Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ continues to fascinate art observers with its compositional secrets. Recently, a scientist by the name of Pascal Cotte discovered a never-before-seen sketch beneath the masterpiece. Cotte’s study of the portrait marks the first time a spolvero has been detected in the legendary work which is evidence that da Vinci created an initial sketch of the famous portrait before painting it. 155 years ago on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger informed the people of Galveston, TX that slavery had ended. Sometimes called Liberation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates that day. Although not yet a national holiday, it is recognized in nearly every state. • On Juneteenth 2020, we share two daguerreotypes, each depicting an African American. Dating to the 1840s, the first was created more than a decade before the American Civil War began, while slavery was still legal in the southern United States. It features an elderly woman who appears to be in her 70s, placing her date of birth in the 18th century. She wears a white lace bonnet and collar and a dark-colored dress. Although she – and her photographer – remain unidentified, the daguerreotype speaks volumes about the woman, particularly her status as a literate member of society: she holds a book and eyeglasses and one arm rests near a stack of books. • @zoebgarrett researched the other daguerreotype, an image of Jeremiah A. Wade, a Civil War veteran from Ohio. Born in 1829 to parents who identified as “Mulatto” in census records, Wade did, too, until early 1862, when he listed his race as “White” to enlist in the Union Army when black Americans could not yet serve. He died in 1898 and was survived by 7 children. Wade’s photograph was taken by James Presley Ball, a well-known African-American photographer who documented the horrors and triumphs of life for 19th-century black Americans. He documented lynchings and photographed Frederick Douglass as well as celebrations of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. С Верой Федоровной Вяземской (урожденной Гагариной), женой своего ближайшего друга князя Петра Андреевича Вяземского, Пушкин познакомился в Одессе. Княгиня была наслышана о непростом характере молодого поэта и поначалу приняла его настороженно, но вскоре они подружились – крепко и на всю жизнь. Они переписывались, «княгине-лебедушке» Пушкин доверял самые интимные свои тайны. Она в шутку называла его «приемным сыном», он же хотел, чтобы Вера Федоровна была посаженной матерью на его свадьбе. После роковой дуэли с Дантесом Вяземская неотступно находилась у постели умирающего друга. Вера Федоровна прожила 95 лет. Пережила мужа, с которым у нее сложились отношения столь же теплые, сколь и свободные. Пережила семерых из восьмерых детей. И лучших своих друзей тоже пережила. Но до последних дней сохранила чистый, звонкий смех, который «в другой казался бы непристойным, а в ней восхищал; ибо она скрашивала и приправляла его умом, которым беспрестанно искрился разговор её». Oggi vi mostriamo la pala di Martino di Bartolomeo di Biagio, (Siena, 1365/1370 - prima del 26 aprile 1435), Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina dAlessandria, con donatore, tempera e oro su tavola. Iscrizione: MCCCCIIII aprile fu il mese preghiamo Dio per chi fa le spese [aprile 1404 (calendario pisano, calendario gregoriano 1403) è stato il mese in cui preghiamo Dio per colui che paga le spese]; liscrizione è ora difficile da leggere ma è stata registrata da Da Morrona. Provenienza: Pisa, Convento di San Domenico; Pisa, Camposanto Monumentale (1810); Pisa, Museo Civico (1906), poi Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, dal 1949. Raffigura il Matrimonio Mistico di Santa Caterina dAlessandria secondo liconografia prevalente dellultimo quarto del XIV secolo, che mostra la santa che si unisce in matrimonio con Gesù Bambino. La Vergine incoraggia il matrimonio, attirando il braccio di Caterina verso suo figlio in un grazioso gioco di gesti. La giovane principessa è vista di profilo, inginocchiata su un grande frammento della ruota dentata che simboleggia il suo martirio.
