Have you ever bought a self-improvement program/book for someone...and they didnt do anything with it? - I learned this around year 10 of being in business: Buying a self-development program for someone else is almost always doomed to failure. - I learned that self development isnt subject to the usual scientific method. For example, I could walk out on the street and give my Earnable program to 100 people, then study them vs. a control group of 100 people who dont get Earnable. The result: Virtually none of them would start a business. - In self development, you first have to want to succeed, then you have to have the skills (including time, perseverance, focus, self-directed learning, and occasionally money), you have to have the social support (spouse, parents, friends), and then luck. Its no surprise that change is hard. - Its also no surprise that if you buy someone a self-development program, they rarely succeed. Its hard enough for us to succeed when we choose ourselves. Remember that others havent gone through the journey you have. If they complain, or bring up problems, listen...ask if theyre looking for solutions...even suggest something -- but avoid getting them a solution. Figured this would be a good time to share my debt free journey... ⠀ I had $5000ish worth of debt as a combo of debt in collections and money I owed a friend. I thought it was trivial so I didn’t share my journey. But I allowed that $5000 to define my relationship with money and myself. That number was a reminder of all the mistakes I made, of all the times I gave up on myself because life got hard. At some point that 5k was more than I made in 6 months. Im not exaggerating. Not too long ago I had checked out of life, I wasn’t there for me. I was broke and broken. ⠀ My wake up call wasn’t just hitting a financial rock bottom, it was when I realized my motivation for getting my ish together was to simply not end up like the dude I was dating. WILD. But when you’re broke and broken... guess what you attract 👀. So I got it together, finally finished college after 7 years, ended things with dude, got a shitty job to start paying off the debt and most importantly I went to therapy. ⠀ The first half of this year I wasn’t earning a livable wage and was proud of myself for clocking in everyday. I proved to myself that I could be there for me and do it consistently... finally. And now by the grace of God, someone saw fit that I take all my knowledge and experience, the good and the bad and teach. Some may complain about a teacher salary but this check hits different knowing where I came from. ⠀ So when you hear me talk about getting shame out of your finances, it’s because I lived it. When I say don’t let the debt consume you, it’s because I let just $5000 cripple me. There’s more to life. You don’t need to be intense about your journey... you just need to be intentional. ⠀ I’m here to normalize FREEDOM. Not just debt freedom, but freedom from shame and guilt, from fear, from anything that’s holding you back. I’m not sure if freedom is a destination...it seems like when I get free from one thing, something else comes up. But I’m committed to the process.
