Over the last two weeks, Congress has voted on a series of bills that will determine the federal funding for much of the next year. Representative Ocasio-Cortez put forward dozens of amendments to ensure that our spending reflects our values. Ultimately, several of the Congresswoman’s amendments were accepted by the House - including provisions that would effectively stop the federal government from buying tear gas, sending federal agents into U.S. cities without their consent, and enacting President Trump’s racist housing laws. While some of the Congresswoman’s amendments did not make it into the final package, they sparked important conversations among her colleagues that we expect will continue - most notably on the predatory nature of some of our military recruitment practices. This country prides itself on its all volunteer army, but in reality, we have a poverty draft. Our army is disproportionately made up of low-income Americans, due in part to aggressive military recruitment from low-income high schools - a practice that should be ended. Some public schools in our poorest communities have no guidance counselor, but they have an Army recruiter in their cafeteria every day. Entering into military service can be a great career choice, but it’s also a life or death decision that needs to be entered into soberly and with a full understanding of your options for professional advancement. Predatory military recruiting is also currently taking place on live streaming services. Using the website Twitch.tv, which averages more than 15 million daily users. Army, Navy, and Air Force esports teams broadcast gameplay to children as young as 13 and encourage them to consider enlisting. Military recruiting offices spend millions of dollars on marketing deals to promote their teams to these young people. While the Army, Navy and Air Force engage in this practice, notably, the Marine Corps refuses to participate, believing, correctly, that neither war nor sacrifice for one’s country is something to be trivialized or “gamified.” We need to end military recruitment via online streaming services such as Twitch. - @repaoc on Instagram

Caste by @isabelwilkerson has been one of the most significant books I’ve read in recent times. As an immigrant, it gave me a spectacular insight into the history of the US. Her brilliant writing shines across the pages and was so powerful that I had to often stop to catch my breath. But as a Dalit person, it also felt like being left out of my own history. Especially since caste is the original argument used in the book to observe the racial hierarchy in the United States. Ambedkar and his ideology is all over the book, but the ongoing trauma of Dalit narratives and the brutality of the caste system that hounds us not only in India, but also in the US, is missing. Hong Kong’s political landscape is currently incredibly fragile - especially in regards to the #extraditionlaw ⁣ ⁣ The extradition law (if passed), would allow the Communist Party to order Hong Kong authorities to arrest and extradite suspected criminals to mainland China. This is a fundamental issue because this is seen as a cover for the punishment of political deviants. Can stretching before training decrease muscle growth? - A 2017 study used a within-subject design to answer this question. The subject performed unilateral knee extensions for 4 sets to failure, twice per week for 10 weeks. For each subject, one leg performed those knee extensions without prior stretching, and one leg performed those knee extensions following some pretty intense static stretching before the first set: 2 sets of 25 seconds, at a discomfort level of 8 (on a 0-10 scale). - Strength gains were similar between conditions, but the legs in the non-stretching condition experienced larger increases in vastus lateralis cross-sectional area: 12.7 ± 7.2% v. 7.4 ± 3.7%. In fact, all but one of the subjects experienced more quad growth in their non-stretching leg. This difference in hypertrophy may have been driven by the effects of stretching on performance: subjects averaged almost seven more reps per session with their non-stretching leg. - The biggest takeaway ISN’T that stretching is bad. The biggest takeaway is that any stretching you do pre-training should not be intense enough or take place close enough to your working sets to negatively affect performance. If you do some light stretching, or if you stretch early in your warm-up (so performance has time to rebound before you start your work sets), you should be fine. - Study reviewed: Effect of the flexibility training performed immediately before resistance training on muscle hypertrophy, maximum strength and flexibility by Junior et al. - This study was previously reviewed in more depth in a 2017 issue of MASS. People will keep struggling and dying from addiction and substance use if we do not center the demise of capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, ableism, fatphobia and healing from the legacy of colonization. Under systemic oppression, so many of us find this world inhospitable. We have been separated from ourselves, from our land, from each other, from the divine. We have forgotten who we are. Our planet is being ravaged under the ongoing pressure of climate change. Capitalism keeps us grinding with minimal pleasure and vision of how we can actually live free in a way that doesn’t prop up so few people off of our energy, time, and resources. Capitalism keeps us from opening ourselves up to each other, to socially mobilize to better the collective. Our communities are left resource-scarce, stuck in cycles of trauma and violence, with a planet that is on fire, with sea levels threatening to swallow us whole and eviscerate everything. Addiction as we understand it involves so much coping to be in a world that enacts so much violence daily, and coping to be in bodies that have inherited unaddressed trauma throughout history. As long as this goes unaddressed, we will keep hearing tragic stories of people suffering in silence, of people dying, of whole communities being left to suffer and die. We can never be free until we are all free. Our recovery work must recognize and move towards this. It is important to respect Indigenous science practice Author: Kirsten Banks This week is National Science Week. From the 15th of August to the 23rd hundreds and hundreds of science themed events are being held around Australia and now, more than ever, these events have become more accessible as they move into an online experience during the coronavirus pandemic. No longer are the big science events limited to those who live in the big cities where these events are hosted, or to those who have the privilege of being able to travel to these locations. Anyone from around the country can tune in! Science Week provides great opportunities to expand your horizons and learn something new about the world around you, whether it’s about health and medicine, agriculture, or my personal favourite, space and astronomy. Attending events throughout Science Week allows you to interact with scientists and ask questions about their field of research and learn from the source of new knowledge. There are also lots of opportunities to learn from Indigenous scientists around Australia. Our ancestors navigated across the land using the stars and the planets, they recognised the link between the phases of the moon and the tides. They predicted changes in the weather and identified the variable nature of distant stars in the night sky. And yet, some people still disregard the great knowledge of Indigenous people that is held within our culture and claim that it is “not real science”. And that is the attitude Indigenous scientists and communicators are trying to change in our society. One series of events organised by the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), Macquarie University, and Redfern Community Centre, showcases a wide range of Indigenous science topics. In the “Indigenous Science Experience” you will be exposed to bush medicines and pharmaceuticals, and global Indigenous Engineering as well as Indigenous Astronomy. This is just one great example of the type of event that amplifies the wonderous nature and complexity of science from Indigenous culture in Australia. From @guardian A spate of brutal rapes and murders of young girls in a single district of India over the past month has provoked outrage and exposed the ongoing use of sexual violence as a tool of oppression and revenge against lower caste communities. On 14 and 24 August, two girls, a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old, were both raped and killed in Lakhimpur Kheri. “These cases of extreme sexual violence are more examples of the dominant caste wielding power over Dalit women who are perceived as weak and vulnerable and available,” said Manjula Pradeep, director of campaigns at the Dalit Human Rights Defenders Network. She added: “Dalit women are seen as impure and deprived when they access basic amenities but their bodies are also used as objects to take revenge on the Dalit communities and keep them oppressed.
