Thought for the day, I’ve been mulling this comment in my mind, this should be a time for equality in all aspects, race and sex but that includes women too.. we are half of the population after all. Food for thought and the ‘elephant in the room’ in our industry which predominantly provides clothing and beauty for women is that there are so few females Creative Directors and CEOs. In recent media rhetoric women seem to be the last to be considered. Let’s not forget that women are still considered second class in many cultures and the weaker sex in others.. yet there’s not one woman I know and respect that could be considered weak and not equally capable of being the head of a company as much as a man. I’m by no means a feminist in the traditional sense but our industry and all industries need to still consider equality for the sexes as well as racial equality and even better the two simultaneously where a woman of colour can be at the helm of a brand whether business or creative. Of course this exists but it is rare and doesn’t seem to be a true consideration in the selection process. Although this is being discussed more within our industry it is behind closed doors so now it’s the time to have the conversation openly. Today the AMOCA Collections Team is featuring one piece from ‘The Democratic Cup’ series in remembrance of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In 2017, the ArtStream Nomadic Gallery visited AMOCA and introduced us to The Democratic Cup series. The Democratic Cup was conceived as a slow activism project that used handmade cups to encourage people to become active and engaged citizens in our democracy. The intent was to foster person-to-person civil conversations about social and political issues. As a country, we need conversations and connections to reinforce the dignity and inclusivity of all Americans, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexuality, and culture. The Democratic Cup created these cups to act as agents of social change by generating positive political discourse. Founded in March of 2016, The Democratic Cup project was the brainchild of artists Ayumi Horie of Maine and Nick Moen of North Carolina. The project was designed as a collaborative effort by 49 passionate artists across the country. Icons, heroes, and conversation-starters like Ruth Bader Ginsburg adorn each cup. It is a heartbreaking loss for J.Lemons, women, this country, and the world to lose one of this country’s greatest women in its history forever more, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Founding this company and having a staff of women, I often think about the great power and responsibility I have in being a woman and business owner and employing women. And I think about how hard Ruth fought to not only get a job as a woman, but make change for other women, men, and everyone in between. Many women wouldn’t be in business if it weren’t for #RBG making it possible to get a loan without a man. And there are countless other ways this one woman fought with a vigor unlike anyone else (she would receive chemo on Fridays and go to work on Monday) to create the equal world we see today, make feminism what it is today, and make America what it is today. I took this photo about a year ago in a Soho shop. The second while on a plane watching the RBG documentary. At the time I just thought it was cool and so cute that she’d been made into an action figure. It didn’t occur to me till last night that it was also quite fitting and who she was, a Real Life Action Figure. It’s said in Jewish(Kabbalistic) thought that when someone dies at the beginning of Rosh Hashanah it’s because God has waited till the last moment to take them because they are the righteous, the most needed. This frail woman tiny only in stature, who for many years battled the pain and ravages of cancer daily so she could defend and dispense justice as best she saw it, was a lioness of the law and the very definition of what is meant by a righteous person (tzadikim). Living by her example is the way to honor who she was. The Notorious RBG was a blessing to us all in life as will forever be her memory. Seated in my manual wheelchair in the dining room studio with a white backdrop, I have on a black 3/4 length sleeve wiggle dress with black gloves and a silver collar. The @uniquevintage black dress is a favorite because it looks fabulous hugging my curves while also providing stretch to be comfortable to wear throughout the day. I’m wearing a silver choker unhooked to form a dissent collar in honor of the life and work of Supreme Court justice #RuthBaderGinsburg. As she wore gloves daily on her dainty hands, I rocked the same. I’m tired, my heart is tired from the loss this year. Tonight, I’m sending my love to #RBG, a profound legal scholar who shaped the way I thought about constitutional law as a law student. Her dissents brought life to law in ways that are validating and humanizing to many. She devoted her life to law. Though she was not perfect with her white feminism showing, her overall opinions have opened doors and created protected rights for many marginalized people. From time to time, we update our designs and graphics as we see fit. Times and places change. Sometimes these are small changes and sometimes they are big ones. Our Brooklyn map was the first design we made in 2006. This map has gone through many iterations. A few months ago, we added a nod to Ruth Bader Ginsburg who grew up in Midwood, Brooklyn. Ive been sitting with this for a few days. The great RBG has been staring at me all day from this bag I purchased from my favorite bookstore, years ago. I was working Friday and answered a call from a woman about missing part of her order (the alcohol) and after sorting it out she asked to have a moment of silence for the great Justice Ginsberg and we briefly cried together. The other side of this bag says Time is on the side of change, and that it is. Ruths rest has been well earned. She fought the good fight and blazed so many trails. I hate that we cant properly mourn her because of the implications her death has on our democracy. It infuriates me. Please check your voter registration, request a mail-in ballot, make a voting plan, donate, volunteer, and VOTE! Fight like hell to preserve-- no IMPROVE our democracy.
