New golfer, new gains 🤙 Here’s the 2.5 month progression with my student Chase. He’s been working with me on his golf swing since the last week of June. He came to me with your typical above average golfer’s tendencies. Issues begin straight away in the takeaway. Too much forearm roll with a lack of wrist hinge, which pulls the clubhead inside, flat and behind him. From there, he stands the club up very late through supination of the lead forearm, causing him to get quite a bit across the line. The natural pattern you’ll see from there is a steep shaft in the early part of the downswing, followed by a very late shallowing move where the lead side of the body elevates (his specific shallowing mechanism). Chest stops turning, club drops underneath the plane, and then you’re swinging too far from inside-out. Blocks, hooks, big time stall of the body and tons of timing required where the golfer has to flip the hands in order to save it. Nothing like that now with his new move. No more forearm roll in the takeaway. He’s able to retain his arm structure to the top so the shaft alignment is in a very functional spot for his length of swing. From there, the club shallows early and therefore he’s able to retain his body tilts and not elevate the lead side so much in the downswing. Body keeps turning through impact, clubhead does not get “stuck” behind him and he’s able to rely on less timing. More neutral club path. More passive release, and a much tighter dispersion. One thing you’ll notice is that he doesn’t have a lot of wrist set early, and creates that hinge in transition. Sometimes it causes him to get narrow and throw off his sequence marginally, but that will be cleaned up shortly. Really happy with the work he’s put in. Proud of my guy @chandlerblanchet for his top 5 finish this week on the @kornferrytour 👊 We’ve been working on a couple of very important details these last 2 months and also his scores weren’t reflecting it, he was inching closer and closer to where we wanted him with his swing. His tendency has always been to slide very aggressively towards the target in the downswing. Upwards of 7+ inches, which is more than double the PGA TOUR average. That number is right around 3 to 3.5 inches. As a result of that, his body gets way too far ahead of the ball, leading to a steep angle of attack, a path that gets too far right occasionally (leading to push cuts), and a lot of heel strikes. His body compensates at the bottom in an attempt to balance his pressure out by adding a ton of trail side bend, which is really what creates that big miss. Our priority has been on limiting that lateral movement. Creating rehearsals where he feels like his pelvis is actually staying back in transition (no lateral movement whatsoever) which allows him to keep the chest more centred over the pelvis (less of a separation that was creating the excessive trail side bend), while also shallowing out his attack angle, moving his club path more from outside-in, and thus removing those big push cuts with the longer clubs. He’s *feeling* no lateral movement but in reality he’s simply sliding less than he was before. Closer to that range of 3 inches. He’s been hitting some solid fades these last couple weeks (his preference) and we had a productive FaceTime to put it all together. New gains for a new student 🤙 @davidleegolf1013 David started working with me about 2 months ago. Had a very typical good player’s pattern of struggling with lots of pull draws. His club path was getting too far from the inside, the club was getting “stuck” behind him, and he had to flip at the bottom in order to avoid a big push fade, which would lead to those pull draws when his timing was off. Our first priority was on making him understand how his pivot (body tilts and rotation) through the downswing we’re creating a lot of the issue. When your lead side elevates too fast in the downswing, you’ll commonly see the hands and club drop behind you. If your body doesn’t rotate a ton to support that move, you’ll have the same tendencies that Dave has. As a result, we made sure he kept the lead side lower in transition, and added MUCH more body rotation in the downswing. Getting him more “open” and with cleaner tilts allowed him to stall less at the bottom, and therefore the clubhead wasn’t stuck behind. The rotation got the hands to exit more inward through impact, also leading to a more passive release pattern. A more neutral club path, less variance on the clubface, and therefore less dispersion. Taking some long drive concepts from guys like @joshkochgolf and @tourtempo to see if I can teach myself to ramp up the speed like @brysondechambeau. Made 100 swings all out on Friday. I started in the 122 range and got consistently up to 138-139 and had 2 swings over 140 on the radar probably mid 130s on Trackman. Here I’m trying get pressure to trigger left before bouncing right then slinging the club back as fast as I could and unwinding all out. As my tempo got faster so did the swing speed. It’s crazy how far Bryson is hitting it but what impresses me the most is how straight he hits it. He missed a lot of fairways but your margin for error is so small when you are hitting it 350-360. He didn’t hit anything off of the planet and knew where his misses would be. What does working with TPI certified professionals look like? The TPI team approach looks like this. My golfer @p_dizzle133 with @uwfwgolf sees her swing coach @impactgolfacademy and they work on her swing. When he sees something that needs to be worked on, he sends me videos of their practice sessions and lets me know what she has to improve with her movement. From there I use my bag of tricks to get her body to move the way he suggest. I send back the videos to her coach and we keep in constant communication to help our golfer become the best player she can. She has made amazing progress over the course of the year with the consistent work she’s put in. Looking forward to great things from her in her college career! This is why long drive is awesome! Watching people hit a golf ball over a quarter mile never gets old 💪🏻This was from the finals of the 2019 Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun when @timburkegolf and I faced off. Tim went first and hit a monster drive on his last swing, with the ball rolling out to 474 yards. Then I was up, and on my last swing I crushed mine and almost caught him, with my shot coming up 8 yards short at 466 yards. Imagine hitting it 466 yards and still losing 🤣🤣 This is definitely one of my favorite matches to look back on. Great lesson with @alexbucknergolf yesterday working on my shortgame. I was really excited to get to work with him after hearing such great things and he did not disappoint. His knowledge and explanation was awesome.⠀ ⠀ After going through basic chipping, bunker play and pitching we made some small adjustments to technique. ⠀ ⠀ First video we changed lead wrist extension at address to help radius control. A couple of months into my work with @wmansfieldgolf and things are looking tidy 👊 He came to me with a fairly typical really good player’s pattern. He would get to the top of the backswing with the shaft a little laid off. Before starting down, his trail shoulder would move externally to the max amount possible, meaning his shaft would get even further laid off. Once he’s in that position, the balance point of the club has nowhere to go but in front of him in transition, meaning the shaft would steepen a small amount as he begins his downswing. That move would force his body tilts and arm structure through impact to change in an effort to compensate for the steepening shaft so that he doesn’t hit big pulls. The common tendency from there is to suffer from a pretty big two way miss, especially when you’re swinging at the speed that many of these TOUR players do nowadays. Our first priority was on realigning the shaft at the top of the backswing into a more “across” position. Really we just didn’t want him to be laid off. As a combo to that, we wanted his trail shoulder to also be more external as he realigned the shaft, so that it couldn’t push even more external in transition, which is what was getting him too laid off. Once that move was taken care of, we focused on the drill you see in the first video. A floatie on his trail arm, to keep his arm structure nice and wide, and that way the balance point of the club can pitch behind him so that the shaft lays down appropriately. If you’re someone who gets NARROW in transition, that’s a great drill for you to work on. Now that the clubhead stays inside the hand path way better by late in the downswing, there’s no longer a necessity to come out of the shot and compensate his arm structure, so he can turn freely and get through the impact interval with a more passive release pattern. More consistent start lines, limited curve, and therefore more predictable results. Really good action here! One thing to takeaway from this final pairing is how they allow their hips to rotate freely back and the trail leg extends in the backswing which helps them create speed. #makingbirdies - @pelligolf on Instagram
