Fifteen years ago, if anyone told me I’d be married and living in Kentucky, I’d of laughed. Not that I didn’t want to be married, though for years I was okay not being married—single life was fun, if torturous at times, and well, Kentucky wasn’t on my travel list. Now that I’m living here for nine years, married, twelve, I can’t imagine any other life. Though admittedly, this home makes a difference. This light makes a difference, it gives me hope. And let’s face it, we can all use a little hope these days. It’s as if I was meant to be in this space to evolve and grow my creative life. Our quarantine sanctuary. The wife and I are making best of this scary time. We haven’t left for a whole week. I havent been sleeping great lately (has anyone?!), so last night I went to bed really early, and the boys tucked me in like I was the kid & they were the parents—they snuggled up on either side of me & told me a story. They tucked my blankets in “like a burrito”—I got to choose burrito, taco, enchilada, or quesadilla for tuck-in style, and no, I do not have any idea what the differences are in those techniques. :) They kissed my forehead and then sang Silent Night VERY VERY LOUDLY directly into my ears. And still now this morning, every time I think of it, I smile. These are hard days, so I’m grabbing on to the sweet moments with both hands. I came home from my work-out this morning to this - and if you can imagine what this square looks like just multiply that to the size of the living room. An immediate sense of overwhelm fell over me as I surveyed the damage and wondered if doing anything for myself was even worth it, when I come home to something harder. We are going through some tough times arent we. And no, I dont mean towels on the floor or empty milk cartons on the floor or even potato chips for breakfast - although I dont advise doing any of those things - even the eater of the potato chips apparently decided this was not a good breakfast selection (and why were they in the living room?!?!). Its just a towel. Its just a milk carton. Its just potato chips. We can do hard things mama, even when the little thinga become mountains. We can climb them. One foot in front of the other - do a toe if you have to - or take a nap, get some rest. We can do this. Ho avuto il privilegio di essere contattato dalla PM Maria Monteleone, Procuratore Aggiunto che coordina i Magistrati che si occupano di violenza di genere e contro i minori presso la Procura di Roma. La PM Monteleone è una donna incredibile, piena di passione per i diritti umani e per la giustizia nella sua più pura accezione. Si sente subito, la sua profonda umanità, da come parla del suo lavoro. E il fatto che abbia seguito la nostra denuncia in prima persona per me è un onore. Ora il caso è nelle mani della Corte Europea di Giustizia, una delle poche istituzioni sovranazionali in grado di intervenire attivamente su uno Stato Membro. Troppe persone stanno soffrendo a causa della criminale politica degli hotspot. Ormai tutti sanno che gli hotspot sono dei lager moderni, sono sbagliati, non dovrebbero esistere, eppure nessuno alza un dito ai piani alti. Ma ora la PM Monteleone ha dato alla Corte di Giustizia la possibilità di fare la differenza. E stavolta devono farla. La PM Monteleone ha fatto molto più del dovuto - avrebbe potuto archiviare il caso, sarebbe stato più facile, e invece l’ha preso a cuore spingendolo fino a livello europeo. Non tutti lo farebbero, sopratutto nella magistratura. Ma lei sì, lei sta facendo la differenza, ancora una volta. E questo per noi è inestimabile. I had to get over so many stories I was telling myself before I created my business, podcast, and especially the Motherhood Studies certification. Of what people will think, if I’ll be judged, if what I have to offer is ‘enough’. Putting yourself ‘out there’ (on and offline) takes inner work. But here’s a reframe that has been helpful for me and might be for you too if you’re working on your own ‘stories’. The experiences you’ve been through, particularly painful ones, can help others. We can frame this as a responsibility... If it’s taken 10 years to learn what you know, and you can craft it into a book or a podcast or a course or a conversation, then keeping this from others is withholding opportunities from them. Particularly if knowledge has come from privilege of opportunity that others haven’t had access to. We all have something to share. And self-sabotaging or self-silencing can be just another function of our socialization. To keep small, quiet, and compliant for fear of being ‘too much’ (because we’re convinced we’re ‘not enough’). I’m 35 today. When I look at this picture of myself, I see someone totally different from the person I’ve seen in past pictures. First of all, in those pictures, I was often 33, 32, or sometimes even 28 or 5. People say age is nothing but a number, but that’s not true. It’s the way we as humans measure the amount of time you’ve been on the Earth. I think people forget that. When I first moved to LA almost four years ago, it was a huge adjustment. I went from having tons of favorite restaurants in Chicago to having basically none in LA. Now, I would say I have a few favorite restaurants in LA, even though it’s nowhere close to how many I had in Chicago. It feels good to admit that. When I look at this person, I’m so proud of all that he’s accomplished. Ten years ago, I didn’t even have an instagram account. Now, I have one with over 600 posts. I also have a Twitter account and a Facebook which is not public. Sorry for the long post. If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading. Y’all I have not thought much about tithing during these crazy times. But one night, I got this HUGE feeling that I needed to tithe from my full amount of income this summer. It was a painful chunk of change 😩 But I did it immediately on 8/26 at 12:16AM. I wasn’t expecting anything in return but just wanted to honor God. Since I tithed: 1. Day 1: I received a letter dated 8/27, LITERALLY THE NEXT DAY, that I’d surprisingly be receiving a chunk of money slightly MORE than the amount I’d just tithed. 😳 2. Day 8: Without my knowledge/request, my rent was paid for by someone other than me. 🥰 3. Day 13: I got news of a contract that is incredibly well paid. 🥳 4. Day 13: My credit score went up a cute 5 points for no reason that I’m aware of. 🧐 5. Fully expecting many more blessings & I am so excited to keep giving ☺️ I didn’t wanna share at first bc 1. It’s my business & 2. Ppl are struggling so much right now, especially financially. But my dad has implored me to spread the good news & encourage others to trust God. His pastor told him to try tithing for 3-6 months and if it doesn’t work for him, then the church will give the tithes back. That’s some real confidence! But don’t listen to others, listen closely to what the Spirit of God is telling you to do with your finances right now. Is it to tithe? Donate to a cause? Save? Invest? Start 👏🏽 your 👏🏽business? Slow down... While I love what Ive been doing/career choice it also gives me a lot of anxiety due to the hustle culture thats happening these days... I constantly have to remind myself to slow down, its not a race, rest... My girlfriend reminding me to get better sleep. Take care of my health. This pandemic honestly made me realize how important my health is... And that at the end of the day you cant be taking photos, dancing, or making FIRE beats (lol) if youre dead... (A bit dark I know) but its the truth... While its difficult to share I also know alot of people in this generation and younger generation that have the same hustle mindset. So, we broke up. I stopped checking in on him every morning. I stopped always doing my hair and makeup. I stopped asking him what he wanted for dinner first. Sometimes I have no good very bad days where everything goes wrong in small but aggravating ways. Where the time just feels utterly wasted, where nothing connects or moves as it should. & then I remember the avocado pits blooming in the windowsill, which took TWO MONTHS to show any progress whatsoever. Two months of slooooowly growing ugly, tentacle-like roots which I was half-convinced had sprouted mold or fungus because they looked so weird & gross. Two months till I got to see sunlight filtered through bright green leaves, revealing an intricate pattern of veins. Sometimes things take time. Sometimes the time they take is ugly & difficult & weird. Sometimes you have days that feel like grit & fungus. That’s okay. Fungus is pretty cool, really. When You Come Back to Me is slowly going live tonight but I already feel like I’ve had a hundred book releases all rolled into one. The reader response has been beyond anything I could imagine. (The photo is the scene from this morning when I woke up to a barrage of love for this book). And this one is special to me. Maybe more than any other as I write this. I set out to write a story about self-acceptance and self-love but what also came through (I hope) is how important the bond is between a parent and a child, and how devastating it can be when it’s absent. Or not fulfilled the way it should be. With every book I write there’s a piece of my experience imbedded in the words because it’s imbedded in me. And that will always be that way if I’m writing from the heart. And my loss is not just a loss. This experience is so much about what I’ve gained. The gifts I now have, and the appreciation for my sweet Talia that grows with every passing day. So when a book that is this close to my heart is received as this one has been, it is truly special and I am so grateful to all of my early readers, my beta readers, and just everybody who has taken these boys into their hearts. Last night the air quality index exceeded 500 in Portland and smoke started to seep into our apartment. We could smell it inside, which is not a good sign and we dont have an air filter 😩 SO I shoved some paper towels in all the cracks in our front door and window, taped it shut, and then boiled a big pot of water with rosemary and thyme (I didnt have fresh herbs but I did have italian seasoning!) Weve also been drinking Breathe Right tea and Throat Coat tea by @tradmedicinals ; anything to help our lungs right now. Ive had a lot of anxiety these past few days, often feeling short of breath and wondering if its from the smoke, or just internalized panic (mostly that one) but last night it felt good to laugh a bit. I never thought this is how Id be spending my weekend before Fall term, but here we are. Not everyone has been as lucky as we are, and lots of people have been displaced or lost their homes to these wildfires. So here’s how I see it. Covid doesn’t care who you voted for. It doesn’t care about your beliefs or your opinions. It’s only agenda is to spread. And the more it spreads the more people die, the further our economy collapses, the potential for returning to normalcy diminishes, and general human suffering continues to spike. We are fighting an invisible enemy and currently it is winning. We don’t have a vaccine. We don’t have a magic bullet. We don’t even fully understand this virus yet. So we need to fight back with the tools we do have in our arsenal. And at the moment the tactics PROVEN most effective are preventative. First and foremost, wearing a mask. A sneeze right now from an infected person could be deadly. That is if their face and yours are uncovered. Wearing a mask could save your life. It could save the lives of your loved ones. It could save a strangers life. It is a simple act of safety and kindness for yourself and others. Sure, it’s an inconvenience, but so is dying, or an economic depression. But I’d argue those are more inconvenient. This is not political. For the first time in history we are GLOBALLY united against a common enemy. And the only way we are going to beat it is if we fight it together. So pretty please. Why are you in therapy? Sometimes when one reveals they are in therapy, people always wonder why? What mental and psychological illness are you suffering from? What grave and horrendous trauma and abuse must have occured in your life for your to get into therapy? How weak and vulnerable are you to be unable to deal with what life throws at you? . . The truth is people do not go to therapy only if they have a mental or psychological illness. No, having grave trauma and abuse is not a prerequisite to seek therapy. No, those who choose therapy are not weak. . . Sometimes, we choose to seek therapy because we may feel stuck, we may not have the tools, the language and the know-how to deal with certain situations and circumstances. Yes, we are an amalgamation of our upbringing, of certain traits and patterns of behaviour, but sometimes we need some external guidance to approach a situation differently. And truth be told, adulting can be extremely difficult and alienating. The assumption is that adults just know things, but how many of us really do? We seek counsel from those we trust, but they could be as clueless as we are. Therapy can be a non-judgemental space where we are allowed to express our truest, most vulnerable, most horrible, most cruel selves...and we all know those forms of ourselves. . . Therapy can be like going to the gym for your brain, for your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, we choose to run alone and get fitter physically. Sometimes, we go to the gym, or buy weights, or other exercise material to help us. Thats what therapy can be.. a therapist has tips, tricks and tools for your mind, to get fitter emotionally and mentally. It is a space for healing. It is a learning ground.
