Students enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology Program at ULM visited students in our Early Head Start Centers this week. They volunteer to provide speech pathology services giving our children assistance with developing their speech each fall and spring semester. We are excited to have them back in our classrooms! ⁠ ⁠ We are currently accepting applications for pregnant moms and children under 3 for Early Head Start. The program provides early, continuous, intensive, and comprehensive child development and family support services to low-income infants and toddlers, children with disabilities, and their families, and pregnant women and their families. So I will start at the beginning... recently I was searching for a name for our new vintage bloom decals. I’ve been indecisive over it because, well... I wanted something meaningful. I wanted it to be special. So I reached out to a Perth mum whose little girl has high risk stage 4 Neuroblastoma. “An insidious and stubborn childhood cancer that accounts for 15% of all childhood cancer deaths”. Avaya who is only 4, is currently 9 months into treatment with 6 months to go. Such a tough thing for a little girl and a whole family unit to experience. We knew straight away we wanted to do something special for her, so it started off with us deciding to name our flowers after Avaya; Avaya Vintage Blooms and gifting our first set to her before they release. I wanted to do more though... so I reached out to some other businesses to see if they would help me brighten her and her families day. I honestly was not expecting the love it received and the generosity and kindness. Together we hope we have all made a little impact 🥰 We want to raise awareness on Neuroblastoma and Avaya. Great article in The New York Times this morning about how to protect children’s eyes while they spend so much time on computers for remote learning! Here is a small summary of the article: ▫️ 1.) Take frequent breaks from looking at material up close - use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. This relaxes the focusing system. ▫️ 2.) Hold devices and material further from your face. We tend to hold things like phones very close, forcing us to converge our eyes, accommodate, and put strain on our focusing system. The Doctor in the article recommends holding reading material at about 2 feet from your face. ▫️ 3.) Pay attention to signs your child needs glasses or a new prescription including: closing one eye, squinting, moving closer to see things, and difficulty with sustained reading. ▫️ 4.) Take your child for an eye exam! Many parents don’t know their child needs glasses because children don’t know the difference between blurry and clear when they are very young and don’t know how to articulate that they can’t see well. Is your child having trouble settling down to schoolwork? Wont focus? Keeps fussing and making requests? Kids do this when their feelings are blocking their ability to concentrate. Maybe your child doesnt feel confident in the maths he knows is coming up? Maybe she had a scary dream last night, and it feels better to be moving than sitting at a table. Who knows! The good news is, you dont HAVE to know. The behavior is the signal. So, how do you address it? A good process is to fulfil the first request if you can. So, imagine you and your child both sit down to practise drawing shapes. But straightway your child fidgets, and requests some water. Do that for your child, warmly and with caring. Then, he or she complains and fusses because the water is in the wrong cup. Ok, now you know: NO request is really going to fulfil your child, and so your so-called study session will likely be a lot of effort as you try to have them focus, and your child whines, or tries to distract your attention some other way. Their feelings about what you want to happen are driving that behavior. So, instead, as soon as you fulfil the first request but the behavior continues, set a limit. Oh honey no, this cup is fine. You want to stay calm. Stay warm and supportive. But hold the limit. Its time now. Were going to draw shapes. You watch for their reaction. They may cry right away. Often, theyll try and work around your limit. But I WANT the BLUE cup. Not right now. Keep your voice gentle. Keep words to a minimum. But let your child have this moment to expel some of those feelings holding them up. They may cry, writhe, get angry. Stay warm. Know they will feel better soon, and hold that space for them. They might surprise you by picking up the crayon and racing through the shapes. Or not. But next time you suggest it, theyll likely find it easier, even be eager! Bone broth won’t heal your gut. ⠀ ⠀ It potentially (see problem number one below) provides you with some vitamins and minerals. It makes things absolutely delicious. It’s fun to say.⠀ ⠀ That’s it. No more benefits. Here’s why the claims don’t add up.⠀ ⠀ Problem number one: the amounts of collagen present in bone broth vary wildly based on the method used to produce it. Whilst they’re all probably going to contain at least some collagen, that’s about as specific as you can be. ⠀ ⠀ (Much, much bigger) problem number two: there literally isn’t a single study showing that collagen heals your gut. Not one. Believe me, I looked. ⠀ ⠀ Other important point: the idea that you can “heal” your gut is dangerous. Gut health is incredibly important, and there are absolutely times it can be compromised (ie. inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s and ulcerate colitis, or autoimmune conditions such as celiac disease) but please, be wary of someone who talks about “healing your gut”. I’m not saying every single one of them is a loon, it’s just that I’m currently yet to be proven wrong. ⠀ ⠀ By all means, use it to level up your culinary pursuits, but please don’t use it for your health. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ References: this is literally the best I could do. One of the most challenging decisions a parent faces in decorating a kids’ playroom is storage. Where on earth does one store all their stuff? In my son @hello.im.jordan playroom, I‘m using 1 area with Ikea Kallax and the other area using Ikea Trofast. The colour, the shape, and the price are the reason why I choose this Ikea storage. It’s so simple and plain which is great for my bright colour toys. I love them both, as Kallax is great for books and decoration for open playroom like mine. While Trofast is really great to organize every toys. Ikea Trofast works its magic by sorting those bits into its individual sliding and removable tubs. Also, the height is perfect for little one to play. In short, if I have to choose only one, I will definitely choose Trofast since I have so many toys. I hated 7th grade. I was chubby, had very few friends, and couldnt quite decide if I wanted to grow up or remain a child. Before my 13th birthday, my mom asked what kind of birthday party I wanted: a sleepover, pool party, movies? I told her I didnt want a party at all because I didnt have friends to invite. When I did, the transformation blew me away: pale pink walls, white crown, a new daybed with a puffy white comforter, and everything fresh and perfect. Overnight, my parents had primed and painted my walls, assembled a bed, and made my room look like a fantasy land. I even got my own phone. I didnt feel so alone anymore. . . . My parents didnt have a lot, but what they did have, they maximized. Through my room, they made me feel loved and special that day. I got to do this recently for my own kids, and its almost more magical on this side of the transaction. I love watching them get cozy in their spaces, especially now that theyre spending so much more time there. . . . This is @mollyhkent for the #VAStakeover! Today I thought I’d share some images from my degree show proposal, the alternative we had to submit as the real thing wasn’t able to go ahead due to Covid. I had intended to construct a custom built room to house my textile works, and combined with painted interior and 3D objects the room was intended to represent a metaphor for how doubt resides inside of us. Small textile pieces spill out of the room, and over the course of the exhibition, more would appear daily to represent how doubt can populate and grow. During lockdown I decided to teach myself how to use the computer software Blender to bring this idea to life, creating a top scale model of the installation within a studio space at ECA. The Abacus was invented during the Ming dynasty in China around 1300BC, and quickly became a practical calculating tool that was critical in their advancement of technology. It is unlikely that the people using them as originally intended could have predicted that their use as a calculating device would be superseded by it’s use as a children’s toy, but it’s a crazy world we live in! How the ancients actually used an abacus for complex calculations remains a mystery 🧐, but we do know that children can use them as a great introduction to counting, moving the beads 1 by 1, or 2 by 2, for example. 👶 To begin with, young children will most likely enjoy bashing the beads, moving them with their palms, and enjoying the noise it makes. As they start to improve their fine motor skills encourage them to move the beads individually and challenge their pincer grip. I feel like I need to add the disclaimer that our Playroom is lived in; this isn’t just for Instagram. We are in here for hours every week and I am the mother of a normal 12 month old {who can clear the shelf in a matter of minutes & who often prefers a plastic bottle over an pricy toy}. I’m sharing my “perfectly styled” Play room in it’s organized form for a reason. Speaking for myself, when my kitchen is a mess (which is often!) & I can’t find the bench, I’m overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start, and I don’t want to be there. It’s the same with a Play space. The way toys are displayed has an effect on how Play happens. Having an organized space is enticing to little ones. We personally don’t have boxes or bins of toys because they don’t work for us. The shelves are our storage, but also provide opportunities for development through the way they are displayed & invite little ones to Play. The invitations on Rory’s shelf are incomplete. For example, rather than displaying a completed puzzle on her shelf, the puzzle pieces are in a clear plastic tub (or basket/tray) to encourage her to complete it. When I share our Playroom with you, I want to remind you that you don’t need the most expensive toys, and you don’t need one of everything. I was an Early Childhood Educator so I have been collecting, purchasing & investing in items over the past 10 years; our Playroom isn’t an example of everything you NEED to have, rather I hope you can take inspiration from how to use what you already have at home to create an inviting space for your little ones. #acraftyliving_playroom - @acraftyliving on Instagram

In coaching parents who have kids with eating disorders, this theme comes up again and again. I ask: how do you react when they feel bad? And then we start the work of making space for the child’s full emotional expression. We make space for the child to exist in their full self. And there is no doubt that these parents LOVE their kids and want what’s best for them. It’s just that they didn’t know that part of parenting is allowing room for the suck. For anger. Disappointment, unease, despair, and so much more are a natural, healthy part of the human experience. Often when kids can’t tell us what’s wrong, they show us with behaviors.
