Never expected to do three whale shark trips in one year, but I aint complaining! Getting to spend so much time in the water with the worlds largest fish has been amazing, never get tired of swimming and freediving with these gentle giants. This photo is from an assignment earlier in the year for @smilemag, the in-flight magazine for @cebupacificair. My friend @willseathelight and I spent almost two weeks in a relatively remote area in the Philippines - it was amazing to have the chance to slow down and take in the rhythms of village life in the Philippines. Big thanks to the wonderful folks from Southern Leyte who were so welcoming and friendly, and also a huge thanks to everyone at the @lamaveproject and especially @gonzo_araujo for helping Corey and I with the trip. Thanks to Corey for never getting tired of freediving and trying to keep up with the sharks while I was shooting - youll see him in all the shots with the whale sharks. El verano continúa, considera que es posible una: #PICADURA de Raya, cuales son los primeros pasos y auxilios, como se debe proceder ante la urgencia de una picadura de una Raya. La mayoría de los casos de picaduras de rayas de río se da en personas que estaban vadeando el río o una laguna. La raya, pariente cercano al tiburón, generalmente descansa sobre fondos arenosos poco profundos por eso suele ser habitual encontrarlas en alguna playa arenosa. Al caminar por estos lugares se puede pisar una raya a lo que responderá con un golpe de su cola armada con un gran aguijón o púa. Casi el 100% de las heridas son producidas en el tercio inferior de las piernas o el pie. Las Rayas pertenecen a la familia Potamotrygonidae y a unos diez centímetros del final de la cola tienen dos púas siendo una más larga que la otra, ambas dentadas. Las púas están recubiertas por un tegumento gelatinoso que es sumamente tóxico y que generalmente se desprende quedando adherido a la herida. El síntoma predominante de una picadura de raya es el dolor inmediato, agudo, punzante y pulsante o espasmódico. Este dolor tiene como característica principal que aumenta en la hora y media siguiente y se irradia hasta afectar a toda la pierna y es incalculablemente mayor que el causado por un pinchazo con una lata, vidrio o hierro sumergido. La herida se produce por desgarro ya que la púa es dentada y al salir va desgarrando los tejidos produciendo cortes muy grandes y muy sangrantes. Primeros pasos: El primer paso es el lavado de la herida en forma inmediata con agua limpia y bien fría. Este lavado elimina bastante cantidad de veneno y además el frío actúa como vaso constrictor y previene la absorción de mayor cantidad de veneno. Si se nota la presencia de la espina o restos del tegumento gelatinoso hay que sacarlo con ayuda de una pinza chica. Una vez bien limpia la herida se debe sumergir el miembro afectado en agua tan caliente como se pueda llegar a soportar por unos treinta minutos como mínimo. Way more noble reason the glorious pastas of these days... When a puffer fish puffs up, it takes in water to increase the size. This violently forces the puffer’s organs to be pressed to the side, inside the body causing the organs to flatten. This creates an extreme amount of stress for the puffer fish. In some cases the puffer fish dies from this stress. ⚠️Please stir away from dive guides who will stimulate a response from this fish just to get a couple extra dollars.💙 Many species are poisonus; a highly toxic substance, tetraodontoxin, is especially concentrated in the internal organs (liver and gonads). Although this substance can cause death, puffers are sometimes used as food, especially in Japan. 30 juin 2014 : mon vieux rêve est à portée de palmes. Je m’apprête à plonger pendant 24 heures à 20 mètres de profondeur. C’est une plongée expérimentale inédite et stressante mais c’est aussi une chance car ce lieu est unique et le moment aussi : par milliers, des mérous camouflage se sont donnés rendez-vous. Je suis parmi eux, je vais pouvoir les observer durant toute une journée et toute une nuit. Grâce à des transects de photo-comptage, et un long travail de cartographie, il a été possible pour la première fois d’estimer leur population : 18 000 mérous camouflage, un record du monde ! Pourquoi viennent-ils si nombreux ? Pour se reproduire ! Observer et expliquer leur unique ponte annuelle : c’était le challenge de l’expédition GOMBESSA 2 « le Mystère Mérou ». June 30th 2014 : my old dream is within the range of my dive fins. I am about to dive for 24 hours at 20 meters deep. It is a unique experimental and stressful dive but it’s also a chance because this place is unique as is the timing : thousands of camouflage groupers have just gathered. I am among them, and I’m going to observe them for a whole day and whole night. Thanks to photography transects, and a long cartography work it was possible to estimate their population for the first time : 18000 camouflage groupers, a world record! Why are they so numerous? To reproduce! It’s #SharkandRayAwarenessDay! For me, #SharkAwarenessDay is every day. Everything I do, centres around sharks, how important they are, how misunderstood they still are, how cool they are, how fascinating I find them. From my roles @sharkeducation and @baskingirish, to my PhD @zoologytcd, to every conversation I have w/ family, friends & strangers, I share my passion for them. Sharks are critical to the health of our oceans and planet. But you know what is also critical to our planet, oceans and sharks? People. I’ve been thinking, learning, reading and talking a lot about humans recently. My field of #SharkScience is overwhelmingly white. And the fact is, we need diversity in the fight for our planet and sharks. Fellow shark scientist Jasmin Graham wrote that Non-homogenous groups are more innovative, generate higher quality ideas and are able to analyze things more critically than homogenous groups. In other words diversity brings the desperately needed creativity to solve many scientific, conservation and environmental issues. Ive also been absorbing @ayanaelizas words: people of color are significantly more concerned about climate change than white people are but if they are busy fighting for their lives, how can we expect them to have time to fight for our planet, let alone sharks? Ive often said that I want my research will be rooted in collaboration with the people it most impacts, particularly small communities who rely on sharks to survive and are often forgotten when policies are created. @greengirlleah recently defined #IntersectionalEnvironmentalism as an inclusive version of environmentalism that advocates for both the protection of people and the planet, putting words on my feelings. In my case, maybe #IntersectionalScience is more fitting. In the words of @ashadevos if we are to protect the vast majority of our planet, we need the vast majority of our world’s population onboard and working together. Sharks need us all on their side. So today, pledge with me to support Black, Indigenous, LatinX and South Asian communities in shark science through continuous learning, sharing, donating, mentoring, listening, collaborating... Protecting the reef! South Florida is home to the only coral reef system in the continental United States. Floridians need to be vigilant in protecting an already fragile ecosystem damaged by run off and bleaching. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is poised to start a major dredging project in Port Everglades without implementing protections that will save nearby corals. Eighty to ninety percent of the coral reef has already died or been badly harmed, and this proposed project will cause even more damage. Write to your representative and tell them that you want the Corps and NOAA to ensure that dredging impacts don’t destroy corals and coral habitat in Port Everglades! During a similar dredging project at the Port of Miami, the Corps illegally harmed 10 times the number of corals it had predicted would be damaged, causing impacts from sedimentation. We can’t let that happen in Port Everglades. There is no need to kill what is left of our fragile Florida ecosystems for the sake of industrial growth that is unsustainable. The project is up for congressional approval, and the Senate recently approved the Water Resources Development Act, which includes language to authorize the Port Everglades dredging. Now it’s up to the House of Representatives to weigh in on the project. Florida’s waters and ecosysytems are critically important to the state’s economic well-being and its residents’ quality of life. Earthjustice has fought for years to ensure that these waters are protected. Together we must ask Congress to ensure that the Corps issues a supplemental or new environmental impact statement and biological opinion for the Port Everglades project. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan.    The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised.   The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. 🤩 FACT FRIDAY 🤩 The White Spotted Shovelnose Ray is a huge (and beautiful!) ray - measuring in at approx. 3 meters long! They are found in the Indo-Pacific and eat mainly crustaceans and mollusks such as crab, shrimp, and clams. They are quite shy in the wild, and will often swim away if a diver tries to approach. However, they are caught as by-catch and their large fins can be sold for exceptionally high prices within the shark finning industry. Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. #MeetASharkMonday #MeetARayMonday 😉⠀ The Spotted Eagle ray-Aetobatus narinari ⠀ ➡️The spotted eagle ray is distributed worldwide in tropical and warm temperate waters. Each has its own unique pattern of white spots which can be used like a fingerprint to individually identify them. ⠀ ➡️They are commonly found in bays, coral reefs, and occasionally in estuarine habitats, and up 60 meters deep. ⠀ ➡️Although they are considered a coastal species, they have a wide geographic distribution which implies that some individuals migrate far distances over deep water. ⠀ ➡️As their name suggests, they are as graceful as an eagle when gliding effortlessly through the water. Their wingspan is the largest of all eagle rays, measuring over ⠀ 3 meters! ⠀ ➡️They can be seen swimming solitary, but they will also travel in large groups, sometimes consisting of several hundreds of individuals, to cross open water. ⠀ ➡️They are often seen leaping completely out of the water, presumably to avoid predators or to remove parasites. ⠀ ➡️They have a keen sense of smell, capable of sniffing out prey that is hidden in the sand with their large snouts. They use their flat, crushing teeth to crunch through the hard shells of crabs, scallops, oysters and sea urchins and use the papillae located in the mouth to separate the shells from the flesh. ⠀ ➡️They are an ovoviviparous species, which means the eggs will develop inside the body and hatch within the mother. We encountered this manta swimming along the top reef close to the end of the dive. It swam right up to the group of divers and that’s when we realised it was in a bit of trouble. It had a fishing hook and line wrapped twice round its body and it was cutting into its top lip and pelvic fin. Luckily with the help of @aalixx.alipys and @fuvahmulahdiveschool we managed to cut the line and even get the hook out. Speaking to locals, it sounds like this type of hook is not used in the Maldives suggesting this manta has been some way offshore. - @scubography on Instagram

Guitarfish inhabits tropical and warm temperate waters worldwide, generally preferring the shallows where they swim slowly and feed on small fishes. . They have a flattened forebody with pectoral fins fused to the sides of the head. The hindbody resembles that of a shark, with two dorsal fins and a well-developed caudal fin. The beautiful white sand of a tropical sea beach is majorly produced by Parrorfish poop 😀 .... No matter how strange it may sound, it’s actually true. Using their beak-like teeth, Parrotfishes scrape off algae growing on coral reefs, and in turn, they consume parts of the corals. The indigestible coral skeletons made of calcium-carbonate are later excreted as sand. Just one Parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of white sand each year. @falando.sobre.mergulho #falandosobreensinodejoelhos NÃO, NÃO, NUNCA FAÇA ISSO. É fato que instrutores, AINDA, insistem em ensinar habilidades com seus alunos de joelhos no fundo. Em primeiro lugar, ajoelhar no fundo, como é fácil intuir, causa um impacto negativo no ambiente subaquático. Mas, para além disso, ajoelhar causa um impacto negativo na conduta do novo mergulhador. A pergunta que se deve fazer, neste ponto é, em que momento, durante a atividade real de mergulho, o mergulhador deve ajoelhar? E a resposta é, NUNCA. É claro que é mais fácil para o instrutor controlar e para o aluno demonstrar uma habilidade ajoelhado no fundo. Mas, ao fazer isso, o instrutor acaba por ensinar o aluno a ignorar um dos FUNDAMENTOS do mergulho, que, por definição, é a base, a regra primordial da atividade, que é o controle de flutuabilidade, criando, assim, um mau hábito. Ora, antes de aprender habilidades, e para que se mereça ser chamado de mergulhador, é necessário dominar, minimamente, os fundamentos, respiração, trim, propulsão e controle de flutuabilidade. São esses fundamentos a essência do mergulho. Todas as demais habilidades vêm depois disso. Depois que o aluno atingir uma flutuabilidade neutra é que se deve pedir para desalagar a máscara, por exemplo. Se o instrutor nunca pedir ao aluno para ajoelhar, esse instinto, nunca será desenvolvido e isso somente trará benefícios ao mergulhador em toda sua “carreira” no mergulho. Ensinar habilidades com flutuabilidade neutra não é difícil. É somente o jeito certo de ensiná-las.
