And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. ⁣ ⁣ In the Grief Recovery Method Handbook, they refer to these kinds of platitudes as intellectually accurate and emotionally useless. ⁣ ⁣ Has anyone in the history of humanity ever calmed down because you said, Calm down? ⁣ ⁣ No, not that I am aware of. ⁣ ⁣ If you have the capacity and bandwidth you could see every decision you make as a grievance or a miracle.  ⁣ ⁣ If your limbic system is on fire however you are just trying to survive through the day.  ⁣ ⁣ Its as simple as that and its as complicated as it gets.  ⁣ ⁣ Its really easy to be an asshole in an e-mail, text, webinar, in your four-door on the freeway, in line for a coffee, or on social media. “Boy does it feel good to be a jerk” ... said no one ever.  ⁣ ⁣ Life is a constant test in reaction vs response.  In fact, I believe the better you get at responding the MORE you get tested to react.  ⁣ ⁣ So react the same old way and be surprised by the same results (insanity) or take a beat and breathe to respond to what’s happening. ⁣ ⁣ Which way are YOU going to go?  Grievance or miracle? Dont let the band pull your knee in as you step back! • 11 Lateral band walks - keep the knees out over your pinky toes as you step side to side • 10 Hip hinge abductions - sit back into a hip hinge and drive to the outsides of your feet, holding for 3 seconds • 9 Glute marches - keeping your hips up, drive one knee up at a time as you squeeze the opposite glute • 8 Glute bridge + abductions - perform a glute bridge and add an abduction rep at the top • 7 Knee-banded side lying clams - put your feet arch to arch to stay in place, and make sure to only move through the hip not the spine • 6 Band quadruped hip extensions - set up on hands and knees and kick one leg back at a time • 5 Knee-banded side lying hip raises - this is a tough one! Drive through your bottom knee and elbow as you separate your legs, opening your body up towards the ceiling • 4 Single leg RDLs - maintain a neutral spine as you hinge through one hip, trying to turn your body into a T. Hold on to a post for added stability if necessary • 3 Pulses per banded squat x 10 - perform 3 pulses, or mini reps, at the bottom of each squat rep • 2 twenty second side lying hip raise holds - same exercise as #5 but hold the top position for 20 seconds • 1 thirty second glute squeeze - squeeze as hard as you can! “What exercises should I be doing to lose weight/fat?” • I get asked this a lot, and have asked myself this a lot over the years, googling till my fingers fell off and ending up with workouts that had me doing a lot of jumping and running, leaving me feeling totally depleted (not my fave) • The truth is is that there is no one perfect exercise that will help you lose weight more than another-not even the ones I named above. But I name these exercises above because they are ones that use multiple muscle groups at one time-they are “compound” exercises. And hence the ones that will give you you’re biggest return on value. • They are also exercises that will help to build muscle-which if you look back to my post last week(directly below this one!), can help you increase your RMR and help you burn more calories even while at rest. • You can do Zumba, you can run, you can do yoga-but I do believe these exercises should make up the bulk of your training protocol if you are looking for fat loss that results in an overall “toned” body. • Do these consistently and correctly while maintaining your caloric deficit and you will see the simplicity that can come with weight/fat loss. • It isn’t always easy-but it can be uncomplicated! Why are we so stressed? . It comes down to 3 major things: . 1) Heart-rate variability. We have ~110,000 heart beats per day, every beat signalling our body to create 1 of 2 things: stress or resilience. . The fastest way to eliminate stress and increase resilience is to learn how to change the heart signal your sending your body, every second, every moment. . . 2) Faulty Breathing Patterns. We take ~20,000 breaths per day, with each breath signalling our body to create 1 of 2 things: fight/flight (stress) or rest/rejuvenate (resilience). . That does NOT mean we continue to blindly push through pain or go the opposite (as many in the medical field would have us do) and just stop lifting heavy all together. We learn & get better. . Injuries are a chance to improve our training methods & learn about how our body works. Understand how your body responds to certain training methods or specific technique errors. An educated athlete is something we should ALL aim to become. . Remember, your body adheres to a “scientific code.” Stress from training + recovery = adaption and growth. This is how we gain strength, muscle and improve our performance. When we disobey this code by over training and/or under recovering we increase risk of injury. When we lift with poor technique, this happens even faster. When an injury does occur, take time to learn why it happened & how you the methods you find to help really work. Do not just find someone to help you with passive treatments alone (manipulations, dry needling, cupping). Find someone who will educate you and teach you how to be a part of an active recovery process so you can become empowered to take control of your body! . The most common issue We see with our clients, is the confusion on how to read a nutrition label and understand what it all means. ⠀ If this is you, please read on!⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ In order for you to support your health and fitness goals, I am a strong believer that its so important to understand the nutrition labels of the food you are eating. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ And one of the best ways to learn how to read a nutrition label is to start reading the nutrition labels!⠀ ⠀ Get close and personal with them!!⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ On a nutrition label you’ll see “servings per container” or “number of servings” along with “serving size”. This is IMPORTANT, what you think is one servicing could end up being the whole container that has 5 servings. That is 5x the amount of calories you thought you where consuming. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Calories. The calories shown are per serving, not per container — unless there is only one serving per container. If it is in kilojoules, divide the energy value by 4.184.⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ Macronutrients this is your protein, carbs and fats) They are listed in grams on the food label and is per serving size. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Other things to consider are types of fats, fiber, sugar and vitamins/minerals. We ideally want to avoid trans fats, incorporate 25-35g of fiber per day, limit processed sugar and eat nutrient (vitamin and mineral) dense foods. So keeping these things in mind as we scan a nutrition label makes sense.⠀ ⠀ Understanding the label on the foods you eat, will help teach you what these foods composition of nutrients is. knowledge is always power.
