Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! They grow from roughly 10 kg (22 pounds) at birth to as much as 40 kg (88 pounds) just 12 days later, when fully weaned. Thanks to their mothers’ especially fat milk, they can gain more than 2 kg (4.5 pounds) a day! La escorrentía de las plantaciones bananeras, la agricultura en expansión y las lanchas rápidas, aún más irónicamente, para el ecoturismo, siguen amenazando su existencia. Su antiguo pariente, la vaca marina de Steller de 10 toneladas, fue cazada hasta la extinción en 1768, solo 27 años después de su descubrimiento. Mr Tumnus was rescued in West Sussex around 5 weeks ago, he had a nasty open wound of unknown origin, possibly a bite from another seal. Initially looked after by AlphaPet Veterinary Clinic in Bognor Regis, and then moved on to @rspca_mallydams_wood for ongoing treatment. Here’s some of our latest findings thanks to our Pinniped Monitoring Program and the amazing volunteers that collect this data! During August 2020, we found 98% of harassment occurred in less than or equal to 10ft. from a sea lion. Of that 98%, 78.5% of harassment occurred in less than or equal to 5ft from a sea lion. Our findings suggest people need to have a minimum distance of 10ft between you and sea lions when quietly observing them. We recommend 15-20ft to truly minimize our impact on them. Remember, these findings are just from the month of August, so data is likely to change. We additionally found 49% of the sea lions that charged or barked at a human for approaching them too close for their liking, were adult/subadult females (see next photo), while 19% were pups. This high response from females is expected, as they tend to be more territorial for their space and the fact that they have pups of only a few months old to protect. ____ It’s important to note that these aggressive behaviors of barking and charging towards people, again occurred in close proximities. So observe quietly from 15 ft away to watch their natural behavior at play 🥰. Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

They rest, breed and play in inshore waters and venture offshore to our #AustralianMarineParks to feed.⠀ ⠀ @ParksAustralia works alongside @nationalparkssa to understand and protect this charismatic species, including supporting collaborative marine park research.⠀ ⠀ Each breeding season, #drones are used to photograph isolated colonies at the base of #bundacliffs and #nuytsarchipelago. Analysed using state-of-the-art software, this monitoring work helps us estimate population trends. The Australian Sea Lions have very distinct characteristics between the males and females. The males are dark brown with a light yellow mane around their heads. The females are more silver in color and don’t have any mane around their heads. The males are usually almost 3x the size of the females. - @australiansealions on Instagram
NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June.
