Little throwback of my first release ever, six years ago: my master thesis on Cold War architecture as pictured in James Bond movies between 1962 and 1979. It aims at showing the links between the secret military architectures that emerged throughout the 20th century and its re-interpretation in the 007 movies, far from being pure creations. This 200 pages essay took me almost 2 years to complete and is the hardest thing I have been working on ever, but maybe the most fulfilling. #Silberfischchen kennen wir fast alle, #Papierfischchen eher nicht. Den Unterschied zwischen den beiden #Insekten kann man ja auch kaum sehen, da benötigt man schon eine Lupe. Dabei sind Papierfischchen mittlerweile durchaus verbreitet. Ihre Lieblingsspeise ist Zellulose, also Papier und Kartonage aller Art. Im Unterschied zu Silberfischchen kommen sie auch in trockener Umgebung sehr gut klar, und weil sie gern die dunklen Ecken und Nischen von Häusern bevölkern, bekommt man sie nicht sehr häufig zu Gesicht. Dort, wo sie ungestört leben können, richten sie große Zerstörungen an – #Archive und #Bibliotheken müssen sich wirklich was dazu einfallen lassen! Im Landesarchiv NRW sind in allen Häusern Fallen aufgestellt worden, die regelmäßig überprüft werden, und – toi toi toi – bisher ist alles im grünen Bereich. Leider finden wir immer wieder in den Behörden, für die wir zuständig sind, Papierfischchen. Befallenes Schriftgut können wir natürlich nicht ins Archiv holen, deswegen gehen alle Akten, die angeliefert werden, erst mal für 24 h in die Tiefkühltruhe. Papierfischchen sind zwar tolle #Überlebenskünstler, aber gegen -18°C sind sie nicht immun. Unser #Kollege Christian Schmatz hat das tolle #Plakat entworfen, dass uns alle daran erinnert, die Augen offen zu halten. Es ist immer wieder toll, wie kreativ das Kollegium ist! In 2019 Jan Wenzel came across Martin Gross during the research for his book Das Jahr 1990 freilegen and took over many of his notes. Now, 30 years apart, they were perceived by critics as clairvoyant, precise, stylistically brilliant observations of the year of change. Bad Flowers for @spike_art_magazine Dream team with the brilliant fellow Miamian @roeethridge // In some two-story mall off of US 1, the kind with open air hallways, I was given a battery of psychological tests by my therapist’s wife. It was the early 90s; I was fourteen at the time, didn’t much like school, and started wearing black lipstick and loitering around Coconut Grove. The mall therapists ran their business like a Ponzi scheme. He saw my aunt, and then she and her husband in couples therapy; which he then told me about. He also saw my father occasionally, or the two of us. He suggested we all get tested. We were like a south Florida therapy pod... When I learned how to give the Rorschach test as a young graduate student, it was made known that if we wanted to take the test unobstructed by what we were about to learn, we better do it now. I looked at the cards. I tried to remember them through adolescent eyes; only one came into view but the perception of it in the blot was immediate. Card VI. Trees, plants, grasses, stones, at water’s edge, their reflection in the water. A landscape. Card VI is the sex card; it is the one that looks like road kill, though that’s a very bad answer to give. The card is supposed to suss out sexual problems; its blot is considered the most vaginal in the deck – though aren’t all inkblots vaguely vaginal? – in tension with a kind of phallic figure at the top. They want to see how you reconcile the two, no less the supposedly overt sexual panorama. Roadkill, for example, would not only be marked morbid, it would also be considered passive-aggressive, though as a response that tries to make use of the entirety of the blot, it shows a sense of personal aspiration. Morbid, passive-aggressive, adolescent, sexual ambition in a mall in the middle of Miami. But that wasn’t my response, at least at the time. The 8th edition of The Wildlife Techniques Manual has been published and CKWRI had a big role in this go to reference book for wildlife biologists and managers. Five faculty (Fidel Hernandez, Tim Fulbright, Lenny Brennan, Humberto Perotto, and David Hewitt) and a Ph.D. student (Zackary Pearson) from CKWRI were chapter authors. In addition, nine alumni from CKWRI were also chapter authors in the this two-volume series. It has been far too long since we last played a game of Westcombe Book Club, and so let us now right that wrong. It will hardly come as a surprise to you all out there, that I own a copy of the pictured, recently published book. I probably should have spent longer over it, but instead, wolfed it down - with a lot of tea and many of Annas petite madeleine cakes - and finished it over breakfast following this mornings milking, a mere 24 hours after I started it. Yes: I am a big boy now and can read ALL of the words! I cant decide if I found it a depressing read or a hopeful read. Probably erring on the depressing to be honest though. A book about the insane greed of man and of how little power the majority of us have over our destinies. But then again, I am a bit of a pessimist and see death and pestilence where others see rainbows. Although I live and work on a fairly large farming estate in the deep, sunblessed English south, farming deep, rich, fertile soils, while James Rebanks lives on a tough hill farm in the cold, rainy far north of the country, I was delighted to read the words of another English farmer who shares a similar farming outlook with ourselves at Westcombe. The book does highlight, however, that both farms are not your typical British farms. Rebanks farm appears to receive a lot of financial help for the excellent ecological goods that it provides. While we process much of our milk into farmhouse cheese and can be a little bit more of a price maker than a price taker. Thus, both parties are lucky, able to explore ways to farm in more sustainable ways than others can afford to do. And I suppose thats where the pessimism comes in: most farms are caught under the commodity prices cosh. Anyway, well worth a read, and I hope many people read this book, although - pessimism alert here - the people who really do need to read books like these, most likely will not. The journey to the wrecked farmlands of Kentucky and Iowa should terrify anyone, and the final three sentences of the book will, if youre like me, make you cry. Im quietly sitting in my office today, returning for another look at Andres Gonzalezs American Origami book, co-published by FW: Books and Light Work this year. I was wondering if this in-depth, multi-vantage point project made by Andres (@andresvgonzalez) over the course of six years would impact me as much as before on further reading, and if I could begin to fully understand Andres time in communities scarred by American school mass shootings, interviewing survivors and family members, going through personal and official archives, and working out the specificities and shared traumas therein. Well, of course American Origami does continue to impact on me - its an incredible project. Also included is a transcript of Cage’s 1983 performance, MUSHROOMS et Variationes. The second volume is the inaugural reproduction of Cage’s 1972 portfolio, Mushroom Book, authored in collaboration with illustrator Lois Long and botanist Alexander H. Smith. En m’enseignant le graphisme et la direction artistique, on m’a placé un pouvoir entre les mains. Celui de manipuler les images. J’ai conscience que ce pouvoir peut être utilisé de la manière la plus noble comme la plus contestable. C’est pourquoi mon projet de fin d’étude traite de la propagande. Je m’interroge sur la manière dont l’émotion et les codes graphiques sont utilisés pour convaincre. La propagande étant l’origine même de mon métier, je ne pouvais entrer dans le monde professionnel sans en questionner ses mécanismes. 🔥 #outnow 🔥 La genesi del corpus incisorio del futurista Luigi Russolo (Portogruaro, 30 aprile 1885 – Laveno-Mombello, 4 febbraio 1947) è legata a doppio filo agli stimoli culturali recepiti quando questi, ancora giovanissimo, si trasferì a Milano con l’intento di intraprendere la carriera artistica. Partendo quindi dalla sua formazione, Mattia Lapperier si avvale della documentazione reperita presso l’Archivio del ‘900 del Mart di Rovereto e di alcuni fondi privati, per effettuare una sostanziale rilettura dell’intera raccolta di acqueforti russoliane, ridefinendone, almeno in parte, la cronologia e operando, per la prima volta, una distinzione tra le molte tirature realizzate e le varie tecniche di incisione sperimentate. L’individuazione di tali diversi approcci è stata possibile anche grazie alle indicazioni provenienti dall’erede dello stampatore che realizzò almeno due tirature di gran parte delle acqueforti, in virtù dello studio delle lastre calcografiche custodite presso la Biblioteca Civica Nicolò Bettoni di Portogruaro. We had the pleasure of working with @love_all_day_rcd on this 2xLP for @normchamber a Seattle-based musician who sculpts beautiful and challenging electronic music. We chose to really inhabit the many sides that the title “Facets” elicits. The sleeves a have full-color offset interior with glossy lamination. The exterior was screen printed in house. The glue flaps are exposed and used as structural design elements. So it’s a bit like and inside out record sleeve. The diecut holes reveal specific colors that relate to the 4 sides of the records. Last up is screen printing the inner sleeves. Big thanks to @rohnerpress on the die cut and assembly. They do amazing work and have helped us out so many times! Also shout out to Lowitz & Sons for coordinating the offset work, lamination, and for precision paper consultation. I really can’t believe I ever got to go anywhere for work. Even when I was going places, it was with a sense a disbelief that anybody would send me anywhere to talk to people and write and put together stories that I hoped would matter. That feeling of wow and whoa and holy shit (all branches of gratitude) was always compounded with an additional sense of disbelief that perpetuates and makes travel a wonder: You can wake up in the morning in your own bed and be on the other side of the world by end of the day! That sort of thing never gets old. As of late, that strain of wonder has intensified. Travel: a miracle, a lucky blessing. Anyway, the nice and talented people @travelandleisure very kindly sent me to THE AZORES and the piece is in their August issue and now online and it’s the kind of story where a bacteria-obsessed scientist took me to the fabled mouth of hell and fed me geothermal cuisine and there were volcanoes and rainbows and towering hedges of hydrangeas that curled and ripped like waves — and there were warm, welcoming people who took the time to make sure I would understand the special kind of faith that runs trough their communities and through their islands. In the end, this is a story about eternity and about measuring and holding onto your beliefs. Thanks to @thecatarinamaia @_raisadeoliveira @marina__c__nunes for the guidance and generosity. How talented is this artist? It is lovely to see a factual book which is unashamed to be decorative. It’s seriously an honor that my Dad @lenscapesphotography trusted me with his very first website! 🤩🥳 He’s an old school photographer from Hilo, with a Domke camera bag always attached to his shoulder, ready to pull over and get da shot wherever we are. He’d have us [kids] tag along / help him at gigs, meetings, events, and all his errands to develop endless rolls of film. We were there so often that the shop owners would let us into their darkroom! I suppose this is what sparked my interest in photography... 📸✨ - I’d roll my eyes every time my dad told us to “stand over there, because the lighting is nice.” But now our childhood home is filled with endless memories— photos, albums, slides, vintage camera gear, and accessories that he’s handed down to me over time. I’m so thankful that he documented us in this way, my memories are that much more vibrant 🌞🌈 - If you told me I’d be following my father’s creative footsteps, I wouldn’t have believed you... but here I am, seeing the world in frames, taking advantage of beautiful lighting and pulling over to get my own shots. I remember as a kid walking into Australian Geographic stores and being amazed by all the incredible science-y toys there and wanting to leave with everything. Growing up, I learned the brand is much bigger than just a toy store and does a fantastic job of championing Australian stories many of us arent aware of – especially in wildlife conservation.⠀ ⠀ Im so thrilled I could contribute a story of my own to the Sept/Oct issue, on sale now, about how mans best friend has been enlisted to save Australias endangered animals. I learned a lot about our canine friends, their incredible potential in scientific research and some of the inspiring people working with them (plus I got to pat a few good doggos).⠀ ⠀ Shout out to Natalie Filmer and Madeleine De Gabriele at @zoosvictoria for your guidance and arranging behind the scenes access at Healesville Sanctuary and Dunkeld, experts David Williams, Naomi Hodgens, Dr La Toya Jamieson, Chris Hartnett and Marissa Parrott for your insights.
