There are so many wonderful photographs in the Museum’s archives of the horse-drawn vehicles used in Kennebunk in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were essential to move people, goods and information to places railroads and waterways didnt go. Horse-drawn delivery wagons remained in use well into the automobile age. It wasnt unusual to see milk, ice, or produce delivered by horse--especially in smaller towns like Kennebunk. Horses were well suited to the frequent stops and starts along a route and could negotiate poor roads better than early motorized vehicles. Before mechanical refrigeration, many Americans bought their perishable goods on a daily basis so enterprising merchants delivered groceries door-to-door in wagons. Historian Ken Joy gives this account of Charles Shepard who drove a delivery wagon from the railroad station to the stores downtown. “After he loaded his wagon at the station he would climb up to the sea, shake the reins and promptly fall asleep. Without guidance the horse would go down Summer Street, down Main Street into Garden Street and stop at the rear of the Curtis & Roberts grocery store. Charles would wake up and make his deliveries.” In 1902, rural farmers became more connected with the rest of the nation when Congress made rural postal routes--operated in only a few areas beginning in 1896--a permanent part of the postal service. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a boon to residents who were previously required to personally collect their mail in the nearest town. Elbridge Smith (1867-1933) used this light-weight mail wagon on his route in West Kennebunk. Many other rural carriers use d similar wagons some set up with a cash box, foot warmer and a small sorting desk inside. Elbridge delivered mail in this cart, now part of the collection of the Brick Store Museum, from 1902-1932 when he retired at 65. - @brickstoremuseum on Instagram

Gotta love a pony cart...led by a goat! This photo was taken c 1880s near what is now the area near Calhoun and Lockwood Blvd. It was published in 1893 as part of the twelve-part publication entitled “Art Work of Charleston” published by W.H. Parish (Chicago, IL). Each part features photographs of buildings and grand homes (both “lost” and still remaining), streets, historic sites, gardens, cemeteries, industrial sites, and Lowcountry scenes along with a narrative that runs throughout each volume. REMEMBERING THE FALLEN - Memorial Day On this Memorial Day Weekend, we remember and honor all who sacrificed their lives while serving in the US Military. This photo is a powerful photo showing 3 war veterans looking on at the graves in Arlington National Cemetery. As you can see the 2 Korean War veterans on the right, lost their legs in Korea. I cannot fathom all that these 3 war veterans must have been thinking as they looked on at the graves of these fallen. But I can sense the thickness of the silence that must have hung in the air as these veterans thought about the buddies they lost. These 3 war veterans are - Mr. R. Zantz - World War 1 veteran, Sgt. 1st Class John Hechimovich- WW2 and Korean War veteran, and Cpl. Jack McDonald- Korean War veteran. One thing is very clear in this photo - SACRIFICE. Sacrifice made with the precious lives of these fallen who are buried and sacrifice made by the veterans who pay tribute to these fallen brothers. I have interviewed over a hundred Korean War veterans and they all say the real heroes are the ones who died in Korea. To me, they are all heroes. Over 36,000 Americans were killed and over 8,100 became Missing in Action (MIA). As a Korean American, I think about all who gave their lives to give me my cherished freedoms, not just on Memorial Day, but every day. I thank God every day, that I could be alive and free because of these American heroes, who came to Korea, a country they never heard of and saved my family and the people of South Korea. If not for them, all of South Korean would have been overtaken by North Korean communists and I would have been born to the scariest place on earth, totally devoid of freedoms and human rights. I will always be mindful of not only what these heroes gave me, but also what they saved me from. So, for me every day is memorial day, to remember the heroes who made such a tremendous sacrifice with their lives for my cherished freedoms. Deanna Bowen @narrowroomss new solo exhibition opening today, Black Drones in the Hive, asks the viewer to consider how a shared understanding of history is constructed over time through our cultural artifacts. Among the visual means of building a Canadian canon, few are as public or as hotly contested today as our statues and monuments. Debate and destruction of historical monuments is nothing new - among the stories illuminated in Bowens interdisciplinary exhibition is that of a bust honouring Kaiser Wilhelm I that once held pride of place in Victoria Park before being torn down and cast into the nearby lake in the weeks following the start of World War I. This event set off a cycle of protection and protest surrounding the fallen bust, whose final fate remains unknown today. See this story and many others illuminated through archival materials, new works and selections from our Permanent Collection in Deanna Bowens latest project - on view starting today! #kwagbowen #blackdronesinthehive #victoriapark #monuments #berlinontario #watreg - @kwartgallery on Instagram
