I recently had a hard conversation with someone I am close with. During the initial exchange there were a series of miscommunications. At the close of the conversation I felt attacked, like I was walking in egg shells, like my perspective was inferior, and like I was being judged...not a great feeling. In the past when these kinds of feelings came up, I would shut down. It would go a little something like this: tunnel vision, spirally feeling, wouldn’t consciously know I was being triggered, feeling angry but words would escape me, and unable to think clearly to share how I’m feeling. But not during this exchange. And this is progress. I had a little voice that was saying “I think what they are upset about has nothing to do with you”. I was able to observe that I was being triggered. Ultimately, I was able to speak up and share how I was feeling during the interaction. Historically I have felt terrified to leave any argument “unfinished”, driven by fear that something “bad” would happen if a conclusion was not reached. Driven by codependency, I could not feel okay unless the other person felt okay. This time we were able to agree to table the conversation. Which allowed me a few days to sit and think about how this interaction made me feel & gather my thoughts. When we circled back, I was able to ask if we could talk about our exchange from the other day. I was able to hold space and listen to their experience, gain understanding of where they were coming from. And most importantly, I was able to effectively communicate where I was coming from and be heard. I feel proud of this progress. It was hard, but it allowed me to see how I can show up for myself. I have tools now. This has been what most of my training has looked like for a while now. Races started to get canceled, and I became complacent and lazy. I let the little things start to slip away, just slightly, but enough to toss me into a spiraling injury. I have no one to blame but myself. There were some very low points for me in this process. I’ve had a relatively healthy career, and haven’t ever had to take much time off from running. I pouted, I worried about paying for treatments, I was angry. But then I had a moment of realization: “Shut up and do your job, Aaron.” I didn’t pick up my life and move across the country to commit halfway to running. I did it because I love to run and I love to compete. I realized this is part of my journey, and I can’t allow my emotions and struggles to effect those around me. I looked to guys like @joeyberriatua and @drewhunter00 who went through the ringer but never allowed their struggles negatively effect their teammates. After these realizations I found the beauty in the struggle. Ticking off the boxes and taking care of the little things started to be fun. I’m beginning to feel like I’m actually chasing something again. In hindsight, this may have been exactly what I needed. I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I need in place to stay driven even when struggling. I’ve learned about deficiencies in my body. I’ve learned things about my training that will put me in a better place than I was before I was injured. I’ve learned that it’s okay to struggle and I’ve learned, through that struggle, exactly how important this sport is to me. I’m on the upswing. רציתי לספר לכם משהו שאתם לא יודעים, כשהייתי בת 8 שיחקתי בפעם הראשונה על הבמה ,שם ידעתי שאני רוצה להיות שחקנית. זה מה שאעשה כשאהיה גדולה. ידעתי שהדבר שנותן לי את הסיפוק הכי גדול זה לגרום לאנשים ״להרגיש״. ידעתי שיום אחד אעבור לארצות הברית אלמד שם ואתחיל את הדרך שלי. כשהשנים חלפו לא היה לי את האומץ. אבל תמיד זכרתי את עצמי שם על הבמה אי שם בגיל 8 מחכה להזדמנות. לפני כשנה וחצי אזרתי את האומץ. התקבלתי ללימודי משחק בלוס אנג׳לס! אחד הדברים המרגשים שקרו לי בחיים. שנייה אחרי כל ההתרגשות הגיעה עצבות גדולה כי הבנתי כמה החלום הזה על גבול הבלתי אפשרי. כמעט כל האנשים שהקיפו אותי ניסו להוריד אותי מזה, בודדים שתמכו. החלטתי ללכת על זה בכל הכוח. שכנעתי את כל הסביבה שלי שזה הדבר הנכון לעשות ונלחמתי בכל מי שנסה לערער אותי בדרך. נרשמתי ללימודים של שנה וחצי אחרי! שנה וחצי שבה ידעתי שכל מה שאני הולכת לעשות בה יהיה לשפר את עצמי לקראת הטיסה מכל בחינה. נאלצתי לעזוב את ״בית צבי״. עבדתי בשתי עבודות יום ולילה,לקחתי שיעורי פיתוח קול, שיעורי מבטא באנגלית, התאמנתי חזק בחדר כושר אפילו עשיתי יישור שיניים. הכל כדי להגיע לשם במיטבי , לא אתן לכלום לעמוד בפניי. כל זה שמרתי בסוד.עד עכשיו. היום, הייתי אמורה לטוס לשם ולהתחיל להגשים את החלום ,כל העבודה הקשה שלי הייתה אמורה לממש את עצמה היום. היום זה היום שלו חיכיתי מגיל 8. היום היה אמור להיות קתרזיס עבורי. אבל היום קמתי בבוקר והבנתי שכל מה שחלמתי עליו מאז היותי ילדה קטנה כנראה לא יקרה בזמן הקרוב. היום קמתי לבוקר של כלום. בוקר שבו אני לא יודעת לאן פניי מועדות. אני אפילו לא מצליחה להתחיל להבין איך אני אמורה להתחיל לאסוף את עצמי. איך מגבשים תכנית חדשה ומה עושים עכשיו. אני עומדת בפניי הצומת הגדולה ביותר שעמדתי בפניה בחיים שלי. ואין לי מושג לאיזו דרך לפנות. משהו בי מסרב בכל תוקף להאמין שזה לא יקרה ושפספסתי את ההזדמנות שלי. שהכל היה לחינם. יש בי כל כך הרבה כעס וכאב ואין את מי להאשים. חשבתי לעצמי שאולי אני צריכה לשנות כיוון? הרי אף פעם זה לא זמן טוב להיות שחקן והקורונה עוד יותר הקצינה כמה המקצוע הזה נדחק לפינה. חשבתי לעצמי שאולי אני צריכה ללמוד תואר? בטח ההורים שלי יהיו מרוצים סוף סוף. אבל לא. יש בי אש שאי אפשר לכבות ויגיע היום , אולי זה לא יהיה מחר או מחרתיים וכנראה גם לא בכמה חודשים הקרובים , שבו אטוס. ואז אין לי שמץ של ספק שהכל ישתלם. ובנתיים, אצפה לי בקלטת שלי מפעם, מגיל 8 על הבמה, ואזכיר לעצמי כל יום שיום אחד זה יקרה ,כמו שחלמתי. - @adibenezra1 on Instagram

When I got hired at @footlocker the Compton Community Door was the main objective. Since then, it was postponed, I had a baby, COVID hit, virtual school started. Needless to say, tackling this had me SHOOK. Last week was full of adult responsibilities and tested me as a mother, employee, and partner. I felt guilty choosing one over the other. 💆🏻♀️ Thank you to EVERYONE who had their hands in this; none of this could’ve have happened without the store team, their leadership team, the Foot Locker marketing + PR team back in NYC, the brands who showed up and partnered up, and the local community vendors that rose to the challenge of giving back to 1000+ people. We did as much as we could with what COVID safety regulations dealt us. We promise to keep our promise to create a safe space to engage and interact with. Today my sweet boy was so excited to show me his schoolwork (scroll to the 2nd picture). I totally cried. I’m so worried all the time if I’m being a good step mom or not. Being a step mom is probably the hardest but most rewarding thing I’ve ever experienced. My biggest fear is to be an “evil step mom”. Landon has more love inside of him than anyone I have ever met.
