Riley’s family learned of his stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma cancer diagnosis on Easter Sunday of 2019. Riley had multiple tumors throughout his bone marrow and needed aggressive treatment as soon as possible. Op zoek naar routine, op zoek naar evenwicht, op zoek naar rust en naar ademruimte. Op zoek naar die beruchte roze wolk, waakzaam voor het zwarte gat. Genieten van het kleine wonder, maar toch ook voldoende waakzaam blijven voor je eigen en elkaars welzijn. Je was als papa al zo nutteloos in het hele zwanger/wee/persproces, en dan wil je na amper 10 dagen de kersverse mama niet in de steek laten. Want zo voelt die eerste dag terug naar het werk. Bij ons zijn er wat voedingsissues, maar ik wil me niet voorstellen hoe extra stresserend het moet zijn als je dagelijks naar het ziekenhuis moet, als je eigen goede zorgen niet kunnen volstaan, of als je kindje echt iets mankeert. Dan zijn 10 dagen al helemaal te weinig. Ik heb ook geluk met mijn empathische werkgever @elkevandenbrandt en ons #teamelke, dat mijn afwezigheid opving. Ik kon zo het wettelijke vaderschapsverlof van 10 dagen verdubbelen. En dat was nodig. Onnoemelijk veel respect voor jonge ouders die al na 10 dagen het onmogelijke mogelijk maken. Maar, beste verkozenen des volks, doe er iets aan. Geef ieder gezin de kans om enigszins op adem te komen. Geef papa’s of andere soorten partners voldoende ruimte om de zorg van de baby te helpen opnemen, of de kersverse mama zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen. In het federaal parlement hebben @evitawillaert en @gilles.vandenburre daar een mooi voorstel voor, tekenen die handel! Na een kleine maand ouderschapsverlof was vandaag mijn eerste werkdag - als nieuwbakken papa dus. Spannend, maar met een geruster hart, omdat we na 25 dagen toch al een evenwicht hebben gevonden. Almost 11 years ago I moved to Nashville to be a songwriter. It has been a long road. I worked full time and wrote at night for several years. I used to watch my kids cry as I’d leave the driveway for the second time each day. I eventually worked my way into a part time position. The deal was, I’d make less money but have more time to write and pursue music. Making less money meant giving up all of my hobbies, sacrificing nights out with family and friends, sacrificing vacations, having to sell possessions in order to afford studio time, equipment, etc. Pursuit of this dream has demanded A LOT but not just from me. The people in this picture have sacrificed an awful lot too. We’ve literally built our lives around making this dream a reality. My kids have missed a lot of time with daddy. My wife has had to play the role of a single mom soooo many days and nights. They had to live on a much stricter budget than they normally would have so I could chase this dream. I promised them I would never give up. I wanted to a number of times, but these wonderful humans kept putting wind in my sails. Last week, when this picture was taken, I signed a contract with @seagaylemusic . I am officially a professional songwriter. No more working a day job to keep my side hustle alive. No more getting home from one job and leaving to go to another. No more living on such a strict budget. Giuli y yo estamos flotando en una nube, disfrutando cada minuto de este niño hermoso, muchas gracias a todos por sus mensajes y muestras de cariño! Es difícil expresar en palabras lo que se siente ser padre, pero por supuesto ni poder imaginar lo que siente la madre desde el día uno de la concepción. Si bien es cierto siempre con Fabri y ahora con Francesco he tenido un súper contacto con la barriga a diario, les he hablado y besado todas la noches, para la mamá que lo lleva adentro, la experiencia está potenciada por mil durante los nueve meses de barriga. Es increíble el amor y cariño de una madre y de allí también su nexo especial con los hijos. Madre es madre y mi esposa es una súper madre! No pude haber elegido mejor compañera de vida que ella, amorosa, inteligente y cuidadosa al máximo, siendo además doctora, sabe perfectamente todo lo que debe hacer, pero fuera de su profesión, como mamá es lo suficientemente relajada como para que nadie entre en pánico, pero lo suficientemente dedicada y amorosa, lista para atender los azarosos caminos del embarazo. Felizmente Francesco ha sido un niño bueno y han sido 9 meses bastante tranquilos, aunque él en la barriga se movía todo el tiempo. Hoy he vuelto a descubrir el amor absoluto, entramos a sala, todo empezó, chistes van y vienen con su doctor, un capo de capos y buen amigo Juan Manuel Villalba Kravcio, minutos después, el corazón se acelera, los latidos se sienten en el pecho, los segundos pasan y se crea la verdadera magia, nace Francesco y es imposible no maravillarte con lo asombrosa de la naturaleza. Hoy empiezas una nueva vida, una vida que junto a tu mamá prometemos acompañar con mucho amor, educación y los mejores valores y consejos para ti. In 1965, my father John was given the number 18 when signed by Carlton and played 29 games for the navy blues in the 18. That started the Lloyd tradition and passion for the number 18 which passed down to my brother Simon who played in the 1990 Williamstown premiership in the 18. Who doesn’t love the simplicity of the gentle sway of a swing and taking in the sights of the neighborhood? Those are two favorite pastimes for a boy in Bernardsville named Neil. The growing ten-year old also uses a wheelchair and was finding it harder and harder to enjoy a regular swing, so Neil had a wish - to have an outdoor wheelchair swing - and that wish was just granted! Today Neil’s family, friends and the town of @bernardsville.nj joined together for a surprise parade as Neil enjoyed an afternoon ride in his new swing. The convoy was led by the Bernardsville Police Department who were also instrumental in orchestrating traffic patterns, staging areas, and organizing the crowd of participants. If there is one piece of advice I could offer my friends out there it would be to pick up your fucking phone and call your parents. Tomorrow isn’t promised. Being in our twenties we think we have all the time in the world. There would be times where my Dad and I would talk 2-3 times a week and then times once every few months. All of us are going to lose them.. and having lost my first.. a lesson I have learned is to just take the 5-10 minutes and call. You don’t want to live the rest of your life wishing you had. It’s been one week since Jade and I lost our sweet baby Blaise and there still are no words... Blaise was the baby we always prayed for in so many ways - my height, Jade’s eyes, an Ervin nose and the tiniest little ears 😉. There are so many things on this earth that I am sad I will never get to do with him, but it makes me happy to know that he is now completely healed and has met Jesus face to face. We want Blaise’s legacy to be not one of sorrow and pity, but instead of joy and gratitude. I was lucky enough to cherish a month with my son that will forever change me. He reminded me of the things in life that truly matter and taught me not to take a single moment with loved ones for granted. The amount of prayers and support we have received this past month has been overwhelming, felt and much appreciated. This little boy went back to school in person today, and loved every minute of it. He has missed school more than anyone in our house, and he looked visibly relieved to march off into a classroom with a teacher. We miss our schools and friends in NYC a lot (understatement!), but feel extremely lucky to have found a warm, nurturing and safe spot for this guy here in the suburbs, with just three other sweet kiddos and the kindest teacher. He never ceases to amaze me with his strength and courage even in the midst of being “just a little bit scared” He ALWAYS makes sure he says “Hi” to every doctor and nurse he meets. Pray for Gods miraculous care during this whole procedure... We know God has a plan for this little man. Many people say they have seen Angels. We held one in our arms. We will always love and miss you Blaise. I know with such great parents like Jade and Gef, you would have grown to be an amazing man, but now you will make an even better angel. Rest easy Nephew. Blaise Augustine Cherwak passed due to a congenital heart defect (CHD). It is not sympathy or flowers that would bring my sister and her husband joy during this time. There is a 501 C 3 operation known as the Brett Boyer Foundation that focuses on funding research for CHD (along with many other wonderful causes). A fund has been started within the Brett Boyer Foundation called “The Eternal Blaise Fund”. With this fund Jade and Gef get to determine the destination of the fund within the Brett Boyer Foundation. They get to personally be the ones to help families fight through the difficult battles that they just experienced. Inspired by his Baha’i Children’s Class on the virtue of Justice, John, a 9 year old from a Baha’i community in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺 decided it wasn’t Justice for some people not to have food while others did. BEING A DAD My greatest accomplishment to date, being part of the formula to bring this incredible human in to the world. Good parents will always try to do the very best by their kids. Part of that endeavour will often leave you questioning your own professional and life choices along the way. Do I work too many hours? Should I work more to secure my kids future? Am I too hard on them? Am I letting them get away with too much? I’m becoming more and more aware that there’s no right or wrong answer in how you do this parenting malarkey. All you can do is your very best to raise them Into kind, loving beings who add to society rather than detract from it. Looking forward to the next challenge just around the corner with little madam on the way. I’ve got no doubt I’ll make many more mistakes and question my own judgement time and time again. Happy Back to School - COVID-19 Edition! Not sure if you sent your kids to school this morning but I am certainly glad I was reasonably early to drop them off. Line ups, temperature check, hand sanitizer and we, parents, were not allowed to go in. It’s a good thing my Juju is super independent and gave me a big hug and a kiss and waved me goodbye. I used to stay a bit and play with her...and I used to go in with my son to meet his new teacher and see which friends he has in his class. It’s a bit bittersweet this morning because I miss doing these things. I was still “kind” of able to capture this first day with a 📸... but oh boy, it was almost like a full workout hahah I wish you ALL an amazing back-to-school start! ✨ SIBLINGS ✨ I will always wonder what NICU looks like through the eyes of a child. NICU is a place many adults struggle to understand and process. That first moment when you enter, having no idea about the world you’re about to get involved in. What does that feel like to a child? Stepping into the neonatal unit for the first time to see their new brother or sister? How siblings react will no doubt depend on their age, the circumstances, previous experiences and their exposure to the unit. My twins were 10 years old and Henry (pictured here) was 7 years old. Tough ages, I think. Old enough to understand and question a lot, but not quite old enough to be able to rationalise or fully comprehend. There was upset, there were tears, there were times they felt frightened. But there was also laughter, there was resilience. This photo says it all - the only thing Henry wanted to do from the moment Baby T was born, was hold him. He asked everyday he visited. Eventually after nearly 10 days he got his wish, and you can see just how happy he is. This photo gives me so much joy. I don’t often share photos of Baby T’s bruised eyes and face because it makes me too sad, but seeing Henry’s beaming face takes all that sadness away. To him, he’s just having a cuddle with his baby brother. In that moment, nothing else matters. Managing siblings through NICU is tough. There’s no right or wrong way, so much depends on the child. Managing siblings after a NICU experience can also be challenging - I know mine all have mixed emotions about (and different responses to) the experience.
