Back in April, we launched the Angaza Project, Kakenyas Dreams emergency response to the COVID-19 crisis. Through the Angaza Project, we deliver care packages containing vital supplies including food, feminine hygiene products, study materials, and solar lights and radios for distance learning to each of our students households. In May, we distributed the first round of care packages to our girls and their families. Another round of care packages was distributed in July, and our third round of distributions is happening now! The floods and muslide in Chesegon, West Pokot County in Kenya have had devastating effects. The community has lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. The mudslide has left the community without water, and in unsanitary conditions heightening the communitys vulnerability to COVID-19.We, therefore, gave water cans and handwashing stations. Alongside the cans, we also gave water treatment chemicals to protect from water borne diseases. Women and adolescent girls have special needs that are often hard to meet during a crisis. Today we are partnering with the Sisters in the Benue State Daudu IDP camp in Nigeria to provide food, sanitization and hygiene products, and trainings on COVID prevention practices. This IDP camp that the Sisters chose to support was 2-4 hours away from them, but they recognized the importance of serving this community given their remote location. Aside from providing food relief (rice, beans, tomatoes, seasonings) and hygiene products (liquid and laundry soap, face masks and hand sanitizers), the team of Sisters also conducted COVID prevention/awareness sessions in the camp leaning on printed In Our Hands posters in English and Hausa, to guide the session and conversations. “The Sisters were happy to receive financial support to serve the remote IDP communities. De 6-jarige Khosi groeide op in onzekerheid. De onstabiele jeugd met veel verhuizingen en het verlies van zijn moeder, zorgde voor veel angst. Khosi’s oom, waar hij nu met zijn 4 broertjes en zusjes woont, is werkloos. In samenwerking met Mount Olive werd Khosi begin dit jaar aangemeld voor het Early Child Development programma, waardoor hij ingeschreven kon worden voor de basisschool. Ook krijgt Khosi dagelijks huiswerkbegeleiding en voedzame maaltijden. Door rouwbegeleiding lukt het Khosi om het verlies van zijn moeder een plekje te geven. Orange Babies is ontzettend trots dat Khosi, zijn 4 broertjes en zusjes, inmiddels allemaal naar school gaan en Khosi niet langer angstig is maar een mooie toekomst tegemoet gaat.🧡 Door Covid19 zijn de scholen gesloten, en zoals je uit dit verhaal kunt opnemen is dat cruciaal voor de ontwikkeling van Khosi en zijn familie. During this time of Covid-19, she revises study materials she received from AWR. “I am glad to be in the AWR program because I got study materials while other pupils in my community didn’t get any. Thanks for all the amazing feedback about my @nytimestravel Malawi photo essay. Lots of questions about how I behave around kids when I’m working - I suppose these will give you a bit of an idea of that. (Thankfully I have reason to stick to Malawi, which means you don’t need to watch my street dance-off with a group of kids aged 3-8 in Karamoja from a few years ago.) 🤣 Also, a lot of questions about things like consent. This is a tricky subject, not least because our understanding of what that means doesn’t necessarily translate that well. The sheer number of people we come across (especially kids, whom I often photograph for their pleasure more than my own), sometimes not knowing until years later if a photograph will be used for anything, makes having any kind of written consent from everyone who appears in any single picture impossible in practical terms, as does things like writing down names (although I do this whenever it is feasible, and certainly if I engage in a one-on-one conversation and then take portrait photographs of that person). Having said that, I - and most other photographers I know - don’t tend to photograph people (and kids in particular) without first having asked for permission, and I generally don’t enter a school or a village without a chaperone of sorts - a teacher, chief, parent, or project employee. I always want my visits to be appreciated, so the thought of causing discomfort or making anyone upset by my actions would certainly be more important than taking a particular photo, no matter how good I think it might be. We have to be human first, photographers second, and as always: be respectful. And if everyone assumes that the intentions of others are good - and let’s face it, they usually are - then most situations end up being very pleasant. (Also, vast majority of people I’ve come across on my travels absolutely love being photographed, so it really is a win-win if done in the right way.) The GWD Foundation made their very first official outing to Eyulor Village, Urue-Offong Oruko LGA, Akwa Ibom State on July 13th, 2020. Although the weather wasn’t genial, we thank God it was successful. We loved the scenery of the children, mothers and fathers who are residents of the community. They were so delighted to have us around. We shared our little token of love to them as their faces lit with joy and their smiles made the objectives of our foundation come alive. It has 3 tyres hence a tricycle. They charge 1gh and above depending on your location ( +1gh only, no pesewas) If you enter it from your room to your gate, its 1gh😂....lol But some riders would want to cheat you🤨. 🛺If you are well dressed, some will overcharge 🛺if you cant speak the local dilect, some will overcharge you. 🛺if you are speaking big English, some will overcharge you. 🛺But if you are a fine girl like me,😌 you can always coax them and pay less( i do that often)🤣. Roatán is a beautiful island located in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Ecotourism has been an important source of income for islanders on this small but vibrant island. Coxen Hole is the largest city in Roatán. Roatán has drawn in travelers from across the globe with its mountainous inner region and miles of sandy white beaches on its shores. Even more beautiful then it’s stunning views are the beautiful faces of the children of Coxen Hole. This year with the pandemic tourism has ceased and there is no money coming into the island. This of course has created a financial burden for many islanders. #GlobalGirlLife Foundation is raising money to help our friend Estrellita Connor who has been taking care of many of the children in her neighborhood of Coxen Hole and MudHole. #GlobalGirlLife Foundation is raising money to help with the task of nourishing these children so that when school starts they are there to receive the education needed to grow into strong self actualized individuals who will be directly impacted by the love and generosity of a global community. This last week has been an experience I will never forget 😍 I now know why Malawi is called the heart of Africa ❤️ . I’ve never smiled so much but at the same time been at a loss for parents & children who have so little (despite their generosity & big smiles). These feeding programmes make such a huge difference in these children’s lives, for most of the children it can be their only meal of the day. Through @onefeedstwo and @mindfulchefuk the meals we donate really do help these families every single day. . From being a human climbing frame to sharing porridge with Stellia (who’s the same age as Sienna) I have memories that will last a lifetime. We may be on the other side of the 🌍but we’ve seen in person the positive impact we can have. . Photo by @eva.colomer As we were driving to the north east of Uganda, in the Karamojong area, we happened to stop at a little group of houses by the bumpy road. After negociating with the local chief who was dressed in the most bizarre attaire possible ( a sort of military jacket and matching cap) , we agreed to camp next to the houses. The curiosity was mutual, obviously. Slowly, slowly came the children, then some older boys and some women, too. They were as fascinated by our “houses” which were ready in 10 minutes, as we were by their looks. Amazing experience. The next morning, just as I peeped out of my tend, I caught them standing there, as if they had been waiting for me all night. The Karamojong or Karimojong are a Nilotic ethnic group. They are agro-pastoral herders living mainly in the north-east of Uganda. Their language is also known as Karamojong or Karimojong and is part of the Nilotic language family. The main livelihood activity of the Karamojong is herding livestock, which has social and cultural importance. Crop cultivation is a secondary activity, undertaken only in areas where it is practicable. Due to the arid climate of the region, the Karamojong have always practised a sort of pastoral transhumance, where for 3–4 months in a year, they move their livestock to the neighboring districts in search of water and pasture for their animals. De jonge vrouwen worden vaak misbruikt en mishandeld. Ze worden verwaarloosd, mogen het huis van de man niet meer verlaten, zijn geoorloofd kinderen te baren en op te voeden, en te zorgen in huis. De kinderen verlaten dus hun eigen familie om in die van de schoonfamilie te werken. Dit is tot op de dag van vandaag nogsteeds een stille ramp. It is no surprise that this year’s World Environmental Health day, marked every 26th of September, is about public health. Certainly, the current global pandemic has brought forth the extent to which we are all connected, existing in an intricate ecosystem, where the health of one component - from climate, to habitat, to plant and wildlife - impacts the other. More than ever, this year has zeroed in on the significant role that conserving biodiversity plays in human health. ... Beyond the obvious benefits (food security, safe water, clean air, ecotourism etc) scientists are now finding that a healthy environment may be a key factor in avoiding future pandemics! How? For starters, the less the encroachment into natural habitats, the less the risk of transmitting disease between species. (PS. the transmission mechanisms of the corona-virus is not yet certain, but research indicates that it is a zoonotic disease.) The bottom line is that ecological instability impacts the resilience of every species. …… Yet, nature is declining and species facing extinction. For example, the size of wildlife population has decreased by two-thirds since 1970. Intact forest land decreased by 7 percent from the year 2000 to 2013. That’s the equivalent of 36,000 football fields every day for 13 years! How does such erosion impact human wellbeing? The answer is immensely. ... Communities and their sustainability is a catalyst to conservation. And vice versa. This is the Lewa model. 17 community water projects, giving over 2000 people access to clean water. 400 small scale farmers trained on sustainable agriculture in the past 6 years. Tree nurseries that produce 6000 tree seedlings per year, regenerating forest cover for both human and wildlife habitats. Over 4000 students visiting the Lewa conservation education center every year for environmental awareness. And in keeping with the theme of the day, health clinics that attend to over 50,000 people in a year! There’s more, but you get the idea, right? El crecimiento de las Peñas: Las Peñas de Fútbol han ido en crecimiento exponencial, muchas, incluso, son oficiales. La organización y el seguimiento de estos aficionados es increíble. Pero también en cada esquina hay acalorados debates, magistrales conferencias y hasta señalamientos tácticos como si fuéramos entrenadores del más alto nivel. #3ro. Meet Vaida, Fatianca, and Querida 👋 These women are a few of the local farmers who have worked with us for many years planting coffee on Mount Gorongosa. Vaida (left) has been with us for ten years, first as a volunteer in the rainforest reforestation project and later helping to shape the #GorongosaCoffee initiative. From the start, she was clear that a reforestation initiative would only be successful if it also helped local farmers feed their families. The answer, it turns out, was coffee! Vaida was hired to run the coffee and native tree nursery at the top of Mount Gorongosas waterfall. Today, she works five days a week and is responsible for over 200,000 coffee seedlings and 20,000 rainforest trees. ✊ Women’s rights activists in Uganda are taking down the patriarchy. ✊ ⠀ ⠀ As part of the IRC’s Listen Up program with @statedept @stateprm - which aims to both listen *to* women and girls who are displaced (instead of deciding *for* them) and to amplify their voices - South Sudanese refugees and Ugandan change-makers are working together so that women and girls can live free from violence. ⠀ ⠀ Swipe 👉 and read below to meet some of these activists we’re proud to work with: ⠀ ⠀ ✊ Jemimah Sadia, a refugee from South Sudan, is the founder of Togoleta, a women’s activist group in Bidi Bidi camp (the second largest in the world) that provides counseling to refugees in the camp to prevent violence and help women and girls recover from abuse. Building up her grass-roots women’s movement has been a huge part of her life since she found safety in Uganda.⠀ ⠀ ✊Grace Muuduru has been standing up for women since she was at school. She remembers confronting boys bullying her friend and telling them: ‘One day this girl could be President!’ Today, she works for COSMESS, a women’s rights group in northern Uganda that helps both refugees and Ugandan women.⠀ ⠀ ✊ Jackie Letaru is a teacher in Uganda who challenges sexism in her classroom. “I’m a feminist, a strong one,” she said. She cultivates a culture where girls know their value and are respected. “One of my responsibilities at the school is being a leader to girls. Education is a key to their success.” ⠀ ⠀ ✊ Foni Grace fled war in South Sudan to Uganda in 2016, taking her two daughters with her to Bidi Bidi camp. Today, she’s a member of Togoleta, the group founded by Jemimah (above). “My work for women will be permanent. Une affaire de Famille Le combat pour Adama cest avant tout le combat dune famille pour lamour et lhonneur de lun des leurs. Une famille unie qui prend tous les coups et les rend plus fort encore face à un système qui use de tous les vices pour la faire taire que ce soit par la peur, par la honte, la menace, la répression... Ils usent de tous les appareils de létat pour mettre leur plan à exécution et rien ne les arrête. La loi quils proclament tant vouloir faire respecter, les droits quils prétendent tant garantir à tous, ils les bafouent chaque jour un peu plus sans le moindre remord... Mais dans 30 ans on se souviendra deux comme les derniers acharnés dun système qui sécroule sur lui même, qui se rattache à un monde fondé sur loppression des uns et les privilèges des autres... Nous luttons contre cela pour lavenir de nos familles, lavenir de nos enfants... Et la famille Traore sest agrandie chaque année un peu plus avec les proches dAdama, ses amis, ses voisins, son quartier, les Beaumontois.. Puis le Comité sest créé autour de toutes ces solidarités afin dapporter son soutien. Soutien qui sest élargi à vous tous qui prenez position dans la société, qui témoignez des abus des institutions, qui résistez avec vos moyens pour LA DIGNITÉ. Car cest de cela quil sagit. The most humbling and heartwarming experience. A visit to the beautiful country of Malawi where @mindfulchefuk has donated over 1.2million school meals via our charity partner @onefeedstwo - for every meal we sell, we donate one to a child in poverty. These school children have so little and yet are some of the smiliest humans I’ve met. They often walk up to 2 hours barefoot each day to school, and in many cases this is their only meal every day as their parents can not afford to feed them.
