The Dirt Band Family suffered a great loss this week with the passing of our former manager and record producer William E. “Bill” McEuen. (Shown here during the “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” sessions with Randy and Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Mother Maybelle Carter, and NGDB members Jimmy Ibbotson and Jeff Hanna). 📸John McEuen If you’re a fan of the “Circle” record, you owe Bill a big “thank you”. It was his concept and he did a masterful job of producing the project , as well as co-designing the album package, which also included his wonderful photographs. In addition to producing several of our best records, Bill also produced Steve Martin’s hugely successful comedy albums. He would go on to produce several of Steve’s films as well. His management clients included The Hourglass(with Duane and Gregg Allman), The Sunshine Company, Louisiana’s LeRoux, Starwood(with future NGDB member Bob Carpenter), and comedians Steven Wright and Robert Schimmel. Our band had a great run with Bill, and will forever be grateful for his friendship and his genius. Our hearts go out to Bill’s wife Alice, his brother John McEuen and the entire McEuen family. The character from my film Remember to Forget, goes through his memories in an attempt to forget the one he loved. I remember visualizing it in my head, seeing him mashing each key on the typewriter, while he floats effortlessly through each of his memories... When we got to set I explained my vision to my crew. And later, when I returned, found a full-sized desk ratchet-strapped to a Fischer dolly. Typewriter. Desk Lamp. Whiskey. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 is that while I manifested this scene into reality, I also manifested things I didnt want... Casting my real life love interest at the time - 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 - as the lead actress was a bad idea. In a smoke machine daze, I manifested my first panic attack and lashed out on my actor in a fit of jealous paranoia. The experience was all too surreal. And while I look back on the finished work with pride and some regret, I cant help but be proud of how far I have come. Witnessing my mind and focusing on what 𝘐 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵, has made all the difference. 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲? Yet another reason to shoot RAW instead of JPEG. I made this image of myself before a 2017 @bonjovi show at @thegarden on the old @canonusa 1Dx (version 1!) with my 8-15mm fisheye mounted behind Tico Torres’ drum kit. Exposure was preset for the show lighting (5000 ISO, 1/320, f/4) so it was severely underexposed as I just grabbed a quick test shot to make sure it was firing. RAW processing software keeps getting better, so I used @phaseonephoto Capture One 20 to re-work the frame and it looks much better than it did at the time. Swipe to see the original image straight out of camera, my remote setup during sound check, and then Tico during the show. As always, @pocketwizard and @manfrottoimaginemore help make this shot possible, with a huge extra thanks to drum tech @johndouglas_art for cobbling together some extra hardware to keep my gear rock steady during the show. A moment in history we’ll never forget 🙌🏼 20 years ago today, we showcased our audio production to the world at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony. Events don’t come much bigger than this! Norwest took the event to a new level, setting benchmarks for international sporting ceremonies audio production. Not bad work from a guy who had only set the company up a few years’ prior as a one-man-band 💪🏼🔊 It was a BIG night and many big things happened after that. We also went on to deliver the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for Athens 2004, Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
