Calcutta in the 1960s was a city of political upheavals, mass agitation, labor strikes and student unions’ protests. The turbulent being of the city served as the base of the Left’s rise West Bengal. Deindustrialization of the state began to take place in the 1960s leaving the next generations high and dry. The Naxalite movement, led by the fuming youth of Calcutta in the 1960s, triggered the political agitation. COSME E DAMIÃO, DOCES, IBEJADA E CARURU: tradição e sincretismo religioso. Nos dias 26 (para os católicos) e 27 de setembro (para candomblecistas e umbandistas), comemoram-se, respectivamente, o Dia de Cosme e Damião e o Dia dos Ibejis. Na tradição católica, a data celebra os santos Cosme e Damião, gêmeos que nasceram e morreram na Ásia Menor por volta do ano 300 d.C. Os irmãos usavam a fé, unida aos conhecimentos científicos, como poder de cura. Como forma de caridade e amor, realizavam tratamentos sem cobrar nada. Às crianças doentes davam balas para amenizar seu sofrimento. Foram perseguidos e degolados, por ordem do imperador romano Deocleciano, que não aceitava a fé cristã. Os santos são reconhecidos pela Igreja Católica como padroeiros dos gêmeos, dos médicos e dos farmacêuticos. No candomblé, os gêmeos são sincretizados com os orixás crianças “Ibejis”, filhos gêmeos (masculino e feminino) dos orixás Xangô e Iansã. São considerados protetores das crianças. Na umbanda, as festividades são marcadas pela participação de espíritos encantados de crianças que amam doces e travessuras. Em todas as tradições, tem-se a distribuição de doces e brinquedos como forma de homenagear ou cumprir promessas feitas às divindades por parte de devotos e simpatizantes. Somado a isso, o povo de santo tem o costume de fazer caruru (uma comida típica da tradição afro-brasileira), chamado também de “Caruru dos Santos” e “Caruru dos sete meninos”. Como toda comida de santo, o caruru tem o intuito de partilhar, com fartura e por meio da fé, a prosperidade, saúde e bonança entre os presentes. Todos os anos, por toda a cidade — mas principalmente no subúrbio carioca —, vemos a criançada nas ruas à espera dos tradicionais saquinhos de doces. Dia de alegria e diversão. 🥳 Znamy najbardziej budujące zdjęcie Warszawy 1945–1949! 🥳 Ze wszystkich zdjęć prezentowanych na wystawie „Warszawa na nowo. Fotografie reporterskie 1945-1949” wybraliście fotografię Karola Szczecińskiego, na której widzimy rodzinny posiłek w ruinach kamienicy przy ul. Puławskiej! Na wystawie, która powstała z okazji miejskich obchodów 75. rocznicy odbudowy Warszawy (możecie ją oglądać do 30 WRZEŚNIA), prezentujemy 75 zdjęć ze zbiorów archiwum Polskiej Agencji Prasowej z drugiej połowy lat 40. Ich autorami są fotoreporterzy z różnych agencji fotograficznych działających tuż po wojnie, zanim w 1951 roku powstała jedna Centralna Agencja Fotograficzna, m.in. Jerzy Baranowski, Stanisław Dąbrowiecki, Jan Tymiński, Karol Szczeciński, Władysław Forbert, Lech Pieńkowski, Stanisław Urbanowicz, Zdzisław Wdowiński, Bolesław Miedza, Tadeusz Kubiak, Wojciech Kondracki. Wśród tych zdjęć szukaliśmy jednego, które najlepiej odda ducha tamtego czasu i ogrom pracy włożonej w odbudowę Warszawy. Nasi zwiedzający najwięcej głosów oddali na zdjęcie z 1945 roku wykonane z istniejącej wciąż kamienicy przy ulicy Grażyny 3 przez wyrwę w ścianie szczytowej. Na pierwszym planie widać rodzinę przy stole, dalej widoczna jest ulica Puławska i zabudowania nieopodal obecnego parku Morskie Oko. „Wynik naszego plebiscytu pokazał, co w tamtym czasie znaczyło słowo „budujący”. To nie tylko pnące się do góry nowe budynki, ale także umiejętność przetrwania i prawie normalnego życia w skrajnie trudnych warunkach. I to właśnie było i jest budujące!” – mówi Anna Brzezińska, jedna z kuratorek wystawy. „To zdjęcie jest ikoną odbudowującej się Warszawy i odradzającego się w niej życia. Mimo wszechobecnych ruin jest w tym obrazie energia, determinacja, fantazja. Bez tego nie byłoby dzisiaj naszej stolicy” – dodaje Katarzyna Madoń-Mitzner, kuratorka wystawy. While working for the NY Post, I continued to look for kids playing creatively without adult supervision on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood nearby the newspapers headquarters. At the end of my shift, I often had partially-used rolls of film in my cameras which would be wasted so I tried to find photos to shoot to finish the rolls. Corinne: Selections from the Lesbian Herstory Archives (on view at Midway through March 28th); Drew Sawyer, Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenblaum Leonian Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum; and artist Carmen Winant. Together, they will discuss the practice of the late artist, activist, and educator Tee A. Corinne, considering the position of her photographic work within the discourse of feminist photography, as well as the formal strategies that she implemented as interventional methods, disrupting the patriarchal perspectives through which women have predominantly been depicted in the fine arts and beyond. Registrar un huracán Historia publicada en @periodicoam 📸: @alainpantaleon ✍🏼: @li.ze.th_ En tiempos de desastres naturales y caos, cuando por momentos “efímeros” nos quedamos sin respuestas; documentar lo que ocurre alrededor se vuelve aún más importante, los registros quedan ahí para revivir la permanencia de la historia, la memoria, el significado, la emoción y el tiempo. Alain Pantaleon, fotógrafo del equipo de Witness Visual Storytellers vivió el paso del huracán Katrina hace 15 años en el norte de la Habana, Cuba y documentó el desastre por varios días. Aprovechando los recursos a su alcance en ese momento (5 últimos rollos), salió solo y con colegas a registrar lo que ocurría en las calles durante la tormenta, a componer fotos y atestiguar las historias que se intersectaban en un mismo espacio. Fue un desastre natural que provocó muchas pérdidas humanas, económicas y materiales en distintos lugares, Alain comentó - “esta vez la devastación fue increíble, yo salí a fotografiar lo que se podía ver, al ser impactado por una ola corrí y tuve que subir lo más alto que pude para no ser arrastrado, sentí cómo los edificios se estremecían y también que era el último momento”- y dentro de esa adrenalina, las fotos son hoy un recuerdo que aviva la memoria de muchos y despierta la emoción de otros. Sin duda los hechos naturales sacuden siempre la raíz de la cotidianeidad, aunque en Cuba por anécdotas de Alain, “la población en su mayoría está preparada cuando los medios alertan sobre un desastre como éste pero de igual forma, siempre toman por sorpresa”; la vida se siente incierta. En momentos así, el inventario de complejidades se expande pero la solidaridad también florece, el instinto se prende y la espera se vuelve cotidiana, detrás del lente solo quedaba estar alerta y muy presente, ahorrar rollos, pensar los tiros, dejar que el tiempo pase, que la ayuda llegue y volverse un equipo con la gente. Uno de los poderes de la fotografía es que atestigua para #generarmemoria y dar significado al tiempo. Beirut, 10 years ago. • TL,DR. I look back on this set occasionally, and think of them as some of my favourite pictures — I’d gone to Beirut for my first and only time, a long weekend away from Jordan where I was living at the time. Photographically, I wasn’t even a “photographer”, I had no idea what I was doing and just shot pictures for the sake of documenting the things in front of me. The best approach, that only happens with naivety. The trip was a big deal for me; I’d never been to Lebanon, a country forming one half of my heritage. I knew it from the stories told by my family, and the history I’d studied of the region. I briefly saw family there, but was excited to explore the city on my own terms. • Walking around Beirut, it’s impossible not to see and feel history. Bullet holes riddle the facades of hip restaurants and cafes in the old quarters, a permanent reminder of multiple devastating conflicts, but also a show of defiance - a city and people that will always rebuild, and refuse to be knocked down. Alongside the displays of wealth and contemporary life, older generations fill the gaps, doing things as they always have. It is heartbreaking to witness the devastation of Tuesday’s explosion in any city, but the feeling is magnified now more than ever, and especially with Lebanon — a country that is dealing with a crippling economic crisis already (think ours is bad? Google theirs), as well as a health crisis caused by Covid-19 (same for many nations). • This post isn’t to ask you to donate to anything, but maybe pause and reflect on our relative luck. Try to imagine if on top of everything going on, an explosion like that happened here, or a police officer knelt on your brother’s or father’s neck till he no longer breathes. Think of ways to reach out to help your neighbours, and do it. Whether it’s checking in with people affected by a situation, reading up on something you didn’t know about and trying to better yourself, making a donation, or protesting. Try not to feel drowned in the noise or compelled to over-share. Help as much as you feel comfortable with. I don’t always feel Lebanese, but today I’m proud more than ever to be Lebanese. 🇱🇧 - @aminmusaphoto on Instagram

... در آغاز «عکس» بود/ سیفاله صمدیان ... به انسان غارنشین میگویم: میبینم از «نگاه کردن» به «دیدن» رسیدهای، این یعنی «عکاسی». میپرسد: عکاسی دیگر چیست؟ جواب میدهم: همان حسی که با چشمهایت شکار کردهای، البته اگر بتوانی یکجوری آنرا حفظ کنی. حرفم تمام نشده تکه ذغالی برمیدارد و توی غار شروع میکند به«نقاشی». چه فریبی! این که شد فقط یک «نقش» خالی!مگر میشود همه آنچه را که دیدهایم، با این خطها و رنگهای بیروح دوباره دید... از پشتسر شیر گرسنهای را میماند که به مورچهای قناعت کرده! 📍سال ۱۵۰۳ میلادی/ کارگاه نقاشی داوینچی در فاصله کوتاهی که «لئوناردو» از اطاق بیرون میرود، خودم را به «مونالیزا» میرسانم و در گوشش میگویم: این دیگر فقط «نقش» تو نیست، «نفس» تورا هم در آن حبس کردهاند!... 📍پاریس۱۸۲۷ «نیسفور نیپس» میگوید: چند دقیقه دیگر آن شیروانی و خانه کبوتر را روی این ورقه مسی «منعکس» خواهم کرد و اولین عکس تاریخ متولد خواهد شد.میگویم: مبارکمان باشد. ولی کار تو دست کمی از آن نقشگرغارنشین ندارد. آئینه تو هم فقط ظاهر اشیاء را نشان میدهد. 📍سال ۱۹۵۴- یک میدان مین در هندوچین «رابرت کاپا» را میبینم که پشت سر سربازان با دوربین لایکایش آخرین عکس زندگیاش را میگیرد و به طرف تپه سمت راست خود راه میافتد. داد میزنم: رابرت! مواظب باش، آن بالا نرو! من خبر دارم. آنجا یک مین... ولی فریادم در طوفان درون او گم میشود... دوربین کاپا توی دستهای من میافتد و قطرههای خون روی پلکهایم... 📍سال ۱۹۹۴-آتلیه عکاسی آودون ریچارد، کت پدر سرطانیاش را میپوشاند و او را برای چندمین بار جلوی دوربین قرار میدهد. میگویم: از جان این پیرمرد چه میخواهی؟ به پسزمینه سفید اشاره میکند و میگوید: «خلوص روحاش را». 📍سال ۱۹۸۹- معادن طلای برزیل کارگری سراپا گل آلود با کیسهای از خاک طلا بردوش، از آخرین پلهها بالا میآید. میخواهم دستم را دراز کرده و کمکش کنم که «سالگادو» باخشم مهربانی میگوید: بیا این طرف! بگذار«عکس»ام را بگیرم...و صدای شاتر دوربینش در هیاهوی خستگی بردگان محو میشود. 📍سال ۱۹۹۳- تهران دفتر مجله تصویر به عکسهای برسون، کودلکا، یوجین اسمیت، ویلیام كلین، کرتژ، رودچنکو، عباس عطار، هامایا، و...که روی میز اتاق زدهام، نگاه میکنم و با خود میگویم: آیا این عکسها هم با اینهمه قدرت و حس در دورهای نزدیک، شبیه آن نقش غار بهنظر نخواهند آمد و تا بازتاب آن «حس ازلی» چند قرن فاصله داریم؟ سرمقاله شماره ویژه عکاسی مجله تصویر (۱۳۷۳) - @tassvirsal on Instagram

Come eravamo... ✒ Attraverso queste inchieste etnolinguistiche Paul Scheuermeier e Gerhard Rohlfs regalarono un quadro delle condizioni quotidiane di vita e di lavoro della popolazione degli Abruzzi nelle zone rurali indagate, prima delle profonde trasformazioni economiche e sociali avvenute nel secondo dopoguerra con lo sviluppo industriale. È sufficiente osservare queste immagini per delineare il significato profondo dell’impresa compiuta da Paul Scheuermeier e Gerhard Rohlfs, in Abruzzo come altrove. La sensibilità e l’incredibile empatia dei due studiosi riescono infatti a trasformare un’inchiesta linguistica nella narrazione di un viaggio che, anche a distanza di anni, sa cogliere e restituire il volto più autentico del tempo. LO STRETTO NECESSARIO cit. . Linfanzia trascorsa con le mie nonne è forse il periodo più importante della mia vita. Loro mi hanno insegnato e dato tanto ma soprattutto, vivendo lontano, mi hanno messo nella condizione di vivere il viaggio fin da quando ho memoria. Come tutti i figli di immigrati meridionali infatti, sono nata e cresciuta al nord Italia ma con gli usi e costumi del sud. 🍅🍅🍅🍅 Questa fotografia fu scattata da mio padre nei primi del 90 e ritrae la sottoscritta e la più cara amica della mia nonna paterna. La signora parlava un dialetto napoletano che oggigiorno non sento più, arcaico, molto posato e che soprattutto veniva dalla cultura di campagna. Lei e mia nonna infatti erano contadine ed allevatrici di animali e vivevano la terra in maniera molto particolare. Per esempio trovavano e conoscevano rimedi naturali utilizzando erbe e preghiere come gli sciamani delle culture primitive, cose che oggigiorno verrebbero scambiate per ciarlataneria o pacchianeria. Quello che in realtà io ho trovato sempre affascinante era il modo di cucinare e preparare quello che la campagna dava, frutto di tradizioni centenarie che oramai sono perse nel tempo. Oggi giorno capisco la loro pazienza nellaspettare il momento giusto per ogni cosa. 🥖🥖🥖🥖 Inoltre, questa foto per me è importante perché mi ricorda quando da piccola aiutavo mia nonna a cucinare e accudire le gallinelle di casa. Raccoglievo le uova, pulivo il fienile e se ero stanca, mi addormentavo con la testa sul corpo piumoso di unenorme oca bianca che avevo chiamato Nuvola e che si faceva avvicinare solo da me. . So theres this pic that I come across every so often. Ive seen it on docos, movies and on socials. I grew up staring at this photo. The man on the left, directing the people is my grandfather Risati Eteuati. The 2 girls near him are his daughters, my aunts. Ive heard many stories of him, mostly of how much of a great leader and how handsome he was. They were leaving theyre home Tokelau to go to NZ on a scheme NZ had initiated to fight the over population Tokelau was facing in the 70s. They left everything knew, created businesses, communities with broken or no English at all. They felt the fear trusted God and moved anyway. It dawned on me a couple weeks ago. Myself and so many other NZ Pacific people now living in Australia are 2nd generation Pacific people. Our babies are now 1st generation Australians! Our people are always moving, adapting, surviving, feeling the fear, trusting God and moving anyway. Can I encourage someone? Someone feeling terribly afraid of what is ahead but they do want to start something- a business, a book, whatever. Trust in God. Even if you dont believe in Him, if youre tried everything else, may as well try Jesus 🤷🏽♀️. Because like the people in this pic they felt the fear, but they trusted God and moved anyway.
