Magical Thinking, 1998, oil on linen, 42 x 87 in Eliot on the school bus looking through the window. Back then, I’d pack his lunch with carrots and fruit roll-ups and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a brown paper bag with a new drawing for him everyday.. a zany portrait of him.. or an elaborate old smiley faced man. I’d stand below the window and watch him.. getting settled on the bus, finding his seat and going off to school.. there was just something melancholy about the way that he would leave every morning.. our separation through the glass, him passing with the reflections of the neighborhood houses and trees.. the other kids on the bus being irreverent and doing all the things that school kids do. We did this for years. Those days.. so mundane when they were happening.. are irretrievable. Appreciate every moment! Sending New Years blessings to all of you. ✨ The past 6 months have been a storm of grief and joy and lots of introspection. Time and space. Change and growth dragging me kicking and screaming. My beautiful sister Robyn passed away in June from complications after surviving leukemia. We spent a month in the ICU gathering and praying for something different. If you know my family or stories from my blog then you know the depth of love between me and my 3 sisters. Losing Robyn has been unimaginable. Finding our footing without her has felt impossible most days. But experiencing joy and humor and light in any of it has been her lasting gift. The kids have helped keep us afloat. Sybil turned 1 in October. Max gets his driver’s permit next week and Phoebe at 7 is more self assured and better accessorized than I’ll ever hope to be. Matt and I celebrated 10 years together this past fall. Life is good and painful and every bit worth it. But caring for a newborn baby in a camp or refugee settlement can be extremely challenging. We distributed baby care items, baby formula, and diapers during the resettlement. 12 weeks ago I had an ultrasound 20 weeks into my pregnancy.✨🌱 Seeing a developing human moving inside me caused a huge shift for me! Seeing body parts like a spine, legs, a head, caused a *click* and a major shift in the energy of my pregnancy. I felt more acceptance and positivity after being in a struggle puddle about the situation for a while. 🤰🏼 When I first found out I was pregnant, I was stunned yet excited about it. Me and my baby’s dad were both looking forward to the journey together although we barely knew each other. I got pregnant just 3 months into dating! Over the next few months we stopped getting along. We tried to find ways to make it work, but we ended up separating and pretty much stopped communicating. It was hard on us both. Not the outcome we always had for the dream of love and parenthood. 😔 As time passed, I felt grief around losing my freedom, who I knew myself to be, and the “old me dying”. A huge part of my grieving was accepting that I was on this journey pretty much alone. And, that after all the years of a deep relationship with my ex, confusingly it wasn’t happening with him. It was *extremely* humbling that I got pregnant by someone so fast after being committed to celibacy, and that on top of that, that it wasn’t gonna work out with him. 🥺 I faced this truth head on. I openly talked about it, a lot. I surrendered. I accepted and leaned into the road ahead as a single mother. I spent nights crying about how “this isn’t how it was supposed to be.” I felt alone, even with all the other support I had. It felt unnatural to not have my child’s father near, supporting and caring. I felt bad for my child. 🌊 Time passed and I grew through that. I am now 33 weeks along, and recently me and my baby’s dad are developing an amazing friendship. We have clear communication, and I’m feeling supported by him. I feel strong and grateful after going through that intense initiation of grief. I feel more and more ready to birth this child into the world! It hasn’t been the ideal situation, but we are making the best of it. I feel connected to my baby and to motherhood. I expand and grow daily. Hoy les contaré sobre la visa de estudiante, que es la visa que tenemos actualmente. 🔅La visa de estudiante es relativamente fácil de obtener, pero necesitas adjuntar muchos documentos y demostrar fondos económicos cuando vienes con familia. 🔅Necesito tener título universitario? No, no es requisito. 🔅Puedes optar por un curso de inglés o un curso técnico (VET) o incluso entrar a la Universidad ( aunque es carísima). En mi caso estoy terminando un diploma en Early Childhood Education (VET). 🔅Los dos deben estudiar? No,solo uno puede ser el titular de la visa y la familia son dependientes del titular. 🔅Con esta visa tenemos la posibilidad de trabajar 40 horas cada 2 semanas. Y full time en vacaciones. 🔅Si trabajas las 40 horas por semana ganando el salario mínimo, alcanza para pagar la renta, comida, cuentas, transporte y ahorrar un poco para tu próxima visa. 🔅Venir con niños mayores de 6 años implica un gasto extra y bastante costoso. Por cada niño mayor de 6 años es obligatorio que asistan a la escuela. La escuela pública tiene un valor de 14.000 au aprox al año. 🔅Los Childcare que son los centros donde van niños menores de 5 años, pueden tener un costo entre los 45 a 120 au por día. 🔅Para venir con familia debes pagar un seguro médico familiar, valor aprox 3000 au por año. 🔅Una visa de trabajo/ residencia puede demorar entre 2-5 años, muchos me escriben pensando que en un año pueden lograrlo pero no es así de fácil. 🔅 Se necesita nivel de inglés para venir ? Acá se puede aprender, pero obviamente para buscar un trabajo y desenvolverse hay que venir con un conocimiento base. 🔅 Yo siempre recomiendo antes de dar el gran paso, contactarse con un agente migratorio ( no de estudios), para que trabajen conjunto en un plan de que hacer, que estudiar y quizás como convalidar tu carrera. Just a little appreciation post... weve done some fulfilling things throughout this strife-filled year. Parenthood is a large role to fill; it is good, it is bad. Ive found such happinesd and hope for the future within these two. We work to teach our daughters to be tough but kind, to love all the people and to respect and appreciate peoples differences, to be smart and trust their instincts. Part of these lessons take place in our activities... whether marching for social justice changes we believe in, as a family, or dropping literature to people for important upcoming votes. Activism is important, however you choose to participate. One day they will be older and will get to define their world and make their own choices... I will do my best to love and support their choices. ☝️All of these greats things could never happen without the support and love of our Frenchman. He is a great human and I love our conversations.We have been working together to understand what is happening in the world around us. Day 5 of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. Fact: 20% of children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. I’m in a Winn Dixie Parking lot. I’ve been trying to make this post for three days but with little people, a husband, and a job it’s hard to get a moment to myself compile my thoughts, it’s also really, really hard to allow myself to fully feel everything that I want to convey. A couple of days ago I was at work and a song came on, not a truly haunting song like Fight Song, not a dance song that Jack loved to move to like Thriller, in fact I had to look the name of the song up later because it was just a song, but as soon as it started playing I had this beautiful flashback of me and Jack driving home from grocery shopping sometime before he got sick, he was probably four or Neely five. The song was playing and he was in his booster seat in the back and I remember looking into my rear view mirror and feeling so much love as he animatedly ate a chocolate croissant ( pain au chocolate) from Sprouts, his face was covered in chocolate and he was telling me what he was going to do when we got home, I remember everything down to the blueberry cheddar we also purchased. All the while this song played in the background and my brain recorded and filed it away for a later date. The memory hit me and at first it was gorgeous, like a dream and then it was a painful reminder of what I had lost. I stopped what I was doing and I went to the bathroom and I cried. I don’t personally listen to music anymore. It’s impossible to avoid at work or in the store of course but if I’m in my car the radio is on NPR or I’m listening to a podcast or audiobook. If Thompson is with me I will put the radio on for him but keep my phone close to my ear so I can drown it out with a podcast. If I’m an elephant music is my mouse, if I were Achilles, music is my heal. I’m grateful for the beautiful memories it can provoke but even the best memories lead to tears and then there are the songs we played to help him fight, the songs we played to celebrate, and the songs we played to say goodbye.
