. Child labour, is just one form of child exploitation. Tender minds that should be nurtured, are forced into work due to conditions like poverty. Fragile bodies are made to work hard, meet inhumane goals. Then they’re mistreated, beaten and denied basic meals. They’re deprived of their childhood. . How can we help them? Does making donations help, or do the middlemen use the money for selfish reasons? I don’t know. Unfortunately right now, the most I can do is spread awareness in my own little ways, because even though child labour is prohibited by legislation, it is still under practise. . This is written in a very concise way for a reason. this poem is at large about trying to reconcile with being separated from “home” while constantly exposed to reminders of it. personally, i’ve been sitting on this feeling for awhile, and found myself constantly in a deep sense of nostalgia and grief— but for what, exactly? i asked myself this, and the clearest answer is “i miss my life.” the way it used to be, however messy, dramatic, painful. it was by no means perfect, but it was mine. i built my life in clinton, and it was entirely taken in a flash when the pandemic hit. my life in college, my friends, the town i grew to love (and at times, hate, which i learned is a form of love.) now i’m in a different country and don’t know when it’ll be safe to return. it’s a surreal feeling to see people reunited again in college, because that feeling seems so far from me now. i’m still trying to navigate this separation and reconcile with it, even when there are constant triggers. that’s where the last line comes from— it literally feels like i have been ejected from my old life, and am now watching it happen without me. this forced removal from the narrative is indescribable. there’s a constant emotional power struggle between hoping to reunite with the past, and knowing that even if i did, it wouldn’t be the same; an imitation of the past is not the same as having it back. this will likely be something i continue to explore through poetry in the coming months. - @heidiwongofficial on Instagram

I’ve had many conversations about the cowboy archetype and the reasons I’m drawn to it. For the most part, it’s personal. I grew up riding horses and rebelled against the english style. I wanted bear-back quarter horse rides or big comfortable saddles. I love the work a barn requires. I’m not afraid to ride a mustang who doesn’t fit the broken mold and when I lived in Joshua Tree I was blessed to care for two of these honorable beings. In the last year, it’s been a revival of boots and hats because that’s how I embody my dead best friend who was from rural Missouri and a masterful collector of country tunes. My alter ego loves the honky tonk no shits given attitude. But beyond the personal connection is the cultural. I’ve been so inspired to witness the way counter cultures pluck up aspects of the american dream aesthetic and turn them on their head. A friend just sent me an amazing article about Queer rodeo. I see various Black visionaries turning cowboy attire into high fashion. I love the play on power, the way we can take a patriarchal symbol and rewrite it with our own subversive commentary, turn it Queer, let it be Black and beautiful, use it to show our lack of fear and submission. I grew up with a southern step dad who has a deep deep twang, but it’s me who wears the snakeskin boots, it’s me who rides the stallion. Poem from The Edge of the Continent Volume Three - The Desert. If you really want to know me, read my books. I often think about how I’ve written a progressive map that explores and explains my nuance. All of my inner workings, right there for the sake of clarity and relation. No secrets. Just an elongated offering of self-evolution, ripe and available for anyone who wonders. This one, just a tiny example of disclosure, is from Volume Two. I’d swap desert with forest depending on the year.
