For T̶h̶e̶ ̶L̶a̶t̶e̶ Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The loss of RBG is something I can’t even put into words. She is someone I greatly admired, someone whose simple presence commanded inspiration. I already miss her. Immensely. I’m feeling low, feeling the pain of the world, reading through human history and seeing the same stories of hate, oppression and delusion again and again. I do my best to hold onto the beauty, to focus on the gift of being, but within the realm of privilege and awareness I can’t convince myself to just be joyous and grateful. I’m sad and angry. I’m crying and hurting. But I’m not meant to wallow. I’m meant to do what work I can before I die and so each day this is what I try and do: I show up, benefiting from a racist system, putting in effort to dismantle it, to abolish the broken conceits that continue to harm and murder people in the name of power and greed, and above all I aim to create work that inspires, that lifts us up so that we continue onward together in the fight. Sometimes I want to give up, to walk into the forest and never look back. But we can’t give up. We know our history to some extent, but if we understand anything about our awful and magical human path it’s this: anything is possible, so let us stand prepared and united. Another 7 minute poem challenge 😅 my prompt this time was balloon 🎈(this actually took more like 10mins since I wanted the poem to actually look like a balloon haha) Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern of behavior where people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud”. The chronic self-doubt is something I’ve (and I’m sure many of you) always suffered from. For me it was especially bad when I was a student finishing up my degree. Being surrounded by such brilliant classmates and seeing them go on to do amazing things made everything I did feel really small. I even feel this here on Instagram where there are just SO many talented writers whose works mine could never compare to. Often makes me feel like I don’t really deserve the followers I have and it makes me scared to post sometimes because I’m worried people will be disappointed in what I’ve written. Wish I could say I have it figured out now but I’m still working on it 😅 I’ve learned that comparison really is the thief of joy though, and I’m trying really hard to embrace my own unique style and be ok with the fact that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea 🍵 Does anyone actually read these captions btw?? This poem was inspired by the miraculous fact that I’m nearly four and a half years into a relationship and still very much in love. Rosaline This is a poem/song for Rosaline: the girl who broke Romeo’s heart (if you can call it that). I’m a bit obsessed with her. She is mentioned very briefly in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and yet, she is the catalyst for the rest of the play. If she hadn’t refused Romeo, he wouldn’t have fallen for Juliet etc, etc. I like to think of her as a far more shrewd Juliet...not willing to trade her life for the many Romeos of Verona.
