Before beginning my journey toward the Black Female Divine, it felt impossible to imagine the existence of a truly nurturing society, one that especially nurtured Black women. But as I have learned about divine Mothering, I have discovered that need is a cornerstone of mothering. No matter how exhausted they are and regardless of whether they are biologically-related to the child or not, a child’s cry often acts like a bat signal that sends parents running to aid. So, it’s no surprise that anthropologists who study modern matriarchal cultures, such as the Khasi of northeastern India and the Mosuo of southwestern China, have found that they are distinctly need-based. In other words, the society is organized around trying to meet everyone’s needs. As scholar Heide Goettner-Abendroth is quick to point out, matriarchal societies aren’t simply the reversal of patriarchal societies, with women ruling over men. Rather, they are need-based societies that are centered around the values of care-taking, nurturing, and responding to the collective needs of the community. In matriarchal cultures everyone, regardless of your gender or whether you have any biological kids – is taught to practice the societal values of care-taking, nurturing, and responding to the collective needs of the community. Its #pcosawarenessmonth Its time to educate. Many patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are given their diagnosis and told they may never be able to have children. This isnt true for everyone. The main issue that women may face with PCOS is lack of ovulation or irregular ovulation. There are various treatments that patients can seek out in order to have a baby of their own. Sometimes it involves taking medication. Other times it may involve more invasive measures such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). It may also benefit to be under the care of a Reproductive Endocrinologist. In addition, just because you have PCOS, it doesnt mean you cant get pregnant naturally on your own. Every patient experiences PCOS differently. Explore the options that work for you. =============== My experience: we needed help to get pregnant with my first two children. It took years of trying on our own, then with fertility treatments. It was emotionally difficult at times. The medications can be taxing. The procedures can be invasive. The process can be stressful. Theres a lot of bloodwork involved (for which my veins may never forgive me), internal sonograms, failed ovulation tests, and failed pregnancy tests.... but THEN theres the ONE POSITIVE test that changes your entire world that makes the entire process worth it. We needed a fertility expert to help us with our first two pregnancies. Our third - well, thats where PCOS threw us for a loop. I managed to get my PCOS under control for one year through diet and exercise and that resulted in our third pregnancy. “My body can do this” I feel like this has been my mantra for the past months. Going through so much loss with IVF is hard. We lost 7 embryos including one miscarriage and finally, on our last transfer, we were successful. But how can I trust my body? I feel like it’s failed me so many times that at this point I just walk into appointments assuming things arent going to be where they should be. . No one told me I would feel this way. No one told me that I would feel so scared and have so much anxiety after becoming pregnant again. I thought once I had a positive test that would be it, we would be safe, but these feelings of anxiety and worry havent gone away. And in fact, they are more present now that we are weeks into this pregnancy. . During IVF I was so closely monitored. I went into the clinic every week, sometimes two or three times a week. And now, I’m supposed to just trust that things are going well? For three years I was monitored, I had countless blood draws and I was always told how things were going on a weekly basis. But when you’re pregnant all that seems to go out the window. . But I suppose that’s how this part of the process works. I graduate from the IVF clinic and then I’m supposed to trust and assume things are going ok. Let me start my day by telling you how amazing God is. Today marks the 7th year to the day, of this picture on the left. I spent all of last night remembering what it felt like to be in this moment. In this picture, I was just coming out of my second major surgery in a year. I had stage 3 Endometrial Cancer and I’d just found out, that I had stage 1 Colon Cancer. This particular surgery was to remove 30% of my colon. Even during that, I wasn’t afraid. I always felt God with me, and I heard him tell me not to worry, bc I would be fine and to trust him. So that, my family, and some close friends, are what got me through. I wouldn’t be this person on the right without acknowledging that today. So, no matter what your day looks like, just know that you WILL get through it. I’ve been in since April 2nd, but still have a month to go before the drs would induce me (at 34 weeks). And because of COVID I’m not allowed any visitors, including Luke and the boys. Feels like a double quarantine in here. 🙈😅 BUT, we’re very thankful that baby girl looks so healthy! 🤍All her vital signs and ultra sounds look great, and she’s moving a ton. I’m thankful for incredible doctors and nurses. I’m also thankful for the best friends and family on the planet. 💛 Pray all those good health reports continue for her and I! Even after birth, she’ll be a NICU baby for a bit. Pray for Luke and my Mom managing the boys. And peace for all of us in the process. Honestly, the toughest part so far for me has been missing my boys. Little lady, I love you. It pains me so much to write this. ⠀⠀ We were so hopeful. We were so optimistic. We had such a “good” feeling about this working. We saw “signs” along the way. Things were supposed to go right for us this time around. But they didn’t...again. ⠀⠀ Kevin and I found out Thursday that our transfer didn’t work. We listened to the voicemail together when he got home from work. When I finally got up enough courage to press play, I could instantly tell by the tone in my doctor’s voice that it wasn’t good. ⠀⠀ And it wasn’t. Our miracle embryo found his home in Heaven instead of my womb. “Not pregnant” were the only words I heard. We were (and still are) absolutely devastated. ⠀⠀ We sat on the couch, speechless, with tears rolling down our face. Kevin didn’t have much time to take everything in, his virtual open house for school was starting shortly. ⠀⠀ Listening to your husband welcome kids to his class after he just found out that he won’t be having a kid of his own is one of the most heart-wrenching things to experience. I know how badly he wants to be a father and it hurts me so much that I can’t make him one. ⠀⠀ We don’t know where we go from here, but we want to thank you all again for your continued support. Today at 4:30 a.m. - i held my moms hand as she took her last breaths just as i promised i would and she got her angel wings. ❤️ She left us peacefully while listening to Elvis - Crying in the Chapel & the Commodores Easy Like Sunday Morning. ❤️ Although my sister and I are heartbroken - we know we made the right decision in letting our Mom go because she was too much of a strong woman, a rockstar and a no Bullshit kind of a broad (yes that’s where i get it from - if you were wondering) to be living her life on life support and feeding tubes. ❤️ And we find such comfort and peace knowing she is NOW reunited with my dad - the love of her life for 56 years before his passing 8 years ago. ❤️ We are so overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we’ve received during this time.
