it the best all around base stick. 4 week countdown to the @thetacticalgamesskirmish Sarah had originally signed up for the next TTG Skirmish at @tradecraft_range but is still doing rehab so we last minute switched places and I’ll be competing. FITNESS: For the last 3-4 months I’ve been going through Ryan Fisch’s bodybuilding programs so in order to get better prepared for the Skirmish I’m still doing his high intensity bodybuilding program but I’m making specific adjustments like switching out rowing for sprints, using dumbbells over a barbell, etc. FIREARMS: Sarah and I just had a private pistol session last weekend and I came home with 3 things I can work on daily through dry fire training. We don’t have a lot of spare ammo right now so beyond zeroing our new Rifle I’m honestly just going to hammer out this pistol homework through dry fire and the Skirmish will be my opportunity to see whether or not those skills improved. What is a Skirmish? Tactical Games Skirmishes are one day events that consist of 3 total battles. Why do I ruck? (This morning was a short, moderately hard push; 3 miles at a 13:09 pace, with 45-50 lbs. I always use an old school ALICE pack and this morning I opted for my @salomon Speed Cross 3 trail runners in lieu of my usual @salomon Falcons.) ➖ The answer for a lot of us in the military is simple, we have to. Whether to meet annual requirements or maintain combat readiness, rucking is a staple PT event for soldiers, but one with a number of really compelling health benefits as well. ➖ For me, the number one reason I prefer rucking (over running, especially) is the lower incidence of injury and lessened impact on the knees. I know, I know, at first this seems pretty counter-intuitive, but taking into consideration speed, foot strike, peak knee load, etc. science supports the notion that rucking is a much healthier form of cardio (specific to knee health) than running, over the course of your career. ➖ Rucking is also a form of Active Resistance Training, providing not only a cardio focused workout, but helping to strengthen muscle groups throughout the body, burn fat and speed up your metabolism.
