Its my Birthday today and I’m finally taking care of myself and getting the help I need. I believe everything happens for a reason and in order to be grateful for the highest highs, we need to experience the lowest of lows and I’ve definitely hit rock bottom. However, I can honestly say I am where Im supposed to be right now... Its been an overwhelming couple months/year and my alcohol and heavy drug use got out of control because of it. In the beginning of August, I stopped taking all of my medication because I wanted to hurt myself and I did. I almost had a stroke. I got back on them, started feeling better, but would continue to suppress these feelings by drinking, heavy drugs, prescription pills, or eating food till I was numb. One night those same feelings came back, and I drank everything I had, did every drug I had, and woke up on my floor in my blood and vomit. At one point this year, I found so many strangers telling me what type of person I was because of a silly TV show and I started to believe them, even though deep down inside I know I’m so much more than what I was made out to be, so I would “use” to escape and not feel the pain and pressure. This has been a long time coming, I would always make sure I was so incredibly busy so I wouldnt have to come to terms with myself and these feelings of having to prove myself to everyone. I completely lost sight of who I am. I’m grateful for this pause in the world, because Im able to do the work I need to be the best version of myself. My head is clear for the first time in a long time and I know I am enough the way God created me. Im 20 days sober now and happy. Its been the hardest thing Ive ever done but I’m a tough Polynesian cookie (a Samoa, if you will). I’m grateful to make it to 35. My heart and spirit keep telling me to go to mother nature so I’m going home to be with my family in Hawaii to remind myself of where I come from. I wanted to give an update since I’ve made my journey so public. My assistant updates on here when I ask him. I’ll see you on the flip side. To mark World Photography Day here is my portrait of Ralph, a dear friend and one of the most photogenic people I’ve ever photographed. We met by accident in Brighton in 1995 as he was walking out of a cafe and I knew as soon as I saw him that I had to take his portrait. This photograph has been published and exhibited many times over the last twenty five years and remains one of my best images. I remember making tiny adjustments to the position of the nose ring so that it added to the natural symmetry of his face. If it was even a millimetre off centre it unbalanced the composition. For most of my life, I’ve been traveling the world and meeting new people like it was second nature - there’s no doubt that’s why I wanted to become a journalist/storyteller. With this, I thought I had to “dream big” and “put in my time” to make it in this business, but all I really needed to do was work hard (doing anything and everything), build genuine relationships and friendships with those I work with and (most importantly) keep doing what works and stop doing what doesn’t. A whole week with Ro. Just me and him, father and son, while @portiajett was on her much deserved holidays. Wanted to post a nice pic of us two, til I realised I didn’t take any 😂 I did find this one though... it’s me blending into the sofa at 11.35 on Wednesday night, pram and schoolbag ready for nursery the next day, dinners cooked and kitchen cleaned, 6.30am alarm looming but still with 2 hours of life admin to complete and seriously considering cancelling all our plans for the rest of the week so I could find some sleep.. somewhere! Just SHATTERED!!!!!! So glad I didn’t cancel those plans. Ro and I have had the BEST week, can honestly say I’ve not had a week like it in his nearly 3 years. Could’ve cried multiple times just looking at my son and him looking at me in a way we’ve never been able to before. So incredibly proud of my boy. I tell him every day 🥰 he’s been a utter legend all week, I couldn’t have asked for a better boy. And truth is, this week HASN’T been overwhelming, it hasn’t been “testing” or “too much”. I’d actually do it all over again tomorrow. I’m just TIRED!!! 😂😂😂 seriously I thought there weren’t enough hours in the day before, but bloody hell!!! WHEN DO YOU SLEEP??? Have you ever thought about what you would do if war broke out in your home country? Yesterday I spent the afternoon with photo-journalist Hazir Reka / @hazirreka listening to stories and looking through his archive. As a student Hazir would be on the front-line of protests in Kosovo documenting the fight against authoritarianism, by the time war had broken out he found himself at the centre of the bloodiest conflict Europe had seen since WWII. After the fall of Yugoslavia, Kosovo faced aggressive expansion from Serbian Forces. Villages were burned to the ground, civilians were tortured, raped and brutally murdered. Hundreds of thousands fled the country as Kosovo lay as a centre ground in a battle between East vs West. Following a NATO led intervention, and the deaths of thousands more, the conflict came to an end in 1999 and in 2008 they gained their independence. The country today still faces a battle to stabilise their democracy and eradicate Sectarian division but they are on the path to forge their own future. I don’t think anyone really knows what they’d do during a war, until they are in one. For many the fight will be fought with guns, but for Hazir, he fought with his camera. He, and others like him, expose the reality of war, they force us to watch and without them the Kosovo I’m standing in today, would be a different place altogether. Being in my first SAG film was a dream come true! Facts: Many men and women have imbalances of estrogen and testosterone and of specific estrogens in both blood and fatty tissues. Too much of specific estrogens in your blood and tissue cause fat gains, slow loss of muscle and the reduction of both sexual performance and drive. Some women may have too much of the wrong kind of estrogen because of artificial synthetic hormone replacement and after being on a high fat, low protein diet. Men of all ages under great physical and emotional/mental stress, and specifically older men, suffer from decreasing testosterone and high relative estrogen. High estrogen can actually decrease the benefits of testosterone. Alcohol always makes matters worse by inhibiting your ability to clear estrogen from the blood stream, by acting as a central system depressant and also by decreasing zinc. And food? Well, even grapefruit can inhibit your livers ability to breakdown estrogen. Broccoli and cauliflower may mitigate some effects of some estrogens. Soy products may help your liver metabolize/excrete excess estrogen. So gentleman, if you think you are being manly with that whiskey you are actually quite opposite.
