When I was in high school, my favourite type of alcohol was gin. Not because I enjoyed the flavour, but because I thought it made me seem mature and sophisticated. Most of my peers at the time were swigging from 40oz bottles of Olde English in brown paper bags, so in comparison, my 750ml Canada Dry bottle, filled half-and-half with ginger ale and diluted Beefeater I stole from my parents liquor cabinet does seem pretty posh. By the way, to this day, I still can’t catch a whiff of a brown paper bag without being instantly transported back to the forest behind my high school, choking back unrefrigerated malt liquor and passing around a cherry Prime Time spliff in the rain, while “Poppin’ Them Thangs” by G-Unit plays softly off someone’s iPod, but I digress. I can remember one night in particular when my friend and I were enjoying some gin around his kitchen island while his parents were out of town. At a certain point, we ran out of ginger ale, which is by far the classiest pairing for gin, any mixologist worth their salt will tell you that. We needed something else to chase our booze, and it was late enough that the stores were all closed, but not so late that we wanted to stop drinking anytime soon. After taking a quick itinerary of the fridge, we concluded that there were no acceptable beverages readily available for us to neutralize the intensity of our alcohol. While there wasn’t anything to drink, there sure was a lot of food, and we were getting a bit peckish. So rather than raw-dog our livers like we had so many times before, we decided to kill two birds with one stone and chase shots of Bombay Sapphire with slices of Maple Leaf black forest ham. The combination of those two substances entering your body simultaneously isn’t exactly the easiest sensation to describe. Just imagine yourself in a Chevron Stop N’ Shop at 3am, drunk out of your mind, and you’re eating an expired pepperoni stick, within nose-shot of the automotive air freshener rack.
