Schoolโs out! Daddy Day Care is in. These beautiful Emu chicks were spotted recently at our Kalamurina Wildlife sanctuary, SA, where the species is a much-loved sight. Male Emus are responsible for egg incubation and then looking after the young birds (until they are about 12 months old). This rustic Luwi Bush Camp stands in a small grove of mahogany trees and has great views over a floodplain to the Luwi riverbed beyond. Although the camp is away from the main Luangwa River, there are two permanent lagoons here, each with an impressive population of hippo and crocodile. This camp houses only 5 chalets which means that individual attention is tailored for each guestsโ experience. Each chalet is en-suite. The main area of the camp is comprised of a thatched roof and sandy floor, housing the bar and library. Other communal areas can be found dotted around under trees in the shade. A late one and one that inspires me a lot of peace - what better than bathing ellies at dusk ? Itโs been a hell of a month, and iโm excited for a break from the lemons. Truly. Iโve not really been knowing what to post recently. My feed is always usually colourful and I feel itโs all blending in a little too much. My recent work in France and Sicily is very much relevant to the approach i have to conservation, always trying to reconcile man and nature, though perhaps it is not so obvious - itโll be the object of my next article. Beauty and the appreciation of it is a quintessential human trait, one that seems to appease, reconcile and unite. It comes in all forms, the one we create - architecture, art, literature, etc - and the one we notice in our environment. Natural beauty only exists through human eyes, but how powerful is it to almost unanimously take for beautiful what is already laid out for us? Aesthetics are not really sufficient grounds to justify conservation (though thatโs debatable) but are very much a step forward for spontaneous individual and therefore collective action. What do you - we - feel, in the face of beauty? I would have posted a shot that stayed with me from the ancient Greek temples of Selinunte in southwestern Sicily but my hard drive is currently somewhere lost on a plane. So the next newsletter will hopefully take you to timeless places with its words only; intertwining ancient Greece and nature preservation. And maybe images will pop up at some point.
