We turned to the Coopers Brewery archives to form the foundations of the Coopers Alehouses brand. Old ads, graphics and photographs informed what would become a contemporary new look. From an early 20th-century beer label, the logo and typeface were born. Sparkling Bold is based on the lettering of vintage Coopers labels. Band worked with renowned type designer Dave Foster to create this unique font. Exactly 10 years ago today @michael_paszt @flerjames and I incorporated a sales company with a simple mission - to sell genre films to the worldwide market place. It was in response to the film we made together one year earlier, Sweet Karma. We made that film with our own money, with no outside help. I went so far as to put a second mortgage on my house & James cashed in some RRSPs to help finance it. So we decided rather than hand our creation over to some random sales company, that we would be better served selling the film ourselves, and potentially we’d make our money back. So with a smidgen of experience and a handful of contacts we blindly jumped into uncharted waters. Soon we were helping other Canadian genre filmmakers sell their films, then international genre filmmakers. Things were lean back then - I remember being at our first AFM taking meetings in the lobby of the Lowes because we couldn’t afford a booth or badges. We all worked secondary jobs those first 3 years, and worked from home. Just over 6 years ago we were stable enough to move into an office. Around the same time we started a distribution arm because of a hole we saw in the Canadian marketplace. Soon after that we started Northern Banner, a label to help our non-genre filmmaking friends get their films out there. Everything we’ve done we’ve done out of necessity and passion, and we’ve been fiercely independent every step of the way. We’ve helped some great films get made over the years. Seen our films play some amazing film fests and gain international recognition. And we’ve made a lot of incredible friends over these ten years (and of course a few enemies). Filmmaking isn’t easy, and it hasn’t always been fun, but it sure as hell has been rewarding. We couldn’t have done it without the help of Sean Breen, @jonnybunning @hugbarb @screendivision @mikaelanghelo @anelled @andrewtakingphotos, Michael Da Silva and a whole host of others (you know who you are). Now that this is starting to sound like a lame Oscar speech, I’m going to end it here - proud and amazed we made it this far, and excited to see what the next 10 years brings! - @andrew_t_hunt on Instagram

First US editions of towering Japanese postwar writer, actor, model, film director, and nationalist (he was deemed Japans Renaissance man for a reason) Mishimas sweeping, late-career tetralogy: Spring Snow (1972 - originally published in Japan in 1969), Runaway Horses (1973/1969), The Temple of Dawn (1973/1970), and The Decay of the Angel (1974/1971). Mishimas magnum opus both represents a climax of 20th-century decadent Japanese literature and provides insight into his obsessive assertions of the unity of beauty, eroticism, and death (notably, Mishima claimed Georges Bataille as the European thinker for whom he felt the most affinity). A prolific creator, Mishimas literary work is often overshadowed by his controversial life and death: he was the founder of Tatenokai, a private militia in Japan dedicated to traditional Japanese values, and later killed himself by the gruesome ritual suicide method of seppuku, after having that very day delivered the final installment of his tetralogy. Although his reason for committing suicide had at one point been attributed to a failed coup attempt at Japans military headquarters, it was later discovered that Mishima had been planning to carry out the act for over a year. A b/w pic for two b/w films. I was able to go to the archive today for the first time since June. I picked up a huge amount of stuff to work on, including the originals for these two films by the incredible Christopher Harris. Chris and I have been talking for a couple of years about bringing his negatives to the Academy, and it finally started happening this past January. At @canyoncinema ‘s instigation, Reckless Eyeballing will soon be digitized, and I’ll follow that up with preservation and printing on film. I’m also excited to work on Chris’s 60-minute still/here, to make new 16mm elements, prints, and also digitize it for digital exhibition as well.
