Black Lives Matter: I’ve thought long and hard about what to say in regards to everything that has transpired. I will never fully understand the plight of the African-American community, it is not my story and so I cannot speak for them. That though does not mean that I won’t stand in solidarity with my black brothers and sisters to stand for justice. I won’t lie, part of me was fearful of things escalating and a peaceful protest turning violent considering how volatile things have been lately, but what actually transpired on Saturday was beautiful. The mix of people from all parts of the spectrum, ages, and backgrounds coming together to support their fellow humans on their path to finding a righteous solution to injustices. Tense moments being quelled by the leaders of the march, not buying into the violence. The pain, yet more LOVE. It was an incredibly heartwarming experience. I felt like it was my duty as a human being, and as an artist, to document this moment in time, for our own records and that of future generations. Love more, hate less. Keep the peace and an open heart, that’s the path to change. Stand together, and we can achieve just that. To anyone who’s been involved in these protests, if you know the names of any of the people in these pictures, please have them reach out to me so I can properly tag them and send them the pictures. In case you missed it, here’s the update regarding deaths in the U.S. caused by COVID-19. We just surpassed 200,000 deaths last week. That’s pretty absurd. For those who can’t comprehend how big of a number that is, that’s roughly the population of the cities of Salt Lake City, UT or Montgomery, AL. Please continue to practice social distancing, wear your face masks, and wash your hands. Also, make sure you’re listening to folks who are following SCIENCE, not politics or “wokeness.” Be safe and practice these safety tips because the effort to fight COVID-19 requires unity. #LiveFreeUSA #LiveFree #COVID19 #COVID_19 #BeSafe - @livefreeusa on Instagram

None of the officers involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor will be charged for her death. A Kentucky grand jury announced Wednesday that Louisville officer Brett Hankison, who was fired in June, would be charged in connection with the incident, but for shooting into neighboring apartments. He was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment, and his bond was set at $15,000. No charges were announced for the other two officers involved. Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was killed in her Louisville home in March during a botched narcotics raid. The announcement to indict Brett Hankison for anything less than manslaughter charges was largely seen as a disappointment to people calling for justice to be served in #BreonnaTaylor’s police killing in March. A closer look at the grand jury findings showed that Hankison was being indicted for endangering the lives of people with the initials f “C.D.,” “T.M.,” and “Z.F.” — believed to be Taylor’s neighbors. Consequently, that means that the grand jury did not find enough evidence to charge any of the three officers as it directly related to Taylor’s killing. I dont post much anymore so the algorithm gods are probably not on my side here Think of all the fun times you’ve had in your life, and think of where they happened. If youre like me (sorry about that) a good chunk of them have probably happened at independent music venues. Even before Covid, running a venue was a gamble. Many of my best memories are of venues that no longer exist. In these Covid times, what once was a gamble became an all out battle for the salvation of the institutions that we hold dear. I know myself and my colleagues in the industry, both performers and professionals are going to fight like hell to save what can be saved, but it cant be done alone. If you value what these venues have brought in to your life then take a moment to help save theirs. Write your elected officials and ask them to support legislation that provides relief to those that are about to lose everything. In the meantime Wear a mask so that we can all get back to work sooner. If you wont wear a mask then the best thing you can do is shut your mouth, both literally and figuratively. Also arrest Brett Hankison, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove for murder. If you don’t know who they are, please look it up. - @thepennyarcade on Instagram

To meaningfully reduce the US prison population and halt the spread of COVID-19 in prisons requires decarceration without exclusions. The number of people serving life sentences has continued to rise, despite the declining rates for violent crimes for the past 25 years. “Every year we keep somebody in prison after 30, and certainly after 40 or 50, we’re getting diminishing returns for public safety. -- The Sentencing Projects Senior Advisor Marc Mauer (link to full article in bio) - @endlifeimprisonment on Instagram
Due to Covid, students’ A-Level and GCSE results this year will be based on their past performance and teachers’ predictions, but also “statistically adjusted” based on their school’s past results. This has resulted in 37% of A-level students having their results downgraded compared to their predicted grades. Unsurprisingly, working-class students were disproportionately impacted. In Scotland public pressure forced the authorities to abandon this model and accept teachers predictions. We need to take action to force them to do the same here! Join our protest to demand there is no downgrading. (Link for protest on bio) - @thesocialistpartyni on Instagram

Last night, on the 100 day anniversary of the uprising against police violence, several Portland DSA members, including members of the steering committee, were arrested on fabricated felony charges. This comes as the real violent forces of repression, the federally-deputized Oregon State Police and the Portland Police Bureau, continue to beat, brutalize, and gas peaceful protesters. These violent agents of the state terrorize Portland neighborhoods with impunity, where babies sleep and families are forced to wear respirators in their own homes, at the behest of politicians that are supposed to be on our side”. This is part of a long pattern of political repression from the state. As socialists, we recognize that capitalism and racism are intertwined, and the police are the enforcers of these oppressive systems. We will continue to stand against police violence and call for a total defunding and abolition of the police state in Portland. - @portlanddsa on Instagram
Some 100 people gathered at Phoenix City Hall’s plaza for a candlelight vigil Thursday night to honor the lives of Breonna Taylor, Dion Johnson and “every Brown and Black soul lost to senseless police violence.” This comes days after prosecutors in both cases announced that they won’t criminally charge any of the officers involved directly in the deaths of Taylor and Johnson. The vigil was organized by The W.E. Rising Project, a community-led group formed in the weeks following George Floyd’s death that demonstrates against systemic racism and police brutality. Several attendees spoke of their rage and weariness over police shooting unarmed Black men and women. Erma Johnson, Dion Johnson’s mother, said she misses her son’s daily phone calls to check in on her. “He was my heart. The G20 riots on June 26, 2010. I’ve been thinking about this post for 6 months, I’ve been thinking about this day for 10 years. It’s never far from me, especially when I’m covering a protest. The black bloc may have been the catalyst for the violence that caused superficial damage to businesses and banks in Toronto’s downtown core, but the police response to that property damage created the greatest breach of civil liberties in Canadian history. It feels more important than ever to post these images, to remember the police overreach that weekend, especially now as we as a society address issues of systemic racism in policing and consider defunding and reducing the militarization of our police forces. The one good thing I took away from my experience of June 26, 2010, was my career. That was the day I committed to being a visual journalist. #RepostPlus @realcandaceowens - - - - - - Only in an election year can America go from “10 times more deadly than the flu” tyranny, to nationwide anarchy in a matter of weeks. If millions of American don’t die from the rapid spread of the Covid-19 acquired during these riots, than it is time to admit that #coronavirus was an election ploy to depress our economy. The Democrats were willing to allow MILLIONS of Americans to lose their jobs in an effort to stunt our booming economy, and jam through their socialist agenda. The goal was to force millions of Americans into government dependency, so that their leftist politicians can offer hand-outs in returns for votes in November. Under Trump, too many Americans were coming off welfare, thereby decreasing the appeal of the Democrat’s election promises for more “free stuff”. Americans were becoming more hopeful, and families were becoming more independent. Then all of that magically stopped with forced shutdowns, all across America— led by Democrat governors who claimed it was necessary for “safety”. We knew the numbers never made any sense. These riots prove it was never about safety or social-distancing. It was about protecting the only means that the Democrats have to guarantee votes: creating slaves to government handouts. HOW CAN ANYONE VOTE DEMOCRAT EVER AGAIN? THESE PEOPLE ARE SATANIC, and there is no doubt in my mind that it is their anarchist groups (ANTIFA, BLM) that are being bussed into Minnesota to fan the chaos, while blaming it on black Americans that are upset over George Floyd. - @itsdoobietime_ on Instagram

I’ve seen a lot of hate directed towards protestors saying that everyone there is looting and that they are fools for putting themselves at risk of getting injured by the police. Video taken by @sethbeckton (Seth and I were a foot from each other both recording the protests and out of nowhere an undirected rubber bullet came right in between us. Imagine going blind from a rubber bullet for peacefully documenting history?) I can say for myself specifically for Denver, that this is not the case. Although there was some vandalism from select individuals, 99.9 percent of the people there were peacefully protesting. At a place that is meant for protesting (The capital) I witnessed some extreme behavior from the Denver Police Department, who were consistently using excessive force against everyone over the first 6 or so days of the protests. Eventually the curfew was lifted and the police backed off, instantly the energy changed down there and it was 100 percent peaceful, with no police presence. The protests themselves needed to happen but the system didn’t want it to. The people showed up and made their voices heard. i’ve been relatively quiet about everything going on lately, pandemic and all - yesterday i felt the urge to go out and document what was going on for myself. i support nonviolent protesting (and appreciate those that have been practicing that) and i firmly believe that the injustice and systemic racism needs to end. i was raised to love all people. i’m really disappointed in humanity. events taking place that should be bringing us together, reminding us that we are all in this as one, have been doing just the opposite. we are a minuscule group of beings on a microscopic rock floating in an unfathomably vast universe. this needs to end. the world, this country, is going haywire. i’m not exactly sure how to end this, what i do know is that we all need to be better. let’s start with that. - @dd on Instagram

NYCHRP is in solidarity with people in the Philippines, who are mourning the 48th anniversary of martial law, declared by the late dictator President Ferdinand Marcos on Sept 21 in 1972. We are here to say NEVER AGAIN to martial law. NYCHRP’s very existence was the result of the violent murder of Lily Hilao, one of the first detainees to die under martial law. Her sister Marie Hilao Enriquez was on a speaking tour in 2004 to the United States and suggested to form a human rights organization in New York. Since its founding, NYCHRP has continued to fight for human rights in the Philippines. . Under martial law, 70,000 people were imprisoned, 34,000 were tortured, 77 people disappeared and 3,240 were killed. Victims included activists, peasants, and the working class - all of whom were protesting the rising national debt, the underdevelopment of industries, government corruption, the privatization of basic services and the landlessness of peasant farmers. Even today, the people are still fighting back against the same forms of repression that have persisted over time. Since the Anti-terror bill was signed into law, the persecution of human rights defenders has intensified. We remember Randy Echanis, who was a peasant leader and peace advocate. We remember Zara Alvarez, who was an investigator of human rights abuses with Karapatan, the largest grassroots human rights alliance in the Philippines. . . 📝:Anne-Marie Yvon/ @espaces_autochtones 📷: @demersivanoh . . . #justicepourjoyce #joyceechaquan #autochtones #Canada #Joliette #Québec #atikamekw #manawan #enquête #racisme #rcinfo - @radiocanadainfo on Instagram

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky grand jury brought no charges against Louisville police for the killing of Breonna Taylor during a drug raid gone wrong, with prosecutors saying Wednesday that two officers who fired their weapons at the Black woman were justified in using force to protect themselves. The only charges brought by the grand jury were three counts of wanton endangerment against fired Officer Brett Hankison for shooting into Taylor’s neighbors’ homes during the raid on the night of March 13. The FBI is still investigating potential violations of federal law in the case. - @vote_nola on Instagram

ONE of the officers involved in the murder of Breonna Taylor have been charged with the crime of wanton endangerment. Not even a felony indictment, for ending her life as she slept in her own home. This is disgustingly unfair. Breonnas life mattered. Her justice matters. And this is NOT justice. #BLM #justiceforbreonnataylor - @organizeflorida on Instagram

@southseattleemerald “This is an incredible win for abolition advocates and organizations like La Resistencia who have paved the way for progress of this magnitude. “This was a process of years of work, honestly,” says Maru Villalpando, an immigration activist who founded La Resistencia. Working with City officials was difficult. “We didn’t have any support in the City of Tacoma. When Strickland was the mayor in 2014, she actually came to a tour of the facility in the middle of the hunger strikes. I walked up to her and I asked her what her position was. She was very dismissive. She brushed us off.” “On August 4 2020, in collaboration with La Resistencia, a grassroots organization that has been working for over five years to shut down the facility, and the Commission on Immigrant and Refugees Affairs (CIRA), the Tacoma City Council passed a resolution advocating for the release of all detainees at NWIPC on parole or bond. According to the official announcement, the resolution intends to “directly address health and racial equity issues impacting individuals detained at the NWIPC.” The work continues to #ShutDownNWDC and all detention centers across the so-called US, but a move in the right direction. #covid_19 #abolishice #shutdownnwdc #freethemall - @laresistencianw on Instagram

There was just a bit of press at our wide awake action this morning 😳👋 If youre wondering what were all about, come to our Welcome to Sunrise meeting this Wednesday (link in bio). ---- At 6AM this morning, protesters took the advice of Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and used his words against him. Over 100 DC residents came out before daybreak to gather around the outside of Sen. Graham’s home in southeast DC. Between speeches, chants, blow horns and home-made drums, Graham’s voice was played over a loudspeaker saying, I want you to use my words against me... if theres a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said, Lets let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination. “In the spirit of RBG, we will not allow a double standard in how our Congress deals with late-term Supreme Court appointments,” said Aura Angélica, an organizer with Sunrise DC. “Senator Graham told us he wouldn’t allow a Supreme Court nominee during an election year-- he told us to use his words against him if a seat opened up this late in the game-- we’re here today, doing just that.” The DC chapter of the Sunrise Movement is collaborating with the organization Shut Down DC to carry out one of several early morning actions to serve as a literal and figurative wake up call to politicians who hold decision-making power regarding the empty seat in the Supreme Court. - @sunrisemvmtdc on Instagram

Almost 7 years ago this person changed my whole damn life by introducing me to abolition, and now she’s saying it in the @nytimes 💥 . “When people, especially white people, consider a world without the police, they envision a society as violent as our current one, merely without law enforcement — and they shudder. As a society, we have been so indoctrinated with the idea that we solve problems by policing and caging people that many cannot imagine anything other than prisons and the police as solutions to violence and harm. People like me who want to abolish prisons and police, however, have a vision of a different society, built on cooperation instead of individualism, on mutual aid instead of self-preservation. What would the country look like if it had billions of extra dollars to spend on housing, food and education for all? This change in society wouldn’t happen immediately, but the protests show that many people are ready to embrace a different vision of safety and justice.” - @peacecosour on Instagram

Tens of thousands of people showed their anger, frustration, and sadness at the decision not to charge police officers for the killing of Breonna Taylor, filling streets in dozens of cities across the country on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. While many of the demonstrations were peaceful, some turned violent, as protesters clashed with local, state, and federal police officers. In Taylor’s hometown of Louisville, two police officers were shot during the protests. In Portland, a police precinct was targeted with fire and rocks, and police said a Molotov cocktail was thrown at officers. In Denver and Buffalo, drivers drove cars through protesters in what has become a familiar scene during this year’s ongoing Black Lives Matter protests. Dozens of protesters were arrested as clashes with police continued into the early hours of Thursday morning. However, in many cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., thousands of protesters peacefully showed their opposition to the decision announced Wednesday by the attorney general of Kentucky. via: @vicenews 🔗Link in the bio #breonnataylor #justiceforbreonnataylor #justiceforbreonna - @viceimpact on Instagram

An Extinction Rebellion protester proved a catwalk surprise at Paris Fashion Week when they gatecrashed the Christian Dior show and unfurled a sign that read We Are All Fashion Victims”. Reuters reports that a spokesman for the movement in France said the protest was designed to highlight “the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and society. Its not the first time the environment action group have targeted fashion shows to get their message across. At London Fashion Week last year activists attempted to form a human traffic blockade around venues. As the runway seasons long-anticipated return since Covid-19 halted the calendar in March got underway, it wasnt exactly business as usual in the French capital. Only 350 fashionistas were present for the show, instead of the usual 1750, with face masks the hot accessory. #ParisFashionWeek #Fashion #Protest #Environment #ClimateChange #bbcnews - @bbcnews on Instagram

JUST SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SACBEE ARTICLE- PHOTOS TO ILLUSTRATE THE POINT: Federal, state, county, and city governments ALL need to be held accountable. You remember when taking a knee was the popular performative gesture for electeds? Check on them now. What have they done?? Folks are dying in the streets RIGHT NOW, and our State electeds are placing votes to protect Law Enforcement. And ‘walking the walk?’ Speak for yourself. Democrats who snubbed their noses at calls to Defund the Police and instead introduced legislation that legitimize police and increase their budgets are just as bad. #DefundThePolice #DefendBlackLives - @blackramento916 on Instagram

while your president hides in a bunker with the lights off like a little pinkish orange babyback bitch, Black people continue a centuries long fight for basic human rights and equality. police brutality/terrorism, a vicious arm of systemic oppression along with the rest of the crooked criminal justice system, claims the lives and torments the soul/body/minds of more than we can name. coupled with and buoyed by the military industrial complex, lack of sufficient educational/health care/housing access, predatory loans, school to prison pipeline, prejudicial hiring and workforce practices and so much more, there is a whole complex sinister fuckass system rooted in white supremacy to keep Black/Brown/poor people down. this is all invoked every time a Black person is murdered by police without consequence. echoing the words of Tamika Mallory...white people, this is our problem, our institutions’ problem, our government’s problem. it’s on us to do the hard work of educating ourselves, holding each other accountable, donating and supporting righteous organizations, signing petitions, protesting, amplifying messages, LISTENING, etc. we all have a role to play. especially as a white person in the hip hop community it’s my duty to fight for the pillars of justice this art was created from and for, and i know i can do so much more. I put a google drive in my bio with a shit ton of great educational literature. in Sac, I’ve seen such an amazing coalition of people and community organizers (particularly, incredible Black women) putting their body and souls on the line to uplift the people. I’ve listed a few local organizations you can support and donate to. America loves Black culture - it’s far past time to extend that same love, respect, and justice to Black people. it’s on all of us to lead with empathy and action, and to support, love, and look out for one another. it’s imperative we use this time to harness our passion and emotion into organizing and action to finally create a better tomorrow. this country has always been terrified of a truly unified people. a liberated world is a better world for everybody. For those criticizing protestors: If you haven’t read up on the unprovoked and outrageous violence perpetrated by police against protestors and bystanders please take a moment to do so now. Slate covers it well but feel free to run your own google search and check the accounts of people who were there. . I don’t want to see any criticism of “looters” or “inciting chaos” and I sure as hell don’t want to hear about any “thugs” (great word to dehumanize the people you apply it to) unless you are talking about the egregious violence, looting, chaos inducing behaviour of the police/national guard. . People in power are criticizing and debasing a movement that challenges them. Of course they are. They benefit from systemic racism and they hold that hate in their heart. . A reminder that the Vallejo Police Department continues to defund our communities. Whether it’s mismanaged pension obligations that result in our City being the first in California to file for bankruptcy or the millions and millions that we pay out due to civil lawsuits and settlements every year: the police loot our communities of resources day in and day out. . Then they want to turn around and act like they play a significant part in our communities when the people take a stand and demand that we receive the same level of investment and funding for much needed services and programs 🙄 . Right behind the police are the officials and politicians who are funded with police union money, who are collaborators and apologists to police violence, who fail to step up when it comes to holding the system accountable. . We are committed to a long fight and a vision for community care, for keeping ourselves safe and accountable, for changing the system that for too long has kept a privileged few in power. We may not get there tomorrow, but we’ll get there together. - @defundvallejopd on Instagram

black people are dying at the hands of casual and systemic racism every single day. this deep rooted issue did not end with breonna taylor. it did not end with elijah mcclain. but with the way life and social media has slowly but surely fizzled back to normal, you’d think that would be the case. those innocent lives lost still have not received justice to this day. this movement is not one that lasts a week, a month, a year. serious change does not occur overnight. so you absolutely must do better. the fear of the world’s reaction to blackness is one with pain and complexity that cannot be understood unless you have faced it yourself. black life can no longer be seen as disposable. demand justice, recognize that silence is complicity and another hashtag is not enough. the fact that this still has to be said is beyond me, but black lives fucking matter. swipe to see who to call/email to demand that that the officers who shot jacob are fired and charged, and that kenosha PD pays for all of his medical bills. As a 2nd generation Laotian American who grew in Richmond I feel the need to stand by black people during this time to dismantle white supremacy and the systems of oppression that has kept them down for generations. I know Laotian folks have been victims of racism, I know weve learned to stay silent because of our history as refugees, I understand the pain and fear many of us face to stand up and take action, but at this very moment I need my folks to heal and unlearn this trauma and support our black brothers and sisters in this movement right now. . . My call to action for yall is to not be a bystander and support by donating if you have the means, educate your family and youth, heal ourselves and our community, and become more compassionate individuals. If you stand by me I will support you in any way that I can. These past few days have been chaos and I dont want anyone to get hurt. Over the last two weeks, Congress has voted on a series of bills that will determine the federal funding for much of the next year. Representative Ocasio-Cortez put forward dozens of amendments to ensure that our spending reflects our values. Ultimately, several of the Congresswoman’s amendments were accepted by the House - including provisions that would effectively stop the federal government from buying tear gas, sending federal agents into U.S. cities without their consent, and enacting President Trump’s racist housing laws. While some of the Congresswoman’s amendments did not make it into the final package, they sparked important conversations among her colleagues that we expect will continue - most notably on the predatory nature of some of our military recruitment practices. This country prides itself on its all volunteer army, but in reality, we have a poverty draft. Our army is disproportionately made up of low-income Americans, due in part to aggressive military recruitment from low-income high schools - a practice that should be ended. Some public schools in our poorest communities have no guidance counselor, but they have an Army recruiter in their cafeteria every day. Entering into military service can be a great career choice, but it’s also a life or death decision that needs to be entered into soberly and with a full understanding of your options for professional advancement. Predatory military recruiting is also currently taking place on live streaming services. Using the website Twitch.tv, which averages more than 15 million daily users. Army, Navy, and Air Force esports teams broadcast gameplay to children as young as 13 and encourage them to consider enlisting. Military recruiting offices spend millions of dollars on marketing deals to promote their teams to these young people. While the Army, Navy and Air Force engage in this practice, notably, the Marine Corps refuses to participate, believing, correctly, that neither war nor sacrifice for one’s country is something to be trivialized or “gamified.” We need to end military recruitment via online streaming services such as Twitch. - @repaoc on Instagram
