This famous biblical scene owes its realism to Caravaggios observations of public executions: first of all of Beatrice Cenci, whose portrait was the subject of the previous post, and also of Giordano Bruno that took place the same year. The model for Judith, however, was not Beatrice Cenci but probably the Roman courtesan Fillide Melandroni. In its turn, this painting was of a wide influence, first of all on an Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi, who painted this subject multiple times, and many other artists as well. Judith Beheading Holofernes, ~1599, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Galleria Nazionale dArte Antica, Rome, Italy. #art #beauty #classicart #classicbeauty #classicartbeauty #classicartitaly #italianart #16c #16cart #baroque #barroco #chiaroscuro #tenebrism #Caravaggio @classicartbeauty #красота #классикаискусства #искусство #классика #барокко #караваджо #kunst #kunstwerk #pintura #konst - @classicartbeauty on Instagram

The Virgin and Child with Canon van den Paele portrait. This portrait was also painted by me in 1436. This was painted to show depicts of Van der Paele, a wealthy canon of the Church of Saint Donatian in Bruges, kneeling before the enthroned Virgin and Child. - @jan._van._eyck on Instagram
This portrait of Sarah Churchill (née Jenyns), Duchess of Marlborough, seems to be an original composition by the French-born artist Louis Goupy. Goupy would have been well-placed to access portraits of the Duchess, being a subscriber (from 1711) to the new academy of painting started by Sir Godfrey Kneller in Great Queen Street. Here the duchess is shown in a pose first painted by Kneller in 1708 (Althorp), and later engraved by John Simon (1675-1751). The present portrait differs from Kneller’s version with the duchess’s head more inclined and the inclusion of architectural features – possibly those of the still work-in-progress Blenheim Palace (completed 1725) – in the background. It must pre-date the death of the Duke of Marlborough (1722) but post-date the death of Queen Anne (1714) and may have been painted during the final years of the building of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. - @philip_mould_gallery on Instagram

~ Royal dynasties, The House of Este : Isabelle d’Este in art ~ . Isabella dEste is famous as the most important art patron of the Renaissance. . In painting she had numerous famous artists of the time work for her, including Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Leonardo da Vinci, Andrea Mantegna (court painter until 1506), Perugino, Raphael, Titian, Antonio da Correggio, Lorenzo Costa (court painter from 1509), Dosso Dossi, Francesco Francia, Giulio Romano and many others. For instance her Studiolo in the Ducal Palace was decorated with allegories by Mantegna, Perugino, Costa and Correggio. In parallel she contracted the most important sculptors and medallists of her time, Michelangelo, Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi (LAntico), Gian Cristoforo Romano and Tullio Lombardo, and collected ancient Roman art. . For what concerns writers, she was in contact with Pietro Aretino, Ludovico Ariosto, Pietro Bembo, Baldassare Castiglione, Mario Equicola, Gian Giorgio Trissino and others. In music Isabella sponsored the composers Bartolomeo Tromboncino and Marco Cara and played the lute herself. Unusually, she employed women as professional singers at her court, including Giovanna Moreschi, the wife of Marchetto Cara. . Being a leader of fashion, she ordered the finest clothing, including furs as well as the newest distillations of perfume, which she concocted herself and sent as presents. Her style of dressing in caps and plunging décolletage was imitated throughout Italy and at the French court. . Isabella dEste has been proposed as a plausible candidate for Leonardos Mona Lisa of c. 1503–1506, usually considered a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. Evidence in favor of Isabella as the subject of the famous work includes Leonardos drawing Isabella dEste from 1499 and her letters of 1501–1506 requesting the promised painted portrait; further arguments are the mountains in the background and the armrest as a Renaissance symbol for a portrait of a sovereign. . - @leonoringlaterra_1guia on Instagram

. 🌍 The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, in Oltrarno, contains one of the greatest examples of early Florentine Renaissance painting: the Brancacci Chapel, which miraculously escaped the terrible fire that broke out in 1771. The Chapel is a true pictorial treasure chest, adorned with a cycle of frescoes commissioned in 1424 by Felice Brancacci, a wealthy Florentine merchant and politician, which illustrate the life of St. Peter, protector of the family. The frescoes were made by several hands by Masolino da Panicale, by his pupil Masaccio and by Filippino Lippi. A little tip: Masaccio inserted himself, his friend Masolino, Leon Battista Alberti and Filippo Brunelleschi in the panel depicting the Raising of the Son of Theophilus and St. Peter Enthroned, which you can admire here. #firenzecard #firenze #igersfirenze #igerstoscana #instaitalia #instaflorence #firenzemadeintuscany #Florence #visitflorence #firenzeturismo #experienceflorence #feelflorence #cappellabrancacci #chiesadelcarmine #oltrarno #piazzadelcarmine #leonbattistaalberti #brunelleschi - @firenzecard on Instagram

In February 1511, a magnificent jousting tournament was held at Westminster to celebrate the birth of Prince Henry, the son of King Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon. The king recorded the festivities by commissioning the famous Westminster Tournament Roll, a sixty-foot-long pictorial narrative executed in painted vellum. The scene shown here depicts the young Henry VIII jousting before Katherine, who applauds as Henry breaks his lance on his opponents helmet—a winning hit. The king evidently used the tournament to declare his love for Katherine, as he jousted under the name Coeur Loyal (Loyal Heart) and is pictured using a horse trapper adorned with golden hearts and the letter K. As we all know, however, the couples joy turned out to be short-lived, as the infant Prince Henry died less than two weeks after the tournaments close. ________ Photos: College of Arms / Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 4.0) #medieval #history #middleages #art #design #love #england #tudor #henryviii - @middle_ages_history on Instagram

OLD MASTERS FOR PRESENT TIMES by Dr. Rosamund Garrett Today concludes our pandemic-inspired series of reflections on works in the Brooks permanent collection. We hope you’ve enjoyed these glimpses of beauty in art for these distanced days and uncertain times. Though the dress in this portrait may at first appear simple, the lavish materials on show – red silk, fine lace and black velvet – indicate that this woman may be the wife of a wealthy merchant. The color is a further reflection of her wealth, as black was difficult and expensive to dye, but also appealed to the more austere aesthetic of Protestants. The woman is guiding the viewer to what she wants you to see; her piety, her social standing, her wealth, and her beloved companion, a spaniel with little silver bells sewn to its collar. The COVID-19 lockdown has brought home to many the value and joy of having a pet by our sides. Share a picture of your lockdown companion in the comments! “Dreamsongs - From Medicine to Demons to Artificial Intelligence” the upcoming exhibition that I’ve curated for @colnaghi1760 that opens on October 6th. 😊 #dreamsongs The starting point came from one of the first recorded dreams in western civilisation written by #cicero called ‘The Dream of Scipio’ which inspired many artists and thinkers from Saint Jerome, Raphael and Mozart all the way to Arthur C. Clarke. The focus of the exhibition is the exploration of how dreams have been depicted in art from antiquity to present day, told through over a hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, objects and multimedia works. Here’s a few of the works that are included in the exhibition: 1. Tricephalous Christ. Circa 1500, oil on panel. 2. Kiki Smith, Transmission, 2016, Bronze 3. _____* _____ #art #arte #bologna #arthistory #palazzofava #ercolederoberti #genusbononiae #politticogriffoni #francescodelcossa #exhibition #griffonihomecoming #polyptich #lariscopertadiuncapolavoro - @_arteecultura_ on Instagram

To prelepo sliko Sv. — #DetajlNarodne (3/3) #NarodnaGalerija — Quentin Massys (Leuven, 1465/1466 — Antwerpen, 1530), Sv. Attrib. Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio, Madonna and Child, tempera, oil and gold ground/ panel, 85.7 x 56.8 cm. . . It was recently sold at Christie’s Old Masters Day Sale (7 December 2018, lot 172) as « Attributed to Bartolomeo Caporali & studio », est. 30-50,000£, sold 31,250£. . . It took nearly 30 years, but the Italian police have recovered Pinturicchio’s missing masterpiece Madonna and Child. The Italian police’s cultural heritage protection unit found the painting, which was stolen from a private home in 1990, but have revealed little about its whereabouts since. It will soon be returned to its owners, but first it’s going on view at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia, Pinturicchio’s hometown. The work is going on view alongside works by two other artists of the Perugian school, Bartolomeo Caporali and Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, under whom Pinturicchio is believed to have studied. “This recovery demonstrates, once again, the increasingly transnational character of criminal activities in this sector,” said Fabrizio Parrulli, commander of the unit, at the painting’s unveiling. He called on law enforcement in other countries to create “a consolidated system of international cooperation to effectively combat crimes against our cultural heritage.” Born Bernardino di Betto, Pinturicchio earned his nickname, which means “little painter,” because of his diminutive stature. The artist worked as an assistant to Pietro Perugino on the more famous painter’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Today, the two artists are among the stars of the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria’s collection. Later, Pinturicchio was commissioned to create work of his own at the Vatican, painting frescoes in a suite of six rooms in the Bogia Apartments in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, now part of the Vatican Library. Five of the six paintings can still be seen today. “Madonna col Bambino attribuita a Pinturicchio” is on view at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, Corso Vannucci, 19, Perugia, Italy, August 8, 2019–January 26, 2020. In 1865 John Everett Millais painted “Joan of Arc”. It shows the figure of a young girl kneeling in prayer, holding in both her hands a heavy sword and with a battle helmet at her side. Wearing a half-suit of armour and chain mail, and a red skirt-clad, Jeanne Darc, also called the ‘Maid of Orleans’, is shown kneeling in prayer. From the age of 14 she had claimed to hear the voices of Saints Michael, Catherine of Alexandria, and Margaret of Antioch, all encouraging her to fight the English and save France. Most of the people to whom she spoke about these supernatural experiences were incredulous, but one local commander believed her when she described the holy voices that had addressed her. The story then reached the French dauphin, who was also persuaded that the voices that she continued to hear were messages sent from God. She was therefore allowed to ride at the head of the French army that departed from Blois in 1429, wearing armour so brightly polished that it shone white in the sun. She led the French troops into battle, and successfully relieved the English siege of the city of Orléans. There followed a further successful campaign in the Loire valley, and then in July she conducted the dauphin to his coronation as Charles VII at Rheims. Having in effect salvaged the French military position at a crucial stage in the Hundred Years War, Joan attempted to withdraw, but was not allowed to return to her home. Wounded and defeated in battle near Paris, she then joined in an attempt to relieve Compiègne, which was under siege by the Burgundians. Captured, she was sold by the Duke of Burgundy to the English. Imprisoned and accused of witchcraft, she was tried by a court of French churchmen. She conducted her own defence, but was undone by the cunning arguments of the Bishop of Beauvais. Convicted as a heretic, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake at Rouen on 30 May 1431, her ashes being thrown into the Seine. In 1456, she was exonerated by an ecclesiastical court, and in 1920 she was canonized by Pope Benedict XV. . . . . . . #joanofarc #millais #hero #arthistory #historyofart #historiadelarte #muse #model #preraphaelite #artwork #preraphaelites #rossetti - @d.g.rossetti on Instagram

🌎Wednesday is #SistineUnseen.⠀⠀ Today we focus on Ghirlandaios fresco depicting the Vocation of the Apostles.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 🎣The story is divided into three episodes: on the left in the background, Peter and Andrew, intent on gathering nets are called by Jesus to follow Him and become fishers of men. On the right Christ calls to James and John, sons of Zebedee, who are on the boat.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⚓ In the foreground, the culmination of this ideal narrative triangle are Peter and Andrew are now kneeling to receive the solemn blessing of Christ. The total concentration of the two apostles, and the fact that neither of them look Jesus in the eyes, makes one think that Ghirlandaio wanted to suggest a process of interior transformation in these men.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 🔎The lakeside landscape with gray, white and silver tones, fades towards a background illuminated by the light of dawn. On the slopes that enclose the sea of Galilee are two cities: on the right is #Florence and on the left is unspecified urban center with Flemish features.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ 🇮🇹Mercoledì è #SistineUnseen.

👉https://www.uffizi.it/opere/annunciazione-e-i-santi-ansano-e-massima • 🌍E N G #MyMondayWords #LANGUAGE /ˈlaNGɡwij/ The faculty to communicate thoughts and express feelings by means of a system of verbal or graphic signs. Faculty of expressing through other signs. How many ways are there to communicate?Probably many of us instinctively think of voice, words that can be spoken and heard. Yet our body can speak a more articulate language. It is a lesson that art has been teaching for centuries. Simone Martini (1333) writes with gold the words that the Angel addresses to Mary, but her apparent reaction shows much more than words can do.We may call it upset, perhaps reluctance.Yet nothing are more meaningful than her half-closed eyes, her voice apparently stuck in her throat, the movement of her right hand to close herself up in her cloak as well as the left one lingering on the pages of a book. Last week there was the #InternationalDayofSignLanguages, which reminds us that many ways to communicate exist: not only sounds, but also gestures that can often tell much more. - @uffizigalleries on Instagram

- @pinacoteca_bologna on Instagram

The Lombards, or also called the Longobards, were one of the Germanic tribes renowned for conquering most of the Italian Peninsula in the 6th century and establishing an independent kingdom there afterwards. Originated from the Scandinavia, they moved to the area coinciding with modern Austria by the end of the 5th century, and became Byzantine allies after their ruler Audoin signed a treaty with the Emperor Justinian in 541. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Subsequently, the Lombards were convinced to help defeat one of the Byzantines enemies, the Gepids. Wars were frequently fought for years until in 565 when the new Lombards king, Alboin, completely annihilated the Gepid kingdom by joining forces with the Avars tribe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About three years later, King Alboin decided to lead the Lombard migration into Italy. They easily took city after city with little or no opposition since there were only small amount of Byzantine army left. By 572, Alboin had subjugated most of Italy, establishing his capital at Pavia. Then, he divided the country into 36 territories known as duchies, with each presided over by a duke who reported directly to the king. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately for Alboin, shortly after his conquests, he was assassinated by conspirators led by his wife Rosamund. The reason why Rosamund plotting the murder of her own husband will be explained in my next posts! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Assassination of Alboin, King of the Lombards, a 19th century painting by Charles Landseer. • #AssassinationOfAlboin #Part1 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #worldhistory #historylesson #historyfacts #history #historical #historychannel #historia #historic #historyinpictures - @worldhistorychannel on Instagram
Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels. Also know as #Michaelmas or the Feast of the Archangels, this holiday has long marked the christian equivalent of the autumn equinox. As darker nights and colder days approach, the celebration of St. Michael (one of the principal angelic warriors) is associated with protection in times of trial and darkness. Following the Medieval tradition of giving Michaelmas daisies as a symbol of farewell, we invite you to bid farewell to the previous season and welcome a new period of growth, transformation, and safety. — “Virgin of the Rocks” by Leonardo da Vinci • “Saint Michael Archangel” by Giovanni Battista Moroni • “The Annunciation” by Pinturicchio • “Archangel Raphael and Tobit” by Titian - @trinitywallst on Instagram

- @parco_regionale_del_partenio on Instagram

The Palace of Versailles is a royal chateau located in Versailles, France (about 20 kilometers southwest of Paris). In 1624, Louis XIII originally built it as a hunting lodge for himself, but it was fairly basic for a king so he decided to rebuild it in 1631. The more extravagant construction began in 1661 and ended in 1698, 37 years before King Louis XIV passed away in 1715. He wanted to turn the hunting lodge (picture 3 is a sketch of that) into an over-the-top palace whose purpose was to impress. Of course for a palace spanning over 87,728,720 square feet, there were many architects who contributed to the project, including Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin Mansart, Andre le Notre (landscape artist), Charles Le Brun, Jean Berain the Elder, Andre-Charles Boulle, Charles Cressent, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Francois Lemoyne, and Juste-Aurele Meissonnier. However, the original architect for the hunting lodge was Jacques Lemercier. Le Vau is the main contributing architect that ran the project under Louis XIV. - @palaceofversaillesut on Instagram

The present works, depicting George II and Queen Caroline, are two such examples and were painted in c.1728 to celebrate their coronation. According to the art historian George Vertue (1683-1756), George II, who had little passion for art or literature, disliked having his portrait taken and refused to sit for many of the leading artists of the day. As a consequence, few artists had life-sittings with the King, and many of the poor-quality images that were produced in England during his reign derived from a prototype by Sir Godfrey Kneller of 1716, painted when the sitter was Prince of Wales. Even William Kent, the architect and painter who succeeded Charles Jervas as the Kings painter was refused a sitting with the monarch. Fortunately for Jervas, however, whose studio produced this pair of portraits, his talents did not go unnoticed. Indeed, according to Vertue both George and Caroline sat to the artist in 1728. This may be the same sitting that George gave to Jervas in August 1728 for a portrait to hang in The Guildhall, London where it remains to this day. - @philip_mould_gallery on Instagram

Under the title MADONNA CHILDREN the Grafikkabinett in the Kunstmuseum Basel Hauptbau will be showing a hitherto unexplored facet of the museums history by means of the rich archive material. On view until 24 January 2021. Encouraged by Margaret, Princess of Hesse and near the Rhine, the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt enabled 20 Darmstadt children aged between seven and thirteen to spend four weeks a year in Davos between 1953 and 1958. The new loans to be granted for this purpose formed a payment for the loan of the so-called “Darmstadt Madonna” by Hans Holbein the Younger to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On their journey from Darmstadt to Davos, the Madonna Children made regular stops at the Kunstmuseum Basel to view the painting. In addition to the Dresden painting, however, there was another version, which - after its later place of storage – is called the Darmstadt Madonna, also to distinguish the two versions from each other. In the 19th century, the question of which of the two versions was the original gave rise to the so-called Holbein dispute among artists, art historians and laymen. While artists and laymen clearly saw the original in the Dresden version, art historians finally came to the conclusion that the Darmstadt painting was the original. Meanwhile, the Dresden copy is attributed to Bartholomäus Sarburgh. However, the widespread assumption that the Dresden painting is Holbeins original may have caused Basel councillor Karl Sarasin to commission a copy of this original in Dresden, which was made by Julius Grüder, a proven copyist and Holbein expert. #KunstmuseumBasel #Madonnenkinder CREDIT: Madonna of Darmstadt (also: Madonna of the Mayor Meyer), Hans Holbein the Younger, 1526/1528, oil on coniferous wood (?), 146.5 × 102 cm, Würth Collection, Johanniter Church (Schwäbisch Hall) - @kunstmuseumbasel on Instagram
𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐲𝐧 & 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 I covered the family relation between Queen Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, 2nd and 5th wife of Henry VIII. BUT…sorry for yelling…I think Henry wanted to keep it in the family, because Anne wasn’t only the cousin of Cat H…But of Jane Seymour as well. Lets go back to the early 15th century, where a certain 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘺 was married twice. Her 1st husband 𝘚𝘪𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘛𝘺𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘺 and her had only one child, little girl, 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘺𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘺. 💗💪💪 #laculturanonsiferma #iorestoacasa #umbriaterremusei Info @museomontone . . #andratuttobene #culturaperta #scoprendolumbria #museiitaliani #yallersumbria #umbrialovers #umbriagram #museumgram #umbria_illife #italian_places #beniculturali30 #umbriatiamo #museumlover #artlovers #masterpieces #culture #capolavori #artenelmondo #ars_sacra #tesori_italiani #volgoarte - @umbriaterremusei on Instagram

⭐Tagga con @finestresullarte⭐ #beniculturali30 #culturalheritage30 #exploringitaly #ilikeitaly #ig_italia #igers_italia #igersitalia #visititaly #vivoitalia #yallersitalia #ig_europe #ig_worldclub #igworldclub_museums #italiait #finestresullarte #Bruges #janvaneyck - @finestresullarte on Instagram
