Unfortunately, these policies and technologies have far outpaced public opinion. ⠀ ⠀ There are myriad reasons for this stasis. Many people do not physically see or experience climate change. Powerful interests in industry, politics and finance want to maintain the status quo and cast doubt on the well-quantified knowledge of science. Media treatment of climate change can be muddled, or not as compelling as it needs to be to get people’s attention. Built into our human minds and social systems is a fundamental resistance to new information, ideas and behaviors. It all adds up to a terribly slow social reaction to the clear and present danger of climate change.⠀ ⠀ But I believe that photographic expression and evidence can break down barriers of mental resistance. A fresh edit of an image I originally created back in 2016. Who doesn’t love a pile of polar bears!? This brings new meaning to a PB sandwich wouldn’t you say.. We came across this polar bear family on an ice pan located in Wellington Channel, up in the high arctic. (Scroll time the next images to see where on the map) There was a seal carcass just out of frame here. You can still see some of the evidence of lunch on the snout of mum & the head of the cub laying in back. No doubt a very memorable encounter which I won’t soon forget. - @davesandford on Instagram

Polar bears (Ursus Maritimus) are one of the largest land carnivores on the planet. Though their cubs can weigh less than a pound, adult males can grow up to 10 feet tall. The greatest threat to Polar Bears is the reduction of sea-ice on which they are dependent on for hunting and shelter. ANTHROPOMORPHISM- “the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviors to animals or non-human things.” You may have seen this footage a few years ago. A polar bear appeared to be “patting” a dog, and the whole world said “awww 🥰”. That’s because we anthropomorphised the situation. We love patting dogs and having that emotional connection with them, so by seeing the same apparent physical behaviour in another animal, our brains create an emotional reasoning that allows us to feel closer to the polar bear. Unfortunately, this emotional reasoning often leads to general shock when the situation changes, and can even create dangerous situations. Although we may like to think this polar bear loves to play with dogs as we do, we must step back and understand it’s true intentions as a polar bear, not a human. This polar bear was later documented eating another dog... So is anthropomorphism always a bad thing? What if, by believing an animal is displaying the same emotions as a human (we are also animals by the way), it creates conservation awareness and action for that species? Protects its home? Many wildlife imagemakers try to get as close to an animal as they can. Personally, I like to get as close as the animal feels comfortable with; not disrupting it. Sometimes, however, close can become too close, especially with polar bears. This young cub was very curious and kept on walking straight towards me. Not only are these cubs much stronger than their cuteness would suggest. Mummy dear was only a second away which could put my team and I in danger. Fortunately, little bear decided I wasn’t interesting enough and went back to relaxed mummy. TEC Fellow, Michael Maes work covers the polar regions, temperate waters and the tropics.
