Silvers are slowly returning around the Juneau area, and Dollies can still be found munching on egg patterns. . A new study funded by the FRDC is investigating the flow-on effects of changing reef habitats and environmental conditions on wild stocks of common coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus) on the Great Barrier Reef. Coral trout are critical in sustaining the Queensland coral reef fin fish fishery (CRFFF), and are also important target species for recreational, Indigenous, and charter fishery sectors. The project, led by researchers at the James Cook University (JCU), will be addressing a critical need to assess how the distribution, behaviour and population viability of coral trout are likely to change in response to recent and ongoing climate change. Recent research has indicated that coral trout in the northern Great Barrier Reef are already exposed to maximum summertime temperatures that exceed their apparent thermal optima (27-30°C). Building on research on how fish species respond to changing conditions to minimize adverse effects of increasing water temperatures, the project will establish the capacity for thermoregulatory behaviour among common coral trout. More specifically, the project will test for changes in the distribution and behaviour of common coral trout in response to seasonal and latitudinal variation in ocean temperatures, to understand the species capacity to moderate its exposure to extreme temperatures. Ainda estamos com inúmeros focos de incêndios na região da #Mantiqueira. Somente na região de Campos do Jordão, São Bento do Sapucaí, Santo Antônio do Pinhal, Sapucaí Mirim, São José dos Campos e Monteiro Lobato são quase 300 focos registrados pelo INPE. Mas quais são as consequências disso? Além da perda das florestas, da poluição do ar, dos recursos hídricos, entre diversos outros, os incêndios estão MATANDO nossos animais! ⠀ Para você entender melhor quais são os impactos na fauna local, trouxemos a pesquisa da Geise (2004), que identificou 69 espécies de mamíferos para o maciço do Itatiaia, das quais 33 (47,8%) estão incluídas na lista oficial de espécies ameaçadas de extinção, ou presumivelmente ameaçadas no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Destas, 56 ocorreram na Floresta Montana. ⠀ Dentre essas espécies está o macaco Muriqui, ou mono-carvoeiro, o maior primata brasileiro e um dos mais notáveis do ponto de vista da conservação. O muriqui está criticamente ameaçado de extinção segundo IUCN Red Data Book (2008) e a lista oficial do IBAMA. Os muriquis estão ameaçados principalmente pela caça e perda de habitat, com poucas populações conhecidas. Seu habitat preferencial está fortemente relacionado às florestas da #SerradaMantiqueira. É por isso que um incêndio florestal dessa proporção é tão preocupante para essas espécies, que já estavam em extinção e agora estão sofrendo diariamente as consequências das nossas atitudes. Elas podem desaparecer! Precisamos cuidar melhor dessa biodiversidade.
