Todays #ObscureOrdinance is from 1922 and banned all forms of Jazz Dancing in the City of Savannah. While on the surface, this law seems aimed at protecting the morality of Savannahs citizens by not allowing them to witness or engage in activities that were deemed overtly promiscuous, a claim which is backed up by its inclusion in the City Code chapter titled Offences against Decency and Morality, the law is also closely tied to Prohibition and deeply racialized prejudices against jazz. Though its origins are much earlier, jazz culture began to emerge in the early 20th century with audiences and performers who were by-and-large Black. As a result, it quickly gained a reputation as the devils music because it was derived from African musical traditions and was believed to incite sexual activity in listeners with its electric rhythms. By the 1920s, jazz was increasingly popular with Black and white audiences who would enjoy performances in nightclubs and dancehalls together, a rare instance of integration in the Jim Crow era. Under the guise of protecting morality, laws just like this one were often put in place to police entertainment venues where alcohol was typically served to uphold federal prohibition laws. However, they sent more subliminal messaging about controlling Black bodies and the intermixing of races. Eventually, as jazzs popularity moved beyond nightclubs and onto the radio, its status evolved to that of an art form, and laws regulating its performance and enjoyment gradually disappeared. By 1945, this ordinance banning jazz dancing was no longer in effect in Savannah. A rather maniacal take on hope, inspired by Emily Brontes poem on the same. I tried to juxtapose very contrasting poetic moods in the two parts of the poem, to play with the idea of liminal spaces and how hope fits into that. I heard this quote from an speaker at #CHOP a couple weeks ago and it stuck out to me as one of the most concise and urgent explanations of why white silence is violence. ⁣ ⁣ In my conversations with friends/family/members of my communities, a couple frequent remarks are “I can’t support the protests because of the looting” or “Can’t this be done in a more civil way?”. While I did not agree with these comments at this time, it wasn’t until hearing this quote that I realized how dangerous this sort of normalcy-preserving hesitation is. It sneakily threatens to halt the momentum of radical efforts through the guise of “protocol” or “civility”, when our goals require a complete reset of the status quo. ⁣ ⁣ Please continue to have conversations with members of your communities who do not share your beliefs. 2020 was a reset for a lot people and I hope everyone was able to receive a positive outcome despite of all the chaos going on in the world. - Told my son I dated a girl in high school based solely on her Princess Leia Halloween costume. He didnt believe me till I produced the 1977 yearbook. He also thought I made up her last name- Huckleberry.

I hate to break the news, but there is no quick way, quick fix, quick anything that will get you booked up and busy over night. It’s just doesn’t happen, not in this industry. . . There is a misconception of coming out of school and being a fully booked stylist in two seconds flat. And this leads to many stylists starting out in this business, not seeing the results they THINK they should. So guess what? They leave the industry. Or They start working two jobs because they have to supplement their income. And then they get frustrated because they paid a mint for school and they now have to work a second job... We can’t have this anymore! . . Let me give you the real real! Now every stylist grows at a different rate but on average it can take at LEAST 2-3 YEARS behind the chair to build a solid book on clients. This is also by staying in the same salon. And all along the way you are just grinding it out. We have all been there as new artists, including me. . . Here are some tips to help you stay on track! . 1. Be consistent in the way you grow your business. If it’s insta you focus on. Be sure you know your target client and consistently share content that is geared toward them. . 2. Find a mentor and watch what they do. Become a sponge and soak in all the goodness. Education and more education! If you need one I got you. . 3. Put in the extra work. Stay late. Come in early. Say yes to free opportunities like photo shoots. . 4. Believe In yourself. Believe in your talent. And don’t ever give up in your dreams. The timeline may be a little different than you thought. But be flexible. As long as you see forward progress you are good to go! . 5. Last but not least.... Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. When lockdown was first started in India, there was a ban on selling alcohol as well, following which a rise in domestic abuse cases was reported. Alcoholics take out their withdrawal angst on their wives and children.
