Today we helped to rescue and distribute more than four pallets of food from four different locations and helped distribute them to fridges throughout the city. We do not purchase food. We reclaim food that’s good to eat, but if not for us would be discarded and wasted. An organizer saw a distribution warehouse regularly trashing tons of good produce that maybe wasn’t fresh enough to make it to a grocery store and then to a home without becoming ripe along the way. This organizer spoke to the workers and offered to get the food directly to people who could use it through community fridges. This is one way that we keep our communities well supplied with healthy fruits and vegetables! Our fall 2020 call for art application is now open for our Massachusetts-based artist wall on Peabody Street in el Punto neighborhood in Salem. This years call is unique as we want provoke deeper conversations with artists and provide a platform to express the constant quest for freedom that individuals and communities of color have and continue to pursue in this country. Because of the work of North Shore CDC, we understand that we have a responsibility when it comes to the art we bring into the community. It must educate the community and its visitors about social justice, instill neighborhood pride, and bring about awareness of existing socio-economic barriers. Inspired by the African American singer, songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone’s song, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” the Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) calls upon all Massachusetts-based artists to partake in the paid opportunity to use their creativity, communication, and advocacy to develop an interpretation of the lyrics and ideas written by jazz legend Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas, of what it means to be free. The curation of 20 murals will be accompanied by seven (7) panels dedicated to selected verses from the song and relevant educational information both in Spanish and English. We believe that the visual combination of art and educational content will create a tangible and impactful experience for the contributing artists, the community, and outside visitors to the open air museum. Twenty creatives will be selected and each person will earn $1,000. Artists are encouraged to interpret the song, pay homage to the singer, songwriters, or the historical context of the Civil Rights Movement, or can use this opportunity to share their our journey of what it means to be free living in the United States. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. #ladiesonwallprofile Bunga. Bunga is the founder of Ladies on Wall. She organized our first event in Jakarta in 2014. She did her first solo graffiti trip to Bangkok, Thailand in 2014. Spent two weeks there until she had a chance to paint in a gas station along with other graffiti artists based in Thailand. She had her first international graffiti event in 2014 a few months later, and before she found Ladies on Wall, it was a South East Asian female graffiti event which was held in Singapore, named The Rebel Daughters under Singapore Youth Festival 2014. She spent a week to paint in Esplanade and Queen Street Singapore. It was inspired her to build Ladies on Wall in Indonesia. In 2015 she had her second solo graffiti trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Spent four days to paint in some places including abandoned train station and a long wall close to Jelatek KRL Station. In 2016 she had a chance to paint in Berlin, Germany while she has a cousins Europe trip for two weeks. In early 2017 she was selected to paint in Singapore with Kare and other graffiti artist based in Singapore, she spent almost two weeks there and it was fully sponsored by Singapore Tourism Board for Visit Singapore campaign. And in the middle of 2017 she also selected to represent Indonesia for joining ASEAN-ROK 50th Anniversary in Manila, Philippines. Spent 9 days to paint on 50 x 50 meter wall with other ASEAN street artists and some volunteer from Philippines and Korea. In early 2018 she was invited again with Singapore Tourism Board to attending Singapore Art Week and Art Stage Singapore with Kare. And one month later she had a chance to paint in Osaka, Japan. This time around she managed and paint along Dakjoah, Kare and Novi for Mimmit Peinttaa 2020. A MASSIVE explosion in Lebanons capital city Beirut has killed at least 100 people and injured nearly 4,000 others. The enormous blast could be heard some 125 miles away in Cyprus after it erupted in the port area of Beirut. 🔸What happened in Lebanon? The death toll in Beirut has risen to 100 after a huge explosion ripped through a port area. Lebanese health minister Hamad Hasan said I have never in my life seen a disaster this big, as 250,000 people were left homeless. Pictures showed buildings destroyed, people walking wounded, and a sea of wreckage after the blast that could be heard some 125 miles across the sea in Cyprus. Nearby buildings around the port have been leveled, windows and doors blown out, and fires continue to burn as smoke plumes billow across the Lebanese capital. 🔸What caused the Beirut explosion? The source of the blast is believed to be 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate which had been stored in a warehouse without safety measures since 2014. Security sources reportedly claimed a welder had sparked the initial fire that in turn ignited the chemicals - causing a blast the fifth the size of Hiroshima. Ammonium nitrate is mainly used as a fertilizer but has also been linked to terror attacks after being used in homemade bombs. Lebanons internal security chief Abbas Ibrahim has insisted that these were explosive materials rather than military-grade explosives. Security services there said the carnage may have been caused by a fire in a depot of highly volatile materials seized from a ship a few months ago and stored there. 🔸 What did the officials say about blast? Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said that those responsible for the explosion at a “dangerous” warehouse in Beirut port area that rocked the capital would pay the price. He said: “I promise you that this catastrophe will not pass without accountability. OVER 200 driving offences were spotted by #Warwickshire Police’s Commercial Vehicle Unit during a five day operation in September. During the operation – carried out in support of Project Edward, the campaign for Every Day Without A Road Death – officers used the Op Tramline supercab, a specially-adapted HGV owned by Highways England, to look for risky driver behaviours that could cause or contribute towards a collision. During the week, forty-one people received Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving, often at high speed – a potential six points on their licence and a £200 fine. A further 68 people received TORs for not wearing a seatbelt – a potential £100 fine. Twenty people received TORs for not being in control of their vehicle – three points and a £100 fine – and 12 people were stopped for speeding. One man was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply after he was stopped for traffic offences on the M40 southbound. A significant quantity of the drug was recovered following a search of the vehicle. One HGV was seen driving on the hard shoulder at over 50mph where a family could potentially be stationary if broken down. When officers looked into his cab he was spotted on his mobile phone. Another driver was caught reading his delivery notes and using his phone while driving at the national speed limit on the M40. Officers also saw a driver watching TV on a laptop while travelling on the M40 at nearly 60mph. Project Edward focused on those who drive for work and around 35 per cent of all drivers stopped were in commercial vehicles – also putting their livelihoods in jeopardy. For two drivers, the offences were so serious they were referred to the Traffic Commissioner. PS Carl Stafford said “This is sadly only a snapshot of the week’s findings and unfortunately demonstrates the real driver behaviours that are taking place on a daily basis on our roads. “We will continue to proactively police Warwickshire’s roads including the M6, M40, M42 and M69 by looking for people that could pose serious danger to themselves and other road users. Six Feet of Distance [SFOD] is a new platform which assembles a number of pre-existing online Detroit art + social practice projects in a way that aligns with the velocity of the new social and economic realities of the current novel coronavirus-induced crisis. Six Feet of Distance will be an open-ended, self-curating process which will invite and publish thoughtful responses to what it means to live through such an unprecedented collapse of familiarity and everyday life. We shall begin with only a few reflections and works but expect to build with input from across the spectrum. We start from the perspective that we do not yet know what these new realities are but that collectively we are better equipped to determine and perhaps even influence them. Among the content with which we are launching the project is a public questionnaire that will form an ongoing health check on how the Detroit art community is coping and adapting. We shall also include a calendar (to be regularly updated) that lists online events as well as resources for living with socially distanced actions. Finally, we shall publish meditations of varying kinds and length on the significance of the moment we’re living through. Six Feet of Distance is a durational project that will last only as long as we live under a shelter-in-place order in the time of COVID-19. There was no way I was leaving Houston without visiting the Third Ward. The way Sheila Jackson Lee spoke about it, the way people inside that church beamed with pride at the mention of their home, the way they felt seen. The source of something good in this world. I had to. My homie from Houston showed me around... Turkey Leg Hut first (lawd 🙏🏾), then onto the Third Ward and the Fifth Ward where he’s from. I get back to the hotel and I’m drained. 13 hours of sleep later, I’m up thinking. Finally processing. George Floyd’s passing hurts because it feels like we lost family. It could’ve been anyone I love. My young nephews, my cousins, my uncles, my friends. I wish this was a world where everybody is seen as equal, but it’s not yet. So if you’ve been trying to understand the pain and the anger on the TV screens and in the newspapers over the last couple of weeks, it’s because pots boiled over seeing Floyd fight to live for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. A little piece inside of me died to be so brutally reminded that his life - that black lives - can mean so little. So don’t just move onto something else next week. Yesssss!!!! We crossed 2 Million subscribers on our youtube channel - Mad Stuff with Rob. Honestly it’s a super happy and surreal feeling. Like I mentioned in my stories yesterday it has been a very slow and difficult journey for me. We were stuck at around 1500 subs for a very long time. When I first started out I honestly thought that the popularity and fan base from my TV show would shift directly to YouTube but NO that didn’t happen at all. No one even knew I existed on YouTube, in fact even after having 2M subs I do feel that there are some people still discovering the channel randomly and joining the fam. You can’t imagine how difficult it was to reach the 10k mark and then slowly 100k to finally the big milestone of 1 Million. It took us 5 yrs to achieve that and it’s all thanks to you guys and my fellow creators who were always there to help, support and guide me. Indigo Arts Alliance is proud to have partnered on the 754 Congress St. Art Installation project titled Counting from Thirteen, our Black is Beautiful street mural and helping to document his George Floyd mural in downtown Portland. Covid_19 adds a new dimension of risk to the job for firefighters - both on and off the front lines. Fire crews are already armed with significant personal protective equipment while theyre battling active fires which includes gloves, face and neck shrouds, and protective eyewear. When they are at base camps, firefighting personnel are required to wear face masks and maintain physical distancing. Meals are staggered to keep crews separated, and everyone gets regular temperature checks. The crews, which number in the hundreds, would ordinarily set up base camp on small grounds near the fires, but due to COVID-19 concerns, they are housed in hotels or set up on vacant fairgrounds outfitted with several hand-washing stations. Like you, our customers and community, New York Distilling Company is grappling with how to recognize the protests going on all around us, and how to make a positive difference. We’re a small company with limited resources. We don’t pretend to have particular insights on the big picture – we make gin and rye— but we love our community and its diversity and feel the desire and need to be purposeful and attentive. Within our industry, a tragedy occurred last Friday. Du Nord Craft Spirits, located in Minneapolis on the same block as a police precinct, was set on fire and then deluged with 400,000 gallons of water from their sprinkler system. The damage was devastating. Du Nord is one of the few minority-owned craft distillers in the United States, co-founded by Shanelle and Chris Montana in 2013. Chris, the immediate past President of our national association, is one of the most respected and admired leaders of our industry. We cannot lose his voice and presence. This week we are thinking of Shanelle and Chris and directing our efforts toward helping their distillery recover. We are making an initial donation today of $1,000 to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the American Craft Spirit Association, which you can find below And we hope to do more. Help us support Du Nord. Either donate directly to the fund or buy our spirits. Because of strange, frustrating and anachronistic NY State Liquor Authority regulations we are not allowed to say things like “all profits” this week will be donated. We are not allowed to specifically tie a percentage donation, or a ‘dollars-per-bottle-sold’ donation to a particular charity or cause. So we won’t.
