Today is truly a historic day for DWC and the more than 21,000 women who are experiencing homelessness in L.A. County. Just a few minutes ago, the @CountyofLA Board of Supervisors voted to designate unaccompanied women as a recognized homeless subpopulation in the County.⠀ ⠀ We are so inspired by the leadership of Supervisor @HildaSolis in introducing this motion, and humbled by the support of the more than 200 individuals who helped ensure its approval by emailing or Tweeting at their Supervisor. Every time I teach, I get asked about dew points — it is the source of so much anxiety among designers. It’s also THE most confusing way of understanding vapor control. It drives me absolutely crazy to hear people talk about “moving” the dew point. It doesn’t help that nine times out of ten they’re wrong (partially or completely). And of course they’re wrong! They’ve picked the most needlessly complicated way of understanding an already difficult concept. * In any case, I hope this helps. We’re obviously a bit limited in what we can cover here on Instagram, but this should give you a good solid place to start. If you have time, might I suggest you also take a look at my post on “The Perfect Wall” from May 23. It’s about 5 rows down and it elaborates on some of the key concepts here. * Finally, please know that this topic is very difficult for pretty much everyone, myself included. If you’re struggling, it’s because this is hard, not because you’re missing something obvious and easy that everyone but you can see. But take heart, you CAN learn this! We all know fight or flight, but another extremely common reaction is freezing, which feels like a temporary paralysis. A 2017 study in Sweden, for example, found that of 298 rape survivors, 70% had experienced tonic immobility - a state of involuntary, temporary motor inhibition - during their assault. TGIF! Lets celebrate with my fave topic in the world - cervical fluid! Here are my top 5 tips for optimizing your cervical fluid for full sperm superhighway status.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, before we get started, YES hormones (particularly estrogen) are the most important contributors to adequate cervical fluid. Were gonna check those out (see yesterdays post about labs). But sometimes we still need a little extra boost, so here are the deets:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Hydration! I know it seems like that’s the answer to everything. But check this out: cervical fluid is 95-98% water. Drink up!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Botanicals: There are several herbs that can be used to encourage cervical fluid. Shatavari is prob my favorite...I was recommending it for libido and my patients started telling me UM SOMETHING ELSE IS HAPPENING 😉 3️⃣ Fatty acids: Essential fatty acids are often used to increased cervical fluid, particularly that coveted “egg white cervical mucus.” Fish oils with lots of omega 3s are great. Similarly, evening primrose oil is a rich source of gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. When used in the follicular phase of the cycle (day 1 of your period until the day you ovulate), it may increase lubrication and mucus production.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a lovely way to increase pelvic blood flow (in addition to so many other benefits), encouraging healthy fluid secretion. Yoga and abdominal massage are also great ways to get blood flowing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5️⃣ N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is THE BEST. This supplement acts as a mucolytic meaning it thins secretions. [Content warning: non-consensual sexual scenarios] New survey results! AWARE and @ngeeannpoly surveyed 539 youths in Singapore, ranging in age from 17 to 25 years, on their understanding of consent. We were pleased that the majority of youths understood when consent had not been given over a range of hypothetical scenarios, including when consent was withdrawn halfway through an act, or when consent was given under a state of intoxication or under threat. However, some were less sure when it came to situations involving a) underage sex and b) a reluctant partner being coerced or urged to say yes. Men were also more likely than women to identify some scenarios as consensual. When it came to the respondents own real-life experiences, though, things were not so straightforward. Of those who had engaged in some form of sexual activity (16%), around one in three reported feeling awkward about asking for consent. Only slightly more than half had discussed consent with their (most recent) partner before engaging in sexual activities. We need sustained engagement on multiple levels - including school programmes - to construct a stronger consent culture in Singapore. - @awaresingapore on Instagram

J is for Joven - pronounced “yoven” coz it’s Spanish hey. Although the word is Spanish, Joven does sound like the third kid from the Hansel and Gretel family who couldn’t go wandering through the forest with his siblings because the name Joven in fact translates to “Troy” in German. And, the only reason anyone called Troy would miss out on being eaten by a witch is because he had a terrible BMX accident where he de gloved his own scrotum, preventing him from any walking at all! As for Joven, in wine terms, it refers to the Spanish translation of “young” meaning the wine is youthful, not benefitting from ageing as such, and often provides for a brighter, fresher style of drinking designed to be consumed shortly after production. In Spanish wine laws Joven is also not subject to any minimum ageing in barrel or bottle restrictions prior to release unlike Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Joven wines may also have a portion of Carbonic Maceration, which again sounds like a Troy style of “pantsident”, but is not. What I love about Vanessa and her business, is the courage she had to take action despite any fear she may have had. A lot of new entrepreneurs spend time creating a brand and figuring out their why. While unfortunate, Vanessa’s business was born out of a need within the community. Back in 2018, two Black men were arrested at a Starbucks in Pennsylvania for not purchasing anything while waiting on a colleague. It was from that point forward, she realized she could no longer support a company that didn’t support folks that looked like her. It’s also important to be outward focused and be a servant leader in business. Vanessa works hard every day, not just for herself, but to build generational wealth. Did you know that you’re born with an innate toxin bucket? Well that’s what I say to my patients & clients to explain how disease works. 90% of chronic disease is caused by environment & lifestyle exposures. Of course we each have a unique set of genes & mutations or susceptibilities, as well as our own unique lives, exposures, traumas & a soup of bioindividual pathogens to top it all off. These lifestyle exposures, stressors, & habits influence our genes’ expression & ultimately play the biggest role in influencing what phenotype (physical attributes) is displayed. In other words, genotype, influenced by nature, gives us the visible phenotype. Or form follows function. . 🔹 Even babies born with cancer had to have a genetic mutation passed down from a relative {changed due to an exposure} or an exposure in utero that lead to the gene mutation. What this means are there are only a handful of reasons that people get labeled or diagnosed with a myriad of conditions. The reasons people get chronically ill are: 1. Pathogens-we’ve all got them-parasites, mold, etc 2. Heavy metals 3. Corporate toxins:pesticides, plastics, petroleum 4. Emotional trauma/stress. ALL LEAD TO MITOCHONDRIAL DAMAGE . 🔹 Even hormonal imbalances are a sequela of one of the above. Hormones are messengers-they aren’t a root cause. . 🔹 The good news is that gene expression can & is changed all the time through better lifestyle choices, mindset improvements, dietary changes (nutrigenomics), & avoidance of toxic exposures. You can reverse chronic disease. I hate to say it but diet usually is NOT ENOUGH. Don’t mistake the value of a training session with how much word salad you vomit all over your client. . Was so nice to get to work with these kids remotely over lockdown, their ideas for sustainable communities were brilliant, and they made heaps of art in their home school setups - Instant morale boost every time I saw their Zoom faces and drawings! This is an introduction to color to help explain the tools we use for shade matching in dentistry. Lets start with the definition of visible light – which is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths perceptible to the eye. This light can stimulate rods/cones located in the eye to send nerve impulses to our brain where they are interpreted as color. The 3 cones in our eyes our sensitive to short wavelengths (blue cones), medium wavelengths (green cones) or long wavelengths (red cones). Light of different wavelengths will stimulate the different cones to send nerve impulses to our brain. The way the nerve impulses are interpreted is described by a process known as the opponent process (color) theory. This theory states that color vision occurs by seeing differences in the opposing color pairs (blue/yellow, red/green, white/black). We see yellow by stimulation of red/green and an absence of blue (there is no yellow cone). A method to define color was first established by Munsell who described color with 3 terms: hue (blue, red, green, etc), value (lightness/darkness), and chroma (the intensity of a color). The Commission on Illumination (CIE) later created a method to plot different colors in a 3D space by assigning each color (wavelength) 3 different coordinates. The colors are mapped in the 3D space such that the distance between any 2 points in the coordinate system represents a visually perceptible difference that is equivalent to 2 points separated by the same distance anywhere else in the coordinate system. The 3 coordinates represent a lightness axis (L), a red-green axis (a) and a blue-yellow axis (b). This coordinate system allows a formula to be used to represent color differences denoted as delta E or delta E00 (an updated version of the formula). Colors can be measured with colorimeters which are simple devices which contain sensors for red, blue, and green light. Spectrophotometers are devices which break up reflected light into different wavelengths and measure them each separately. Idc about the debate. I didn’t watch because I already knew that it would represent the f*ckery that I describe in this graphic. Colonization➡️migration➡️assimilation ♻️ Colonization is alive and well in the systems that swear to protect us, the ones that believe in a fair democracy. Colonization, migration, and assimilation are intricately tied to trauma because of all the things I represented here: capitalism, the banking model of education (read “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” if you haven’t), professionalism, job and living (food, housing) insecurity, gentrification, hustle/grind culture (we are not machines), and intertwined, because of these systems and events, is gaslighting, splitting from our families and communities, isolation, and anxiety with TRAUMA at the center 💕 These systems and resulting events perpetuate trauma because colonization is never about humanity, it’s about power. And power is oppressive and engenders emotional and physical abuse in the form of militarism and intergenerational abuse 🔁 As we swim through all of this, we have to do what we can to see what is happening to us and to respond: organize, participate in mutual aid, heal, learn about transformative justice, center people who are oppressed. We all have a role in imagining a trauma-informed and community-centered system. It will not happen overnight, and it might not happen in our lifetime. Taken from the cross-party call for the Government to ensure that all children entitled to free school meals have internet access and adequate devices at home, of which Turn2us and a host of MPs and other charities are signatories: Access to the internet and technology has been vital during the lockdown. It has enabled many households to remain in contact with friends and family, to take part in online exercise classes, and to continue learning and studying despite the closure of schools. But this lifeline has not been available for all, with schools across the country reporting struggling families who do not have internet access at home. Those children who can’t access the same resources as their classmates will find themselves even further behind when they return to school. There is a risk that some may never catch up. The lockdown has exposed that there are at least 700,000 disadvantaged children who do not have proper access to computers or the internet and who are not completing their homework. Research by the Sutton Trust revealed that in the most deprived schools, 15% of teachers report that more than a 1/3 of their students would not have adequate access to an electronic device for learning from home. Now we are aware of the size of the digital divide and the implication it will have on the education and opportunity for many of the most vulnerable children in our society, we believe that there must be an obligation to ensure that these children have access to the internet at home. This policy is not a silver bullet. It will not fully close the digital divide or make up for months away from school. But it would make an immediate, tangible difference to some of the most vulnerable families in our society. After multiple rounds of unsuccessful IVF, and a lot of loss and heartache, Natasha still wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer – she started researching, and visited different holistic experts and practitioners. 💫 Triceps Rehab - Supine Progression - 🔹 The triceps is a group of three muscles on the back of the upper arm that come together to form a large tendon attaching to the olecranon. They work together to extend the shoulder and elbow and are heavily involved with pushing activities such as bench pressing, push ups, and shooting a basketball. - 🔸 You can suffer from triceps tendinitis or even tendon rupture through overuse or significant trauma. Steroid use has been found to weaken the tendon and will leave you more prone to triceps injury with heavy tendon loading. Regardless of degree of injury, rehab will include a progressive resistance program to gradually strengthen the triceps muscle and re-train the tendon to accept load. - 👆 The above videos demonstrate a nice progression of isometrics, then concentric exercises, and lastly eccentrics. PMDD or pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder. It usually comes on about 1-2 weeks before your period and the symptoms typically include irritability, anxiety, mood swings, rejection sensitivity and sometimes low or depressed mood. In order for it to be PMDD, a woman’s functioning at work or at home must be impacted. The symptoms resolve once your period starts. PMDD impacts about 3-8% of women with symptoms usually beginning in their 20s. Treatment typically includes lifestyle modifications like cutting down on caffeine, sugar, and alcohol, and then improving sleep and regular exercise. Research supports the use of calcium and vitamin B6 supplementation. Psychotherapy is also an important part of treatment. Antidepressants called SSRIs are the pharmacologic treatment of choice for PMDD and this is supported by randomized controlled trials. There are different ways to dose SSRIs for PMDD: daily, only during the luteal phase of the month (from ovulation to when your period starts), or daily but with an increased dose in the luteal phase. Mold is fungi that has been around for millions of years. Mold spores are everywhere and will always grow where there is moisture. Outdoors it can be more of a nuisance, indoors is where the major health issues can occur. ⠀ ⠀ It is estimated that more than 50% of homes in the US have mold growing in them affecting the air quality. It’s also common in other buildings, such as workplaces and schools, where people spend a significant amount of time.⠀ ⠀ Some people have traditional allergies or asthma to everyday mold exposures and may experience a runny nose, eye irritation, sneezing, hives and other allergic symptoms. However the issue with mold goes well beyond that. ⠀ ⠀ Specific molds produce toxins that can harm human health.
