Fall feels from the deep sea. 🍁 Brisingids are unusual sea stars found in the deep sea. They are different from typical sea stars because they use the spines on their arms as velcro to capture tiny prey as food. This group of brisingids was caught on camera in Rodriguez Seamount, off the coast of Southern California. The summit of Rodriguez Seamount is a smooth, gently domed platform. Rough hills stand above the platform and consist of dense, degassed ‘a‘a flows that erupted on the surface. Rodriguez stood at least 70 meters (229 feet) above sea level and formed a small island before sinking at least 700 meters (2,296 feet) seven to 11 million years ago. - @mbari_news on Instagram

LOOK DON’T TOUCH The lions mane jellyfish gets its name from it’s many long tentacles - all the beauty and bite of a lion! The tentacles can reach up to 3m in length and are packed with stinging cells to catch fish and other smaller jellyfish. This beautiful image was taken by Phil Wilkinson, who regularly shares photos of underwater critters living around the beautiful Irish coast. TREAD CAREFULLY - Tentacle fragments will sting you even if detached from the living jellyfish long after theyve been on the shore. Thankfully, lions mane season is over in the UK so beachgoers can tread a little more carefully when paddling chilly British shores. These structures are similar in composition to natural #coral #limestone, and it is strong, heavy, cheap, and readily available (4) Polyvinyl chloride or #galvanizedsteel (5) Mineral #accretion #technology or #Biorock. A method that applies safe, low voltage #electricalcurrents through #seawater, causing #dissolvedminerals to #crystallize on structures, growing into a white limestone like that which naturally makes up #coralreefs These are a few of the materials that are used to make an artificial reef. The red shrimp of mazara, is fished at a depth of more than 700 meters, using the trawling method, immediately afterwards it is directly frozen on board at a temperature of -50 degrees. Thanks to this method of conservation it is the only fish that remains unchanged from the moment of fishing, arriving fresh all over the world. The market price starts from 55€ per kg, divided into 3 bundles, and depending on the size varies in price. In the past it was discarded and thrown overboard during fishing trips, today it is the most sought after and valuable crustacean. Mazara del Vallo boasts the largest seafood in Italy, the second largest in Europe. A history that begins with subsistence fishing, mainly of blue fish. In the golden years, those from the end of the 1940s to the 1990s, Mazara had about 1300 fishing boats equipped with advanced technology and specialised in deep-sea fishing of this crustacean. It feeds on vegetable organisms, cannot be cultivated and is fished in uncontaminated waters. A pair of young porcelain crabs (Petrolisthes boscii), sitting with their backs against a live snail waiting it out at low tide. These porcelains crabs are common and abundant in Mumbais intertidal. Many animals in the intertidal can drop their limbs off to escape predators, and later regrow them, but porcelain crabs appear to do it very readily and with ease - giving them their name. (Regrowing lost parts costs animals a lot of energy and puts them at a disadvantage until the parts are back, so please dont make them do this just for a demo.) One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. . The beautiful white sand of a tropical sea beach is majorly produced by Parrorfish poop 😀 .... No matter how strange it may sound, it’s actually true. Using their beak-like teeth, Parrotfishes scrape off algae growing on coral reefs, and in turn, they consume parts of the corals. The indigestible coral skeletons made of calcium-carbonate are later excreted as sand. Just one Parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of white sand each year. - Sea stars are able to regenerate limbs, and in some cases, entire bodies. Some require the central body to be intact to regenerate, but a few species can grow an entirely new sea star just from a portion of a severed limb. They have no brains and no blood.

Been feeling a little stuck lately... ha, get it? Because this sea star is stuck to the side of the tank? ... Nevermind 😂 There are around 2,000 species of sea star globally, and of those the most common are the five hand variety, however some species have up to forty hands! At present there is only one recorded Australian species of sea star that is endangered, and that is the Derwent River Sea Star (not pictured). On a global scale many more are endangered, however it is often difficult to record populations and population trends. We often forget about the little guys and the underdogs when we talk about #endangeredspecies This photo pictures the underside of a sea star (I have no idea which species) that I photographed in a Sydney aquarium a few years ago. These unique critters can live to be 35 in captivity so hopefully one day I will visit it again! Sea stars are carnivorous and in this photo you can see their tiny, suction-cup feet which they use to pry open things like clams and oysters. Some species can also regenerate a whole new sea star from a single limb! The Sea Star is an echinoderm, not a fish, and is more closely related to sand dollars and sea urchins.
