I’M NOT OKAY WITH THIS.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’m sorry guys, Im just going to say it: I can’t with the forced positivity. I loveeeee so many people and things. I feel like I just genuinely ooze love from my core and I truly want everyone in the world to just feel joy, peace and happiness in its most purest form.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But no, I’m not always a ray of sunshine. I’m not always positive. I’m not “good vibes only”. Why? I’m human. I’m aware. I’m painfully aware of every single delicate intricacy and nuance of life that escapes most people’s consciousness on a daily basis. I’m not saying this makes me special or above anyone. I’m just finally embracing and understanding that I’m not cRaZy or abnormal just because I admit that my emotions are dynamic. We aren’t meant to be static. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So although I won’t wallow in sadness, disappointment, frustration...I will acknowledge and sit with those feelings before tuning into what I can change or influence for a solution to whatever problem is happening. All of our lives completely and suddenly changed in the blink of an eye. Like, literally turned upside-down twilight zone level change. ⁣⁣ ⁣ Everyone is pivoting to make the best of things but who is going to be “okay” every single day?? Not me.⁣⁣ ⁣ I am just tired of feeling like I need to kill off that part of myself that feels all the things. I’m not saying it’s ok to let feelings control you but it’s also not ok to resist them completely. How can you reposition yourself to learn how to better navigate through things if you just push down everything uncomfortable and slap a “be happy/grateful” sticker on top and pretend that feeling that’s urging you to stretch/grow isn’t actually there and everything’s ok?⁣ ⁣⁣ That’s all. I finally did it 🎓 Not just take these photos but actually graduate. After years of successes, failures, several moves, a college transfer, a marriage, a child, and a pandemic, I have completed my masters degree! I’m officially a nurse practitioner and once board exams are done I’ll be certified to practice. Like all 2020 graduates, I didn’t get the ceremony I wanted and craved. I worked damn hard for this degree and had envisioned walking across a stage while my family cheered me on. Since graduation was virtual, I didn’t get that celebratory feeling— until yesterday when I put my graduation regalia on. I was feeling myself! Alhamdulillah. It’s hard to describe the feeling I felt when I walked across that stage and looked up at my parents — my mother hysterically crying and my father screaming, cheering and smiling from ear to ear. It made every challenging moment during the last few years worth it. My parents sacrificed their education and passions so my siblings and I could pursue ours. This degree is as much theirs as it is mine. . . . Law school and preparing for the bar exam were easily two of the most challenging periods of my life — both academically and mentally. I never worked so hard and still, there were points where I didn’t think I could get through either. Despite the self-doubt, tears, stress and exhaustion, it turns out there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I’ve come out 100x stronger. I feel liberated. I feel unstoppable. It still feels so surreal that in 3 months I will be starting my dream job in criminal defense. Blessed is an understatement. 💛 - @cocochrissie on Instagram

This is 30. A couple weeks ago I turned 30 and next year I’ll turn 30 for the second time. How? Because if everything else is cancelled this year then so should growing older 😂 For years I was looking forward and genuinely excited to turn 30. I had it set in my mind that I would be where I wanted to be in my career, have my sh*t figured out, and my top goals checked off my to-do list. Well, we were on track for a lot of that and then 2020 happened. It set me back financially, mentally, and physically. Like all of you, my world was turned upside down and my sense of security was shattered, but crazy enough I’m feeling grateful for this year. It has altered my perspective. I’ve left my 20s feeling most thankful for meeting and marrying the love of my life, learning from my biggest and most heart aching mistakes, learning from other cultures while traveling, and betting on myself. Have you ever thought about leaving the dietetics profession? 🤔⁣ ⁣ 🧏🏻‍♂️ I often hear other RDs saying that they’re thinking of changing professions mainly for one reason and it’s not because they aren’t passionate about nutrition anymore ⁣ ⁣ 👉🏻 I’d like to share why I “left” dietetics so hopefully it’ll help those who have been contemplating with the idea ⁣ ⁣ 🤓 Before I got into dietetics & nutrition I had already knew that it was going to be a career for me to start in, but not end at.⁣ ⁣ 💸 One major factor was because when I looked at the average salary of a typical dietitian it was way below what I would be satisfied with...⁣ ⁣ 💪🏼 Also, another big reason is that I had a love for human anatomy & exercise that grew when I was a personal trainer in undergrad ⁣ ⁣ 🧠 So in the process of getting my RD I had already paved a path in my head that it was going to be a stepping stone into another career. ⁣ ⁣ 😊 Long story short that is why I have my RD and Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I’m truly passionate about both professions ⁣ ⁣ 🤯 Looking back now, I would’ve never had to change careers if the whole intent was all about the pay ⁣ ⁣ 😬 Knowing what I know now there are many ways for you to earn more as a RD if you aren’t planning to be average & typical.⁣ ⁣ 💨 Back then I was making a decision based off BLS median annual salary (average & typical), but luckily for me I had a passion in a whole other profession too.⁣ ⁣ 🍎 So if you’ve been thinking about changing professions because of the pay, even though you love nutrition, just know that you may not have to...⁣ ⁣ ✅ You can make what you want if you master non-traditional skills. - @registereddietitianapproved on Instagram

２７ ＹＥＡＲＳ ＹＯＵＮＧ 🥳 : I grew up thinking that at 27 I 𝓼𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓵𝓭 be married with kids on the way. Truth be told, I had always loved surgery but could never commit to it. I kept telling myself I couldn’t have a family AND be an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon because I had placed this unjustified expectation of WHEN to start a family in my mind 🤦🏻‍♀️ : In the beginning of dental school I continued to convince myself I wouldn’t pursue OMFS... until 3rd year when I started working in the OMFS clinic. I LOVED OMFS and there was no doubt about it 🤩 But still, after speaking to many surgeons, I 𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐓 I had to choose between being a Mom or being an OMFS 😬 : It sounds silly, but it was a difficult time for me and I felt like I was going through an identity crisis 😰 : Fortunately, one of my OMFS mentors, Dr. Howard Israel, sat me down and said, “You make your own reality. If you want to be an OMFS and a Mom, you will make it happen. You’re in charge of what your life looks like, not anyone or their opinions.” It seems like such simple advice but it was these words that changed the course of my life 🌈 : I realized later that until that point, I had only spoken to male surgeons — OMFS is only 𝟣𝟨% 𝒻𝑒𝓂𝒶𝓁𝑒 and I had not yet met a female OMFS with a family 🤔 : Well, fortunately again, I met one of my female OMFS role models towards the end of my third year of dental school. I will not tag her as I want to respect her privacy, but she was a rising OMFS chief at that time AND had just started a family 😱 I couldn’t believe it!! She gave me hope and I still look up to her today 🌈 : I also discovered @women_in_omfs and was fortunate enough to connect with a lot of other incredible women OMFSs who I idolize 🌟 : So here’s to turning 27... 2nd day into my OMFS residency, scrubbed into an orthognathic case yesterday, taking first call at a level 1 trauma center with an amazing Chief (@drianlehrer 🔥), sutured my first laceration, and 𝒻𝑒𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓈𝑜 𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓉𝑒𝒻𝓊𝓁 for everyone who has encouraged me through my journey, for all my mentors who inspired me by example, and of course for my new OMFS family at NUMC 💖 - @dr.jessli on Instagram

She never compromised patient care for outside activities but always utilized her time off to enjoy living in NYC from a concert in the park to an amazing new restaurant in the west village. I always look back at our amazing dinner parties with fellow residency friends and how hard to laughed, it made all those long calls and pressure at work dissipate really fast. She always showed me that Alex, you are more than a doctor, you are a person with so many interests and passions and you shouldn’t put those completely on a shelf for residency. She showed me how to “have it all” while not letting anything slip. She made what could’ve been the toughest time, some of the best times and I’m eternally grateful. WHO EVER SAID YOU CAN DO IT ALL LIED My plan for my #maternityleave was to do it all: ➕Master motherhood ➕Work on getting my body “back” ➕Learn new skills ➕Read all the books I’ve hoarded ➕Finish all the projects I’ve been putting off When I think about it- all I can do is laugh 😆 I’m glad I’m learning to give myself grace. In the world today there is an unattainable goal for mothers and women in general. We are supposed to be all things to everyone and make it look easy. It only took me a couple of days after I had my baby to let my perfect plan for my maternity leave go. Once I let go of my plans I was able to start enjoying this wonderful learning experience. For the last two months it’s been great to be able to focus on building my bond and learning with my baby girl. Now that my baby girl is so grown - (she thinks she’s 1 or something) she gives me more time to work on other things. First thing up- getting back to working out. Never Give Up Some have called me crazy, laughed at my unconventional journey or thought I should’ve given up and maybe I should have... As an Immigrant, as a Black man, who make up less than 3% of physicians, I should’ve given up the dream of medical school…I probably should’ve given up the dream coming from a family where a middle school education was the highest level achieved.. I should’ve given up a long time ago after graduating college with a subpar GPA, & being told by advisors, faculty and other physicians to pursue another career.. I probably should’ve given up after working tirelessly in a 2 yr Masters program, finishing w/ a 4.0 GPA, improving on the MCAT & still got rejected from medical schools. I probably should’ve given up when my mom, with her eyes soaked with tears, asked me to consider another career since my rejections were taking an emotional toll on the both of us..I should’ve given up when I did a second postgraduate program after my M.S. degree just to reapply to medical school…I should’ve given up even after I was finally accepted to @iumedschool on an academic scholarship but still didn’t feel smart enough for medical school.. I probably should’ve given up after sacrificing the last 10+ years of my life filled with rejections, insecurities, unforeseen tragedies, and uncertainties about the future. But I’m glad I didn’t. - First, I thank God for His strength.. I did not give up bc He revealed to me my calling, my potential and my resiliency. -I thank my mom for her incessant prayers.. I did not give up, this degree is just as much hers as mine. -I thank my fam & friends for their support.. ✨Celebrate Every Year 27✨ That’s what the sign next to me says , but clearly my lighting couldn’t let me be great lol. I used to say stuff like the years in-between 25-30 are those “insignificant/filler years”. Or 25 and 30 are the years you “really” celebrate not the ones in the middle. The last couple of years (2020 especially) have shown me the importance of celebrating every year. With all of the precious black lives taken from us too soon and the precious lives lost to COVID I know I’m blessed to be alive. Every day that the Lord grants us is a day we should cherish. Not only that, but the Lord is doing some great things in my life things I typically take for granted (like sanctification) and I want to embrace this season of growth. I’m thankful I’ve been able to see another year and so thankful for the family/community the Lord has put around me! Hi it’s me, wishing I was teaching virtually from my comfy chair or maybe even the beach, but instead we’re finding the positives every day like how ANY day can be bring your dog to school day and how my students are realizing Mrs. Williams is NOT afraid to call out for their mom and dad in the background to let them we know we may need some help staying on task and doing our work later. Your internet can’t decide which apps work for you, friends. 😳🤣 We also let parents join in on our dance breaks because grown ups need brain breaks too. While everyone else goes back to in person learning, I’ll just be sitting outside in my rain boots at our school farm letting my students talk to the chickens through the computer screen. 🤣 My students are already reminding me to water my plants and trying to convince Mr. Williams to get us a puppy as a class pet. ＨＥＬＬＯ 🤓 I’m officially a student again in 2020!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The funny thing is: after my 1st dental school graduation in 2013, I told myself I would NEVER be caught dead as a student again. I hated the rigidity of a traditional education system and longed for freedom from the shackles of academia. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Who knew that 7 years later, I would find myself as a full-time student/resident (again), specializing in Periodontology — and at Harvard no less. 😳 The first person to do so from my home country, The Philippines. ⁣⁣🇵🇭 #Pinoypride #represent🇵🇭 ⁣⁣ Quite frankly, I’m still in disbelief sometimes.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If anyone told me back then that this is where my life was headed, I would have laughed in their face. 😂⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How the hell did I, who used to cut classes for fun and never took school exams seriously, get to this point?⁣⁣? ⁣⁣ Only by the grace of God. 🙏🏻⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My family and friends know I’m not religious, but I certainly believe in a higher power whose guidance has gotten me this far — despite my shortcomings and inspite of myself.⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣ Academically speaking, I *was* the antithesis of a Harvard (or UPenn) student. I only started turning my life around in 2013 when I had to study for the rigorous National Dental Board Exam in the Philippines (which historically has a passing rate of 30-50%). I freaked out, studied hard for the first time in my life (LOL), and surprisingly did very well. So when I got awarded for ranking 6th place out of nearly 1,000 candidates, even I startled myself. ⁣It was unbelievable, but that was all I needed to trigger the fire inside me. ⁣ That’s when I started to believe in the power of faith, grit, and hard work. ⁣🙏🏻💪🏻⁣ ⁣⁣ Know this: Fate can bring you places, but faith is what will carry you through. If you’re stuck in a hard place or struggling with self-doubt, please don’t give up on your dreams just yet. Take some time off to recollect, but never give up on yourself completely. What advice would I give to my newly graduated self a year ago?👩🏽‍🎓 . I would tell her: THE BEST IS YET TO COME BABYGIRL AND YOU WILL BE OK! . I remember being so scared of what the future might bring. . 🤯 Will I find a full time job? 🤯 Will I be making enough money? 🤯 Will I feel fulfilled? 🤯 Will I enjoy being back home? 🤯 Will long distance push me and Jaren apart? . And yes it was scary and I felt lost, confused and not gonna lie....I questioned my self identity and purpose. . But slowly...I found my way🥰 . 👏🏾 I found a great full time job that pays me well. 👏🏾 I’ve created some side hustles that keep me fulfilled. 👏🏾 I’ve actually enjoyed being back home...who knew? 😂 👏🏾 And this long distance has actually made me and Jaren STRONGER🤍 . In order to move forward you have to accept that yes it happened to you. Now move forward! ⠀ ✅Positive VIBES only. When negative things happen, it’s easy to sit in the funk. Remove anyone or anything that doesn’t add value or substance. Your environment is key! ⠀ ✅Talk to others. Trust me, you are NOT alone in your trial. You would be surprised at how other people have gone through similar things. There is healing in expressing your emotions. Do not keep things bottled inside. Here we go...I’ve kept this a secret for a really long time..but I wrote a book! And it’s now available in its virtual version! Phew. That was tough for me to get out. I grew up in a family where we never really discussed our accomplishments so it often feels unnatural. Today’s #blackfemaledrs_ukfeature is the adventurous Dr Fofie @hazelfofie @thedrtravels Dr Fofie is a paediatric registrar based in London. She trained at @stgeorgesunioflondon and completed an intercalated BSc in Global Health at @lifeatkings. She is passionate about global health (particularly child and maternal health). She recently completed @lshtm’s diploma in tropical medicine (East Africa) which gave her great insight into the practical realities of healthcare delivery in an African setting, as well as an understanding of tropical diseases. She enjoys travelling and as such founded travel hub and feature account @chaleyenko, which aims to inspire, showcase and promote travel in and around Ghana as well as travel worldwide. She can’t wait for her next adventure but until then is using this time to explore her affinity for writing, social commentary and meaningful dialogue (watch this space!) Your journey. Your story. Your choice. . I think we’ve all been there, we feel the pressures of what’s happening around us. Everyone moving forward. Everyone trying again. . Lately, I’ve had a ton of thoughts that I’ve been trying to block out but if I’m being honest, they are there, no matter what I do. I can’t help but feel like I’m stuck. Later this year, we hope to transfer our remaining 2 embryos and on many occasions I have said, this might be our last shot. Why? . Couldn’t I just do another retrieval? Couldn’t I go through embryo adoption? Couldn’t I look into other means of becoming a mom? . Sure. And a lot of people do. But that doesn’t mean that’s what WE will do. And you know what, I think it’s important to remind myself that it’s okay if we don’t. . She’s been through 8 transfers. She’s done 5 retrievals. She kept trying after 10 years. . But that doesn’t mean I have to do the same. This isn’t a comparison game. This isn’t a competition. . You know what it also doesn’t mean? It doesn’t mean that I didn’t want it bad enough. It doesn’t mean that I’m weak. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t care enough. And it absolutely doesn’t mean that my dream of becoming a mother meant less to me than her. . Everyone has a different pain tolerance. I’m not just talking about physical pain tolerance. I’m talking emotional and mental. And if you’ve reached that, it’s okay to rest. It’s okay to stop. You don’t have to keep going just because you believe you HAVE to. . Maybe you’ll change your mind in the future. Maybe you won’t. Maybe next month could be a different story. Maybe it won’t. How to present a SOAP note! One of the biggest skills you will hone as a 3rd year med student is how to effectively present a patient on rounds! Mastering this can definitely impress your attending! There’s a steep learning curve to presenting but once you get it down, it becomes second nature! SOAP: Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan. This is how you should present ADMITTED patients, which is different than the initial H&P! 🔹Start with your one liner: “Mrs. M is a 55 yo F with a past medical history of HTN, COPD, who presented with SOB and is admitted for acute on chronic COPD exacerbation secondary to URI, on hospital day 3.” 🔹Subjective: Report how the patient is doing (w/in the last 24 hours). “Pt reports a mild headache, which was controlled with Tylenol. She reports that her SOB is improving. She denies any chest pain.” 🔹Objective: Vitals (in 24hr ranges) Temp: afebrile, 97.5-98.7 (If had a fever, say “Tmax= X” to indicate the highest temp.”) BP: 124-140/89-99 Pulse: 78-88 Resp rate: 11-12 O2 sat: 96-97% (on room air or if getting O2 by nasal cannula, specify amount) Ins/outs: In: 500 mL PO, Out: 1000 mL urine, Net: - 500 mL (important for pts on strict Is and Os!) 🔹Physical exam Go through the exam by system (General, Cardio, Pulm...). Highlight KEY findings. 🔹Labs/imaging/microbio Note any NEW (w/in last 24h) results. Pay attention to those pertinent to your patient. 🔹Assessment: Include your one liner with the patient’s current status, list any pertinent new complaints/labs/imaging/exam findings and ddx (if new findings). “Mrs. M is a 55 yo F with a PMHx of HTN & COPD who p/w SOB in the setting of a URI. Her symptoms are likely 2/2 to an acute exacerbation of chronic COPD. She is currently stable on 2L via NC and her SOB is improving.” 🔹Plan: Present by problem or by system (more common in the ICU). When you list by problem, start with the highest acuity. By problem: 1. Acute on chronic COPD exacerbation -continue albuterol/ipratropium tid -wean O2 as tolerated -etc. 🔹End with disposition: d/c home pending improvements in O2 require. Giving in to the journey⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I often tell patients the fertility journey is unpredictable. Some patients have a short course, some long. And there’s no way to know where we may fall. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s important to try and not have expectations and try not to plan a set timeline when it comes to fertility treatment. Setting expectations like this often lead to stress and disappointment, which is definitely not something I want patients to experience during their fertility treatment. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Instead, I ask patients to try and let go and give into the journey. Don’t set expectations. Instead, let me as the physician take control. Know that I will get you to pregnancy as quickly and effectively as I can. Life Update #3⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We did a thing. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We bought our forever home. ♥️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It was not a house I expected to fall in love with. I wanted a turn-key house (to be honest - a McMansion🤣🤣). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But this is 2020 and I’ve learn to expect the unexpected and this historic house built in the 1930s on over 9 acres on a hill with a barn feels like HOME. 𝐷𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑃𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑑 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠, Here are some tips to help in your journey to medical school. 1. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒂 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒅. You can major in any field that you are interested in, and still be premed. It will make you stand out in the medschool application process if you have a different degree. Additionally, it allows you to pursue other passions while in college. 2. 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒍𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚. I highly recommend mapping out your course schedule for the 3-5 years you plan to spend in college. Create a template based in your college academic calendar. Do they follow a quarter system or semester system? Map out the courses you will be required to take. Premed courses generally consist of Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and English. Check with your school about what their specific premed requirements are. Also, consider completing your premed courses early in order to give you time to do other things, like study abroad or focus on your degree. It may also give you more time to focus on the 𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐓. 3. 𝑩𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚 𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒔. Make sure you plan to take some easy classes with your hard classes. This will give you more of a balanced schedule, and will allow you to succeed in all of your classes. Don’t forget that 𝐆𝐏𝐀 𝗺𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. 4. 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚. Consider volunteering or shadowing at medical clinics in different specialities to learn more about them. Of course this may be virtually for now. It’s still quite early to decide what medical field you want to pursue, but learning early may also help you decide your major. For example, if you find psychiatry interesting, you may choose to major in psychology or neuroscience. Or you may like someone’s private practice set up and so you may choose to major in business or finance so you have the skills needed to start your own practice in the future. Happy Saturday! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Welcome to 1 out of our 2 WFH offices. We know working from home can be difficult, so here’s our top 5 tips. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (5) Pick a simple morning routine— three things you can do every morning before 9am. When you start to the throw in complex breakfasts and getting laundry folded, you’ll burn out. Our simple routine is: (i) always make the bed, (ii) 30 minutes of walking or running, (iii) drinking tea or coffee at our desk. ☕️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (4) If you can, pick a location you can “step into” and “step away from”. Productivity is not working 7 hours in a row. You really need a place you can put in a few hours, step back, take a break and come back to work after a snack or a breather. There’s a reason state law requires 2x 10 minute breaks per 7 hour shifts. 🖥 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (3) It may be tempting to just “quickly check your email” while laying in bed. Try to avoid this. As soon as you open that inbox, suddenly the laptop follows you into bed. If you have the space, keep work out of the bedroom. If you can’t because you’re in a small apartment, designate a corner or get a lap desk. This tells your brain when it’s time to work and when it’s time to sleep! Your brain has muscle memory! 🧠 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (2) Give yourself grace. Your work life and home life and maybe even your kids school life is all blending together. It’s very difficult to keep them separate. Instead of an hour by hour schedule, try blocks of time. And remember— this will not work every single day, it just won’t. So give yourself GRACE. ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (1) Put something on your desk that makes you smile. I have a photo of my favorite hike we have ever done and my favorite flowers. Sometimes when the day is stressful, I’ll move over my favorite candle from my friend Amber. First week in the books! 11 more to go!! I won’t do this every week, I promise, lol! . Reflection: I’m enjoying acute rehab more than I expected, with a few evaluations and treatments in acute care. I was intimidated by this setting, but it’s wonderful witnessing progress and empowering patients to get stronger in a short amount of time. . This past week I observed a lot, assisted as needed, did an evaluation, (one in Gujarati!), worked on documentation, and led 1-2 treatment sessions, which is scary, but with practice I know I will improve. . Yes there’s a lot of ADLs (activities of daily living—think about your morning routine!), but there’s also room for creativity, which is what I love! . Anyways, my plan was to sleep in, but I was up by 6am, took a long walk outside, now sipping coffee, and planning my day! Happy weekend! The Secret to Doing Well on Board Exams: Question Interpretation! Medical students use the same resources to study for board exams. By the end of dedicated, most students will have the same knowledge base. So, what differentiates those who score a 230 vs a 250 on step 1? I truly believe that it’s not knowledge. Instead, it’s the critical thinking skills. The clinical reasoning. The data interpretation. The ability to apply knowledge to NEW scenarios. This includes ✨question interpretation✨ which means applying what you already know to understand each sentence, in context, of the given scenario. This is not taught or talked about in school, but I think it’s crucial for doing well on boards! How most students (including myself) approach a question: -skim the vignette -look for buzzwords -start by reading the last line (usually the question) While this can help you get an answer right some of the time, my few tips on Q interpretation👇🏽 will help you get more questions right (and for the right reasons!)! 1. Know that EVERY sentence has a purpose. Even in vignettes that are 10-12 sentences long, understanding the role of EACH sentence will help you get the right answer. Ask yourself, “why did the test writer include this?” 2. Rephrase each sentence in your own words and within the context of the scenario. 3. Most importantly, rephrase the question in your own words. Board exams typically have a complex way of asking very simply questions! My name is Kourtney Murray. Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago to a sweet white woman from Missouri and a hardworking Indian man, race has always confused me. As a bi-racial woman growing up in a predominately white suburb, I’ve spent most of my life clinging onto my whiteness terrified that if I didn’t play along with society’s rules that I’d never be able to get as far as my white colleagues; I’d never be able to tell my story or help others further along. Throughout my life, I’ve kept my conversations about racial inequalities behind closed doors and have even added to it in many cases by doing so. What’s funny is how for the first twenty or so years of my life — no matter how hard I tried to be white, my skin was still brown. And while many of my friends, colleagues and even family members (still) like to remind me that they’re darker in complexion than I am or how I’m “only half brown,” life has shown me that I’ve really come into my own as an Indian woman and a woman of color — that’s who I’m proud to be. This account is an extension of myself, and if I’m going to cut the bullshit out in my life, we’re going to cut it here too. I’m not ok with filtering my thoughts, feelings & actions anymore to make people comfortable, and I’m certainly not ok with standing on the shoulders of my Black friends & colleagues. While I’ll continue to share my life in Chicago and real estate, I’m also going to keep putting in the work. It’s time to raise up our BIPOC community. Hi guys, recently I realized I never properly introduced myself to my followers. The number might be small but you guys mean a whole lot to me💕 . I’m Maddy! Last year I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor’s in nutrition & dietetics. Currently, I am enrolled in the coordinated program at UConn (dietetic internship & masters in health promotion). . If you don’t have an email list or you neglect it, it’s time to start giving your email list that TLC they deserve! ⁣ ⁣ I use convertkit but for beginners I recommend mailerlite.com which is free for your first 1000 email subbies!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 2️⃣ 𝐈 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 ⁣ I hired for copywriting, sales page design, and even got a VA to free up my time so I could focus on my expertise. ⁣ ⁣ Paying others to do work can be scary especially if you don’t know if it will pay off or they will even do a good job but I’m not an expert in everything and it was important for me to hire those who could help free up time and increase my revenue. ⁣ ⁣ 3️⃣ 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲⁣ Do things with intention and a strategy. ⁣ I had a clear & viable strategy behind my program launch which included weekly videos, and email marketing. ⁣ To stay on track, I used Trello.⁣com ⁣ ⁣ 4️⃣ 𝐈 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞d 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 ⁣ When I was preparing for my launch, there were days I wondered if anyone would join and if it would be yet another a $0 launch. ⁣ ⁣ To quiet that kind of negative thinking while working on my launch, I listened and read books that focused on mindset shift. For me, when COVID started, I had just made it to my 1 year anniversary as a nurse. I was still completing my nurse residency program, trying to wrap up my EBP for the program when the virus began spreading so quickly it felt like it had became a worldwide pandemic overnight. I felt like a new grad all over again. Working in a COVID ICU forced me—forced us all—to learn new skills, learn about new drugs I’d hardly seen in my home unit, and to learn to work like a team that’s been together for years, but with complete strangers you had only just met that morning. There was also added stress as I lived in fear that I would carry the virus home to my loved ones. That I would be the cause if they became infected. 5 years later... It took me 1 year to realize Engineering was not for me. Although, the transition to Nursing was very scary for a kid with no prior medical knowledge, a first generation college student, and a non-native speaker of English. The school challenged me to my fullest and studying became a habit through long hours each week. And I was desperate for help, therefore I am forever thankful to those who has helped me achieve this accomplishment. Knowledge doesn’t stop here and it certainly doesn’t have to be achieved through school, but I want to encourage those who is lost to keep pushing, keep working hard, and to discipline yourself. I was lost once, but it’s the lack of discipline and the fear of reaching out for help that held me back. Today I wanted to share some things I wish I had known before becoming premed - as the first doctor (hopefully!) in my family, this whole process was really new to me. Here’s what I wish I had known: • ✨Start everything EARLY - from getting shadowing experience to filling out your medical school application, the early bird truly does get the worm when it comes to premeds. Try to get ahead whenever possible, it will help you stand out from the crowd ✨You will need to learn how to say “no” - being a premed is hard, and you will often need to prioritize studying over socializing. I eventually learned to surround myself with people who were supportive of that ✨Get organized - as a premed, you will have a lot on your plate. The sooner you find a way to stay organized, the better. I personally love having a planner on my iPad ✨Do your activities for as long as possible - medical schools want to see commitment. That’s why it is so important to start early, even if you can only do 1-2 hours a week ✨Finally, I wish I had found this amazing community on Instagram earlier - people on Instagram have given me the most incredible advice, encouragement, and FREE STUFF that I won in giveaways haha! One. I received one medical school interview and one medical school acceptance. I took that one opportunity and put EVERYTHING I had into it. During my second year of medical school is when I connected with my now husband. I remember anytime I had an exam, I would disappear for days at a time. I think this used to make him nervous and question if I was truly interested. During a visit to Florida to see him I remember having a conversation with his mother. I told her how I tried to get into medical school for a few years and that I finally had an opportunity. I told her that I was relentlessly throwing myself into it. She heard me...and from that point on kept her son in check, and reminded him of my relentless pursuit. I put everything I had into medical school...literally. My priorities were Jesus, studying, exercise, sleep, and good food... all things that supported the goal. I never missed a Sunday service while in medical school, because I believed after studying as much as I humanly could, I would need the supernatural to see me through. Everyday after all day classes, I would sit at a desk in the study hall for hours, until I was at the threshold of not being able to drive home safely. I missed weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and all kind of celebrations. But I did all these things with a grateful heart, because I understood that I had been blessed with ONE opportunity, and it was up to me what I did with it. I say this to say... all it takes is one. This is so bittersweet. I am in shock and cannot believe that these 4 years have already come and gone. I will be honest with you, clinic has been a bit of a frustration lately. Shorter sessions. Virtual visits instead of in-person. Patients walking out. Scheduling issues. Miscommunication. Patients not showing up for appointments. Protocols. Constant changes. We are half way into the quarter and I’ve only seen 3 live patients... As a third year dental student, clinical experience is crucial. But I have to keep things in perspective. Just a few months ago the world was on lockdown so the fact that our school has re-opened and is doing their best to continue our education... that’s huge! And despite the current challenges and disappointments, there’s so much to be grateful for. Understanding faculty that are willing to work with you and help you make the most of your experiences. Class officers that are constantly communicating with the administrators to make improvements. Patents that do show up and are grateful for your service. More free time to work on projects outside of school. Time to travel and spend time with loved ones. I know the circumstances may not be ideal sometimes, and maybe this is not how we imagined our dental school experience to be. Ever heard the phrase “Studying for medical school is like drinking from a fire hose” ⁣ Yeah, I heard it too before starting.⁣ ⁣ A few days ago I asked you guys to tell me some rumors you’ve heard about medical school. The most popular response by far was that all you do is study in medical school. ⁣ ⁣ Well today, I’m going to tell you the truth! ⁣ ⁣ The first two years of medical school, your main job really is to study. Typically we would have tests every 2-3 weeks covering anywhere from 80-100 lectures. ⁣ ⁣ The best way I could describe it is that it’s like taking a midterm or final every 2 weeks with the amount of material you need to get through. ⁣ ⁣ Because of the sheer amount of material, you need to dedicate a lot of hours to get through it all usually 2-4 times. In order to pace myself, I would usually study 6-8 hours a day and then more like 8-10 hours closer to the test.⁣ ⁣ Yes it’s a lot! The way I would survive was by treating medical school like a job and spent the “work hours” of the day studying. Then by 6-7 pm, I would stop for the day, workout, talk to my boyfriend/friends, and relax. On the weekends, I would study most of the day as well but would try to go to a coffee shop with friends to make it less painful and try to take at least half a day off each weekend as well.⁣ ⁣ Now that I’m in my third year and in the hospital most days, I usually spend 2-3 hours studying each day either during downtime during the day or after work if it’s a busy day. Most of my learning is happening while in the hospitals and then I use flashcards and questions to cement it! ⁣ ⁣ The truth is that you do spend a lot of time studying in medical school. But, if you made it to medical school that means you got through Chemistry, Physics, OChem, Biology, and the MCAT. You know what it’s like to dedicate most of your time to studying and you can handle it! I promise! ⁣ ⁣ And while I study a lot, I also have time to travel, rock climb, cook, hang with my boyfriend, watch Netflix, and do normal human things!!! In the historic days of the Indian civilisation, a formal system of education did not exist. What prevailed were Gurukul, which later led to the emergence of two major systems of education --- Vedic and Buddhist. The Vedic system focused on the knowledge of the Vedas, Vedanga and Upanishads whereas the Buddhist system preached the ideologies of major Buddhist schools. These forms of education primarily focused on experience-based knowledge rather than sticking to the textual form of it. Even in ancient India, Debates and Discussions were a crucial part of learning and education. It taught the students the important values and morals to life. Education for women also played an important role back in the day. These educated women were divided into two major groups --- Sadyodwahas, women who pursued their education until they got married and Brahmavadinis, those who never got married and dedicated their life to education. But soon after, with the onset of colonial British rule, the ancient Indian education system was abandoned. India soon began to follow the British system of education which failed to evolve over the year under the evolution of society.
