Yesterday, I joined the leaders of Stanford Medicine and hundreds of others on campus at the March for Racial Justice. Surrounded by friends and colleagues, our community stood in solidarity to affirm that Black Lives Matter. Together, we were reminded that we are not powerless. We can stop the systems of racial oppression that led to the murder of George Floyd and so many others before him. But we must act. Hey governors — like @nygovcuomo in New York, @gavinnewsom in California, @govlarryhogan in Maryland, and @govpritzker in Illinois — what action are you taking NOW to reduce the prison population in your state so that we can stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and save lives? Our lives have changed in enormous ways in recent weeks to decrease the spread of COVID-19 across the country, in large part through social distancing and increased hygiene practices. Neither of those necessary steps are possible, though, in the jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers across the US that hold more than 2 million people. These facilities often are overcrowded and they lack basic hygiene options and health care resources — circumstances that make COVID-19 outbreaks inevitable. Already, the jail on Rikers Island in New York appears to have the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases in the world. Making this problem even worse, the churn of staff and others in and out of these facilities daily means that a COVID-19 outbreak in jails and prisons will lead to illness among staff and spread of COVID-19 in the households and communities where those employees return at the end of every shift. Governors across the nation need to take decisive action NOW to reduce jail and prison populations through whatever powers they have at their disposal, including commuting sentences or granting reprieves to bring people home now. This gap in public health information has caused lots of uncertainty, but we’re pleased that after persistently raising this issue, the Government have confirmed that blind and partially sighted people in England can be guided by someone outside their household or social bubble. Here we’ve put together our guidance on how this can be done while minimising risks. The new driving license will have an advanced microchip with features like Quick Response (QR) code and Near Field Communication (NFC). The changes will help the government retain records and penalties of the DL holder up to 10 years on the centralised online database. The new DL will also help the government in maintaining records of differently abled drivers, changes done to the vehicles and the person’s declaration to donate organs. As for RCs, the government is set to make this process paperless from October 1. Nielsen lawsuit, combined with the Bhattarai lawsuit, the two lawsuits which resulted in an injunction protecting TPS families from six countries (El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan). Despite overwhelming evidence that Trump’s TPS terminations were motivated by racism, this action will move forward and it now clears the way for the Trump Administration to de-document and tear apart 400,000 families. In as little as six months, TPS holders would lose their lawful status, and their U.S. citizen children could be forced to make an impossible choice between their families and their homes. Horrific: Women Unsafe In India? Rape Happens Every 16 Minutes, Reveals Report. New Delhi, October 2: The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has released its 2019 ‘Crime in India’ report and it has thrown some shocking facts and figures about the vulnerability of the women in India. The report released on Tuesday indicated how the women in India are increasingly becoming unsafe. The latest case before us is the Hathras gang-rape and murder where a 19-year-old Dalit girl was brutally violated by four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh. The girl, who was allegedly raped on September 14, died at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Monday during treatment. The latest NCRB report further reveals how a woman is raped every 16 minutes in India, while a dowry death occurs every hour. The data further shows that a woman is subjected to cruelty at the hands of her in-laws or husband every four minutes, said a report in News18 online. The 2019 NCRB report further reveals that a woman becomes a victim of acid attack almost every two days. While a woman is gang-raped and murdered every 30 hours in India. A woman faces a rape attempt every two hours. The case of assault with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty is reported every six minutes. From the 15th of August to the 23rd hundreds and hundreds of science themed events are being held around Australia and now, more than ever, these events have become more accessible as they move into an online experience during the coronavirus pandemic. No longer are the big science events limited to those who live in the big cities where these events are hosted, or to those who have the privilege of being able to travel to these locations. Anyone from around the country can tune in! Science Week provides great opportunities to expand your horizons and learn something new about the world around you, whether it’s about health and medicine, agriculture, or my personal favourite, space and astronomy. Attending events throughout Science Week allows you to interact with scientists and ask questions about their field of research and learn from the source of new knowledge. There are also lots of opportunities to learn from Indigenous scientists around Australia. Our ancestors navigated across the land using the stars and the planets, they recognised the link between the phases of the moon and the tides. They predicted changes in the weather and identified the variable nature of distant stars in the night sky. And yet, some people still disregard the great knowledge of Indigenous people that is held within our culture and claim that it is “not real science”. And that is the attitude Indigenous scientists and communicators are trying to change in our society. One series of events organised by the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), Macquarie University, and Redfern Community Centre, showcases a wide range of Indigenous science topics. In the “Indigenous Science Experience” you will be exposed to bush medicines and pharmaceuticals, and global Indigenous Engineering as well as Indigenous Astronomy. This is just one great example of the type of event that amplifies the wonderous nature and complexity of science from Indigenous culture in Australia. It was 1975 the first time that I was introduced to this procedure as a young nurse. The sweet, beautiful girl was only a couple of years younger than me and I was horrified! As I was prepping her for surgery she recited to me the reasons that it was being done. She said that it would stop the growth of unwanted hair on her face and body, her skin would become lighter and she would be more appealing to a future husband. What? This poor girl did not have any idea what was being done to her. Now, I am even more shocked and, yes, angry that a procedure like this is still happening to girls! How? Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they dont care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with men effectively. An Extinction Rebellion protester proved a catwalk surprise at Paris Fashion Week when they gatecrashed the Christian Dior show and unfurled a sign that read We Are All Fashion Victims”. Reuters reports that a spokesman for the movement in France said the protest was designed to highlight “the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and society. Its not the first time the environment action group have targeted fashion shows to get their message across. At London Fashion Week last year activists attempted to form a human traffic blockade around venues. As the runway seasons long-anticipated return since Covid-19 halted the calendar in March got underway, it wasnt exactly business as usual in the French capital.
