Then And Now

I’m so excited to have been chosen as part of @atlasofhumanity.official this year! It gives me enormous joy to know that one of my personal favorite photographs will be exhibited in Paris in November, among so many talented photographers. The portrait is of a young Syrian refugee taken in Beirut few years back, whose face and expression captivated me deeply. I often wonder about her whereabouts and her life right now... For an artist, getting her work recognized is one of the most pivotal moments of all time. To be clear, that is not why I do it, although being able to move someone with my work makes it that much more worthwhile. And to be able to move/inspire others, the work must be visible to the world. . If you are an artist, a creator, or a doer of any sort, I’m sure you know the road is never easy. For example, I have applied to Atlas of Humanity a few times before and didn’t get selected. I kept going, because I truly believe in the project and really wanted to be part of it. Persistence paid off. . For every contest, exhibit or a publication, there are hundreds of others I didn’t get selected for. There are plenty of rejection letters in my message inbox, ones I’ve chosen not to look at again. For every time I “make it”, there are plenty of times I didn’t. Those moments don’t get shared here on social media for obvious reasons, but perhaps they should. They’re as much part of the journey as the other stuff is. . I think the key is to keep going, keep believing in your work and in your mission and remembering that art is a very subjective endeavor. It wants to be made for making sake. If it makes us better, deeper humans, the its purpose has already been fulfilled. I will keep making my art and sharing what I want to share because I don’t see it any other way. . Before protestors took over Tahrir Square, the strip of land on the Tigris River was restricted and off limits to the public. Since protests began, though, demonstrators have taken to claiming it as their own space, with sand brought in and the area being used as a recreational space. 2. Hussein Al Araby (center right, in green), 32, plays a protest anthem he wrote as his friends sing along in their makeshift tent in Tahrir Square, in Baghdad, Iraq. February 2020. Hussein, who had a difficult upbringing, found in rap, and particularly political rap, a way to express himself. I started writing about how bad our situation was, as young Iraqis, says Hussein, whose influences range Tupac to other hip hop artists. Rescatan un pequeño Gato Montés tras caer en una trampa metálica Ocurrió en Aluminé donde los guardafaunas neuquinos lograron recuperarlo de su estado crítico de salud. Recuerdan que los carnívoros silvestres nos ofrecen servicios ecológicos al controlar las poblaciones de roedores, conejos y liebres.   Aluminé es noticia nuevamente por el rescate de un joven gato montés (Leopardus geoffroyi) que quedó atrapado en trampas metálicas. Una vez más la comunidad demuestra la gran red de personas que piensan la atención y contención de la fauna silvestre. En estos contextos se renueva una pregunta muy recurrente por estos lares ¿Somos capaces como seres humanos de compartir el territorio con otras especies? El animal fue víctima de dos cepos que le produjeron graves heridas al prenderse uno en cada pata trasera. Esto sumado al cuadro de hipotermia generado por las bajas temperaturas y las horas que permaneció inmóvil en la nieve, le generó un estado crítico de salud. El pasado jueves 9 de julio, una vecina del paraje de Abra Ancha avisó al equipo de Guardafaunas que había encontrado un Gato Montés atrapado en dos trampas que ella había ubicado para capturar a un ejemplar de Visón Americano, mamífero exótico que también visita gallineros. Sin embargo el hallazgo fue otro, el felino correspondía a un macho joven muy delgado que debe haberse visto forzado a acercarse a asentamientos humanos para buscar comida. Según comentó la vecina, el mismo Gato Montés ya le había atrapado gallinas antes. Ante el aviso se hizo presente Martín Salazar, de la Dirección Provincial de Fauna, la veterinaria de la Reserva Natural Urbana Quilquelil, Carolina Marull, que cuenta con una vasta experiencia en manejo de fauna silvestre y el Director del Museo municipal El Charrúa, Titi Ricciuto, siempre disponible para estos desafíos Se encontró al Gato Montés con graves heridas en sus dos patas traseras y en estado de hipotermia. Fue sedado y medicado en el mismo gallinero usando instrumental y medicamentos provistos por la veterinaria Gilda Vallejos. Luego fue trasladado a la casa de Titi, la cual ya ha sido refugio de animales silvestres para rehabilitarlo y devolverlo a su hábitat - @laangosturadigital on Instagram

Someone sent me this picture that was taken by the @courierjournal in Injustice Square Park in Louisville right after we all learned of the grand jury verdict in the Breonna Taylor case. I walked away and stood behind a tree to give space to the many Black women who were consoling one another, crying and just being in full outrage. I sobbed too. Not because I was shocked by the verdict. But because of the trauma, hurt, brokenness that our country continues to inflict on Black people, especially Black women. Because of the message it sent to Black women & girls around the country and world. I want to say to my Black sisters - you are worthy. You are beautiful. You are necessary. You deserve to live in a country that respects you. A country where you can live in dignity and safety. We often tell you how strong and resilient you are and I have come to understand over the many years organizing that it’s unjust for us to always seek you for strength. You deserve to be vulnerable, to take breaks, to even be weak sometimes because this country has continued to wear you down. I have evolved over the years, made many mistakes, & continue to be a student in this movement. I yearn to be more than an ally, but an accomplice. I want to help carry some of your burdens although I will never ever know what it feels like to be a Black woman. I want to alleviate some of your labor seeing how much you give to this movement and your beloved communities. I see you. I love you. I am committed to you. To your families. To your communities. I know on a very deep and fundamental level that not only do you deserve full human rights - I also know that when you get full human rights and are fully free, we will all be free. I am often ashamed of living in a country where you have to fight so hard just to live, but I still believe, I still have this voice inside of me that says we are close. That freedom is close. I began solo traveling in 2015. While I haven’t covered all 36 states in Nigeria, I have been to all the regions in the country. However, I am always in awe whenever I travel to the Northern part of Nigeria. While Nigerians are quite colorful, there is an unmatched vibrancy that exists in the Northern part of Nigeria. People told Shabana only boys could stay in school. She asked Why? She saw the simple truth that every child deserves an education - and got back in the classroom as soon as she could. . “I came to Kabul from Jalalabad and now we live here. There was war. Our life was hard there. We could not go downtown and do shopping. Our homes were up on the mountains. . They brought the bodies of the soldiers and there were black bags filled with blood. We saw them and it made us very sad. I pray to God no one else has such experience. . We had to stay at home because of the bombings. It was awful. They would just start firing out of nowhere and we had to quit school. . We had no choice but to leave. Girls could no longer attend schools. None of us could do our studies. Boys could still go but girls could not. . The bullets were coming to our houses, people were getting shot, so my parents decided to leave. . We were upset that we are leaving our own home and going to a different place. We lived for almost six days in a tent with our clothes tied up in boxes. . We were so happy that school was built for us and we can study well here. We have a beautiful school here. They give us pens, notebooks, school bags and all the things we need, so we are very happy because we receive everything we need, and we study well. . Here we can go to school and live a normal and happy life, living at a safe home. . It is my hope to study well in the future and work on my strengths to become a doctor, or a teacher or anything else. . I hope that peace comes to our country and everyone lives a happy life. War should be stopped, and peace should come to Afghanistan. The boys and girls should continue their education and focus on their studies. They will be the teachers of the future, the doctors of the future. . - - - . Girls are less likely to attend school than boys. In areas blighted by conflict - like Shabana’s in Afghanistan - their chances are even lower. But every child on earth should get an education. As a result of recent hostilities in northern Afghanistan, over 75,000 people were forced to flee their homes. The most humbling and heartwarming experience. A visit to the beautiful country of Malawi where @mindfulchefuk has donated over 1.2million school meals via our charity partner @onefeedstwo - for every meal we sell, we donate one to a child in poverty. For @washingtonpost - No one told Jairo Gomez’s family they had to leave until the billows of smoke reached the front door of their mobile home. Gomez is part of a large Latino community here in Phoenix, where many of his extended relatives from Mexico also live. Nearly half of the Phoenix-Talent School District is Hispanic, said Lucy Brossard, a bilingual executive assistant with the school district. Many Latino migrants settled in the Rogue Valley in the early 1990s to work in the nearby pear and peach orchards, Brossard said. They are the backbone of the workforce in the area’s restaurants, food processing plants and wineries. And many of them have settled in multigenerational homes in trailer parks, especially since the economic crisis of 2008. Just down the road from Gomez, his sister, Beatriz Gomez, 41, said the majority of people in her mobile home park were Latino. Dr. Zhenia Fuentes, a veteran pulmonologist and coordinator of the tuberculosis clinic at the Dr. José Ignacio Baldó Hospital, examines Jesús Contreras, 29, during rounds with patients in the men’s tuberculosis ward of the hospital. Jesús died three days later. The Venezuela government’s tuberculosis prevention and control program was once among the most robust in the hemisphere, with the nation boasting one of the lowest rates of infection in Latin America, experts say. But as the country has fallen apart under President Nicolás Maduro, who took office in 2013, the government has let the tuberculosis threat slip from its m control, losing decades’ worth of gains. Doctors have also observed the return of particularly complicated varieties of the disease, as well as more cases involving strains that are highly resistant to drug therapies. “All these forms of tuberculosis that we forget about are starting to reappear,” Dr. Jacobus de Waard said. Experts fear that the nation is teetering on the brink of a tuberculosis epidemic that could spill over its borders as Venezuelans flee in record numbers to escape the economic and political crisis, potentially exporting the illness with them. Today is World Tuberculosis Day, observed each year on March 24th to build global awareness of the disease. Happiness in a small Indian village. I saw dad arrive by motorbike from the countryside carrying three heart balloons 🎈🎈. The man was in a hurry to return to his family and did not deal with the acacia trees and the torrid heat that here in India sometimes even melts the streets. This month marks the third year of the Rohingya Refugee Crisis - frequently deemed an ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslim minority at the hands of the Myanmar military and Buddhist extremists. Resulting in close to 10,000 deaths and the influx of over 800,000 refugees into Bangladesh fleeing genocide, the Rohingya today still live in the same temporary shelters. Little has changed as the Rohingya continue in a state of limbo unable to work while living at the mercy of Bangladesh authorities in the world’s largest refugee camp. - @mikekaichen on Instagram

- Refugee Crisis

Shes not just a human, shes a super hero. This is Noah, she is my sweet friend from Syria. She walked with me everywhere I went, we protested together, had lunch together, took a shower in the sea together. We laughed, cried and hugged. She looooved taking photos, so I taught her how the camera worked. She walked all around with the camera taking some photos of her family and they were actually quite good. Next time I see her Ill give her a tiny camera with which she can practise. I would love her to go to school instead of following me around - which I love but which isnt something she should be doing. I would love her to be playing on a playground not a military shooting range. I would love her to be a child again, not watching her parents being worried and listening to them trying to find ways to get to safety. I would love her to grow up like all the children in the Netherlands, in a safe, privileged and friendly environment. Instead she lives in a camp with no facilities whatsoever. But still, she smiles, she gives, she loves. She finds the good in the bad and the happy in the sad. She inspires me day in day out. My heart breaks everytime I hear her voice, the voice of a little girl growing up too fast. There are thousands of artisans working in textiles across Afghanistan, but two of the most popular crafts in the region of Bamiyan are barak and namad. Namad is a non-woven textile produced by repeatedly pressing and rolling tufts of sheep wool soaked in hot water. Barak is made by weaving lambswool on a simple ground loom, then pressing the fabric in a large pot filled with hot water. Both traditions are deeply rooted in the communities of shepherds living and working across the high-altitude valleys of the Bamiyan region. Today is the last day of my 30s. It has been an incredible decade of growth and becoming the person I am today. I’ve spent a lot of time this past month thinking about who I was, who I’ve been and who I am now. There isn’t much I regret about the last 10 years and there is so much I am grateful for. So today I’m celebrating the two groups of people who have most influenced who I have become in the last decade. These women have more strength than I could ever show in words and so much gentleness and care for their neighbors. inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.⁣ ⁣ ‎إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ‎⁣ ⁣ my grandmother passed away an hour ago in jordan and i’m completely devastated. ⁣ ⁣ i remember the last time i saw her in the summer of 2018. on my last day i came over to say goodbye to her and kiss her before leaving to the airport. she said “ameer come in, come in” and when i walked in she surprised me with a goodbye meal. my favorite batata wa bayd. my aunt was telling me that jiddah hasn’t cooked in years because of her age but went out of her way to make the meal for me before i left.⁣ ⁣ i took this photo of her when we visited my aunts house earlier. she never allows anyone to take her photo, but she told me she wanted a picture by the sunset. ⁣ ⁣ subhanallah. may Allah swt put her in the highest ranks of jannah. please read fatiha for my grandmother. she took care of me, my sister and brother when we young. - @snake on Instagram

Mina, the daughter of a cellmate, helps Fatema expose the long scar on her left forearm which is a sign of self harm. She doesnt remember what had happened but from what she was told by other incarcerated women, a glass broke in on of the rooms and next thing they know she had picked up a piece, slashing her forearm open. She received 25 stitches. . Fatema was as young as Mina was when she was married off to her cousin, who was addicted to different substances. He used to beat her repeatedly in her head, so frequently that it has left her impaired for life. “I used to eat spoiled food and expose myself to the cold so that I get sick and die. I was hoping death would free me from the miserable life I had. The abuse went on until I couldn’t stand his cruelty anymore, I went crazy and strangled him.” Click the link in our bio for the whole story. . This powerful series by Iranian-Canadian photographer @kianahayeri was originally published in a @nytimes story titled “They Killed Their Husbands. Now In Prison, They Feel Free.” This visual report takes a look at the lives of nearly 20 imprisoned women in Herat, Afghanistan, found guilty of murdering their husbands after years of abuse. In many cases, these women were married as minors. She found that many of these women’s lives were dominated by fear, but years of physical and verbal abuse had transformed that fear into anger. They were so tired of being afraid that their instinct to survive drove them to kill. By the time Kiana met them, imprisoned and facing lengthy sentences, they had become different people entirely. “All these women were full of emotions, resilience, life and most importantly hope,” Kiana said. Still COVID -19 has seen a rise in domestic violence worldwide, “In a place like Afghanistan, a country where most of its population was already suffering from some form of depression, a level of PTSD, or other mental illnesses, the pandemic has only worsened the situation. Atlas Girls In our tradition, our daughters do not leave the village, they go to school until the end of primary school and then help with household chores until the day they get married says the village representative. In the photo, little girls can be seen learning the Quran at the Quranic school in the village of Tizili. They dream of their future but in a few years, most of them, if not all, will leave school and start doing household chores until they get married. Mountainous areas are home to more than 8 million people, most of whom are living in dire conditions in more than 10,000 small villages. Thousand-year-old villages suffer from the harshness of winter, precarious social and economic circumstances, and the growing effects of climate change. This movie has been in my watchlist for almost a year now and I regret for not watching it earlier.. The pathos of the film carried throughout made my heart heavy.. Hi there! This is me with baby Myra and Ikram with 2 year old Maram. In August I met this family for the first time and started following them on their journey to safety and stability. They started this journey running away from torture and war. Their journey took a wrong turn on Lesvos where baby Myra is now in the hospital due to infections. One week ago I wrapped my last day at @we.are.alight - and it’s taken several days (and I’m sure many more) to wrap my mind around the bigness of this moment. The past almost 6 years have been one wild, wondrous, action-packed, joy-filled, and sometimes incredibly challenging adventure. I’ve had the privilege of working on issues close to my heart and sharing the stories of so many different wonderful people I’ve met along the way, who have made navigating those challenges worth it and then some. This job has taken me from Minneapolis to Congo to El Salvador to Turkey to Sudan to Somalia and beyond, but in those places it’s always been the generosity of my colleagues and now dear friends that have kept me afloat and make this change so dang hard.
